- EmiliaGarcia, on 10/03/2008, -0/+26Musicians don't just have to use fingers and limbs separately, they have to use every part of their -body- separately. When playing in orchestra, we're required to all breathe at the same pace, to move our bodies together, to look up at the right times and ahead at others and lastly refer to the music. It's a gigantic process, and it's humbling to step out of yourself and forget about the individual and be more concerned about the "greater cause" of making the music happen as a symphony.
It's no wonder musicians think more creatively... - jjmac, on 10/03/2008, -3/+28In another study they found musicians can also use both sides of your girlfriend in the same manner.
- hnazareth16, on 10/03/2008, -0/+23This makes perfect sense. Musicians have to be able to do use their fingers and limbs independently of one another, which is no simple task.

- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -10/+24they can force their brains to do unnatural things in the pursuit of ass. hats off to all of you!
- badenglishihave, on 10/03/2008, -3/+15Show me a musician "in the pursuit of ass" and I'll show you a musician with no talent.
- spitfire547, on 10/03/2008, -1/+12Musicians have to be able to understand sheet music and calculate rhythms and be creative enough to make music people actually want to hear so yea it makes sense
- replaysMike, on 10/03/2008, -0/+9Personally I try to use less than half of my brain. My frontal cortex is HUGE.
- homesickalien, on 10/03/2008, -0/+8There is nothing as satisfying for my brain as playing the piano for an hour or two.
- chaos7, on 10/03/2008, -0/+8you're probably unhappy with your own job and want others to have a ***** job like yourself.
- EmiliaGarcia, on 10/04/2008, -0/+7Show me a musician "in the pursuit of ass" and I will be looking at a trumpet player.
- nemojonze, on 10/03/2008, -1/+8 I thought it said *Mexicans*
- flannerus, on 10/03/2008, -2/+9Yeah drummers literally use all four limbs independently while reading, keeping a steady tempo for the rest of the musicians, and anticipating upcoming sections before they're read. ***** gnar, but oh yeah, nowhere near as legitimate as assembling the buttons on a car dashboard for 15 years in Detroit, right? We all know music is just fun stuff, not serious.
- sbluetruck, on 10/03/2008, -1/+7i always knew i was good at fingering and tounging with my sax...i never thought it had any implications other than...*coughcough*...music
- KingGorilla, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6It's so hard to sing and play the piano/guitar simultaneously. How do they do it???
- MalarkeyPN, on 10/04/2008, -0/+5Most Diggers don't like this article because most diggers are nerds, are not musicians, and don't like being told that they don't belong to the group that is smart.
- ProfessorRiffs, on 10/03/2008, -1/+6How do you get a drummer to stop playing?
Put some sheet music in front of him!!!!! - flannerus, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5OH oh I know! Because someone submitted it to Digg!

- joshmoney, on 10/03/2008, -1/+5Hopefully this doesn't sound conceited but being a musician/artist I'm really glad someone finally took an extensive look at this. I always hated being classified as either right brained or left brained and every time I took one of those right/left test I always scored 50/50. It used to annoy the hell out of me when teachers at school tried to tell me that I was most likely either one or the other considering I was good at art and music and also maintained a 4.0 in almost every class. I always thought it made much more sense to "apply" either the right side of the brain or left depending on the task at hand. I think the proper terminology should be either Right Brained or Left Brained Deficient.
- poet, on 10/03/2008, -1/+5Seems more like you lack skill and have an excessive amount of jealousy.
- aaronjason8992, on 10/03/2008, -1/+5I know for a fact that this is true, I am currently an engineering student at he university of Auckland. I have always been a very creative student into web design, playing the guitar etc etc...However the education system greatly favors people who think with their left brain. People with their leftbrain are generally good at logic, math and sequence. Which is why a great number of right brained thinkers drop out of engineering, and math related courses, because they think its just not for them. However these righ brianed thinkers are what society need - They tend to solve some of the bigger problems in society because they tend to be global thinkers and look at the whole picture rather than look at small parts in a sequence.
- CaptainM4d, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4I'm reading This is your Brain on Music right now, and it's a great read about the neurology behind all of music, and I've learned that music, in fact, uses all parts of your brain for every different component. For anyone who enjoys understanding how the brain works with everyday things we as humans do, I highly recommend reading this book. http://www.yourbrainonmusic.com/
- jeweloree, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4I used to TA for my high school's Intro to Guitar class, and most kids could not grasp the art of reading musical notes, much less rhythms. Now try to automate that process to the point to where you can also control your fingers, your embouchure (mouth position for wind instruments), listen around you to make sure you are in tune with the ensemble, be able to look up at the conductor to sychronize yourself with the ensemble, and about a million other things you have to do while playing instrument. And then we could get into improvisation, but that's a whole nother level.
- lennybird, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4I imagine it's the same with drawing.
I'm reading, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." It discusses how the left hemisphere of the brain is geared more towards logic and pre-learned formulas, per-se. The right side seems to be where the majority of our creativity comes from.
This book is fairly old, though it stated scientific studies proved this, but I don't know anymore (anyone know?).
