- divinediva, on 11/20/2008, -1/+16 Screening for these cancers is very vital.
- rwalters, on 11/20/2008, -4/+18preventing cancer probably causes cancer though...
- hnazareth16, on 11/20/2008, -1/+15It seems the only thing that isn't preventable in life is aging/death. But, I'm confident they'll develop a cure and/or preventative for that as well.
- fuzzymuzzy, on 11/20/2008, -3/+13Interesting cancer my be preventable but losing the game isnt
- dilbert, on 11/20/2008, -0/+9In other news: life causes death.
- slvrbullet87, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Do you think nobody got cancer before chicken nuggets? Processed food isnt good for you but it isnt cancer in a bag
- EmitStop, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7God dammit, that was a real dick move.
- asdflawejilf, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6doesnt matter because i read last week on digg that cancer has been cured
- sfhock, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6"Cancer risk was not associated with alcohol consumption, as reported in other studies."
thank you Jesus!! - dddavid, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5That was a lightweight article if I've ever seen one. Conclusions? Facts?
- jeevesatvic, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Research causes cancer in rats.
- killdashnine, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6Thank god drinking isn't a problem. Otherwise the economy would kill us all.
- Enasni1212, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5Of course, it seems like almost everything causes cancer... even the preventative measures for some cancers. Like being in sunlight is important for making enough vitamin D, which is important for preventing cancer... but being in sunlight causes skin cancer.
- roddack, on 11/20/2008, -2/+6maybe but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be a tool
- secrity, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Being in too much sunlight causes cancer. Everything, except for dark chocolate, should be in moderation.
- greensky, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3I'll second scooby's recommendation of The China Study http://www.thechinastudy.com/ . It's a really good book. They aren't selling anything. If you're worried about money, check it out at the library.
- zerhynn, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3It's all about the telomerase baby! There's anti-aging studies going on dealing with cancer and telomerase right now. Who knows, we could find a cure for cancer and aging in the same genre. High hopes, hnazareth!
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3I hear life is also preventable, it's called the pull-out method.
- gametavern, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2yeah, remember. Digg has taught us that water, oceans, wind, walking, running, living all cause cancer. So if you avoid all these things, you'll be cancer free.
- jimfeet, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2@dddavid
A lot fewer people lived long enough to GET cancer so I'm not sure your argument holds.
(FWIW, I still try to avoid processed foods.) - scooby007, on 11/20/2008, -3/+5The thing is, this all boils down to diet (though there is obviously the influence of genetics), but the profit system we refer to as 'health care' (in the U.S., our 'health care' system is the 3rd largest cause of death) is not really even able to foster or interested in fostering real wellness. Where's the profit in giving the power to the patient who therefore is consuming less? I just finished this book: http://www.thechinastudy.com/ and it is a real eye-opener to say the least!
- disco5896, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2But if I quit breathing, how am I supposed to smoke?
- Twoje, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/aubrey_de_grey_ ...
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2....Live on an isolated island in the Pacific to avoid carcinogens in the air, don't eat meat (supposedly), become nocturnal, and pray your family doesn't have a history of cancer.... Yep, easy.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2I love it when people assume that they know my financial and lifestyle situation better than I do. We can't all be outdoorsy farmers in the midwest, with relatively affordable quality meat and no cities for miles around. Call me spoiled, but I like being able to afford food, a roof over my head, and indoor plumbing -- and that, for a large chunk of the population in non-third-world countries, means a desk job in a city. I will repeat what I said before: there are no simple solutions to complex problems; and just because something works for you personally does not mean that you can extrapolate it for the entire population.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2People did contract and die of Cancer in 1908. Just google around a bit.

John S Pocter 67 yrs 15 May 1908 Uremia Cancer Dr Yates - pardonmedoug, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2100 years ago communicable diseases killed most people before they had a chance to develop cancer.
- Murdats, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2yay, then I can time travel and not age at the same time.
- LogicBomB, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2It's not that simple at all. I can imagine cancer has always been around, just not properly diagnosed.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1the onion, you did it again
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Who needs that crap? It has the word "cancer" in the headline, which means it'll make it to the front page regardless.
- runnernerd, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1.....but Chuck never cries.
- 1RiceLt5, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1You'd be surprised how many people think developing cancer is arbitrary, especially with the way the media portrays it.
This article is pretty devoid of facts though, which are kind of necessary when you're talking about scientific information. - zerhynn, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1That man looks very untrustworthy.
- prefan21, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1That's not what the study says.
It says that most risk factors (things that make cancer more likely) are preventable. We aren't going to wipe out 80% of cancers just because everyone takes up jogging. - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1FTA: "So far, we have not come to the stage where we are able to make specific recommendations regarding risk factors," Akushevich said in a statement.
So yeah, best of luck with that.
Causes of cancer are numerous and complex, and the research is often contradictory. Milk causes cancer!! No wait, it prevents cancer! Alcohol causes cancer! But red wine prevents certain types of cancer! Not even talking about the million-and-one environmental causes, starting with solar radiation (which causes skin cancer in large doses, but you need sunlight to produce vitamin D which is an ANTI-carcinogen) and ending with the crap in the air you breathe and the food you eat.
And don't forget, kids: oxygen is actually a pretty nasty toxin, which is supposed to contribute to aging (and probably cancer, too). The only solid recommendation I can give so far is that if you quit breathing and eating, you won't get cancer =P - Murdats, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2aging is totally preventable if you stop time travelling.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1What needed is the sure shot cure for cancer rather then saying that cancer could be prevented or it can be diagnosed.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -2/+3no *****, of course cancer is preventable. nobody got cancer 100 years ago. Eat real food, stop eating junk processed food, exercise, and BOOM, no cancer. so simple.
- pardonmedoug, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1The problem is that nobody knows which type of cancer they're going to get, and a lifestyle designed to prevent all of them would be like living in a bubble. I'd rather enjoy the life I have in as intelligent a way as possible.
- FlareHeart, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Everything causes cancer, so I just accept it and live my life in the way that makes most logical sense to me. I'm probably going to get it anyway, so it doesn't really matter. I can't prevent everything, so I just don't worry about it, and in turn have just that much less stress in my life.
- Charlotte_Web, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1My dad used to say that you should only shop the perimeter of the grocery store -- only the fresh stuff.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+1that was before proper hygiene infrastructure was put into place. people also didn't wash their hands 100 years ago. fool.
- HamstaMan, on 11/20/2008, -1/+1The food today is so full of all kinds of chemicals that might cause cancer. Even the livestock is fed chemicals that is suspected to cause cancer.
And even if most of these things don't cause cancer, the risk that a number of them do just adds up. - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1Diet? How about UV exposure and environmental toxins? Every time someone tells you that there is a simple solution to a complex problem, hang on to your wallet.
- Charlotte_Web, on 11/20/2008, -1/+1No, the absence of life is the cause of death.
- splosion, on 11/20/2008, -0/+0anyone else notice just to the right of the phrase FTA :
"Light physical activities decrease risk of cancer and moderate activities decrease the risks, but the picture for vigorous exercise is contradictory"
...was a link to another article titled:
"Vigorous exercise protects against breast cancer"
...? - Aleman360, on 11/20/2008, -1/+1Watch what you put in your mouth.
Don't smoke.
Exercise.
It's that easy. - HamstaMan, on 11/20/2008, -1/+0"I love it when people assume that they know my financial and lifestyle situation better than I do."
Noone claimed they did. Just answered with a less dramatic compromise. -