When working in harmony, you can do some pretty amazing stuff; and like the book states, you can actually feel it. I've experienced this while playing guitar, too. You sort of hypnotize yourself. - DamnMan, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Not to ***** all over your argument but I doubt that. I am by all standards a fairly "left brained" person. However despite this I am usually the first to play devils advocate and think about all the different angels and points of view in a given argument. Something that tends to get me in a lot of trouble actually. By your reckoning I should be stead fast in my views and empirical evidence. My guitar/piano playing, music composing, story writing, picture painting brother on the other hand openly admits to never thinking about anything that doesn't directly effect him. I also had a bit of a hard time in school because I wasn't a "normal" student that teachers hated. My brother was a model student teachers adored.
Does my anecdotal evidence trump your anecdotal evidence? - Subliminational, on 10/04/2008, -0/+3Music is one of the biggest joys in my life. If you're ok without it, then thats fine, but I hope it grabs you one day so you can see what everyone likes about it. Of course, I feel the same about tv, so maybe you're on to something?
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3In Australia?
- Brallit, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4What? Can I not both pursue ass and have talent? Or am I just simply not considered a musician?
- crazyhorse13, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Hmm. I find it doubtful that you have ever played an instrument for any length of time.
- 10lbhammer, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4"...keeping a steady tempo..." har har
just kidding. just doing my part to reinforce the stereotype that drummers keep time worse than bass players. - cidman2001, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3I was just going to say....Chicks Dig It!
Yes, I'm a musician and knew this a long time ago. - crazyhorse13, on 10/04/2008, -0/+3No one's saying that the left-brain/right-brain thing is cut and dry. But there's no arguing with the fact that people who would be classified as right-brained get pretty screwed in school and the job market. Us left-brainers get all the science stuff, math stuff, and computer stuff, whereas right-brained people tend toward athletics, craftsmanship, and the arts.
- Oxygen, on 10/03/2008, -9/+12They also destroy more of their braincells with drugs thrn others, so it all kind of evens out.
- funkedup, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3They don't. All their blood is flowing to another organ.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3reminds me of donnie darko with that teacher with the scale for Love and Fear and then Donnie gets pissed off on her and goes on a rant
- Superman7507, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2That is the best way i have herd anyone put it, I tip my Internets hat to you
- MalarkeyPN, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2jealous.
- crazyhorse13, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Then go and enjoy your political section. The rest of us found this interesting.
- acroyear2, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3I get a small high sometimes when I do or when I'm performing on my devices. drum machines, etc.
- Subliminational, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2Practice.
- ProfessorRiffs, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3I gave private guitar lessons for years and then I gave up. Do you know why? Because too many of them just couldn't get it. Their minds could not grasp it. They would come to every lesson, do everything I said, and still not get it. And I have several guitaring friends that have the same story to tell of their students. So unless you have first-hand experience, cram it.
Oh and what the ***** does DDR and sprinting have to do with connecting the ambidexterity common of musicians with the claim made by the headline? hmmmmm let's see oh yeah nothing. - avonalt, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2Creativity is important, but it is meaningless without a sound understanding of the principles that govern the world we live in. Math provides the framework through which we view the world. It enables meaningful creativity.
" However these righ brianed thinkers are what society need - They tend to solve some of the bigger problems in society because they tend to be global thinkers and look at the whole picture rather than look at small parts in a sequence."
Society needs "whole-brained" thinkers. It's easy enough to solve big problems, the difficulty is solving big problems in a meaningful and practical way. Doing that requires a "big picture" understanding of what needs to be done and the details needed to accomplish this.
Ex: How do you cure cancer?
Easy, stop cancerous cells from dividing. The hard part? Figuring out how to do that. - inactive, on 10/03/2008, -2/+4Well I'm a musician who frequently smokes pot, but only when playing music. It helps to "think outside of the box" and create funky tunes that I normally wouldn't be able to come up with.
It's proven that pot doesn't kill braincells. It just tells your braincells to stop thinking so hard, kick back, and just let it flow. - MalarkeyPN, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2That depends on how you're playing the guitar. I have no doubt that the greatest rock musicians (radiohead is the first that comes to mind) use their brains in a way similar to classical musicians. But the crappy bar band that plays loud monotonous crap, not so much.
As for me, I play and sing in a rock band. I write the songs and generally strum a sort of bass line on the bottom two strings while playing rhythmic chords overtop of that while also singing. Rock music is as challenging as the musician makes it. - ProfessorRiffs, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Dude I so have NO idea what you mean.
- philz, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Use both side: Earn hardly any money.
Use one side: Do business contracts (with musicians) to earn way more money than them.
Use neither side: Get into politics and get more money than the two above. - inactive, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3ok.
- EmiliaGarcia, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2Well right-brain is the creative and interpretive side, right? And the left-brain is analytical and logical?
So you use both when performing music; when my conductor says "MORE BLUE, LESS PINK", and you have to interpret wtf he means by that while still doing "visual" math (counting notes is how I learned fractions...), both sides have to be working. - LordVance, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2People really, really underestimate just how soothing playing something, anything, can be. I play guitar and keyboard; I'm not great at guitar, and I'm worse at keyboard, but both bring me great satisfaction. Guess what else? I sound way too nasally when I sing; I won't subject you to my music, but nothing makes an afternoon sweeter than sitting there with my Ovation 1778t playing some classic rock singing along.
