- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -4/+41Facebook generation?

Heh, one would hope people are learning something given how much time everyone spends on fb... - j0kr555, on 12/27/2008, -2/+17To assume that all of the information skills that our parents were taught are going to be relevant in ten years is naive. Viva la internet.
- hilanderiam, on 12/27/2008, -1/+13I learned all my social skills on DIGG...
*starts digging a hole to bury myself in* - bigboss0101, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8If not for facebook I would have had 0 friends.. and my life would be worthless.
- bigboss0101, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8hahaha.. facebook is only media hype.
- gfxlonghorn, on 12/27/2008, -2/+9Are you serious? "youth respect one another's authority online"? Really?
If artistic endeavors include porn, then I am learning quite a bit.
Somebody needs to take their funding away. I guess I wouldn't expect any more from FSU anyways. - ryan83189, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6Facebook is dumb. It might be useful for discovering shared friends and interests, but that feature is useless since people friend everyone that asks and join every group they have a slight interest in at the time of invitation.
- sipsyrup, on 12/27/2008, -1/+7I have pretty sweet bow staff skills thanks to facebook.
- thizzlebot, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6I think i got some poo in my mouth from that ***** sandwich
- Sp0rAdiC, on 12/27/2008, -1/+7I feel sorry for the people that don't realize this, and fail to utilize it.
- agentzero141970, on 12/27/2008, -0/+5I say digg is creating a SMARTER generation.
- TheFuzzyOne, on 12/27/2008, -0/+5Bo staff.

- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4Duh, it's not like myspace or anything like that.
- 12916studios, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4Facebook IS a waste. Yes, teens may learn how to type from it, but not properly in coherent sentences. Instead they just use texting language. Sites that aren't a waste: forums. I learned how to type well and quickly because of forums. On a forum it's impolite to not type sentences that are grammatically correct with adequate punctuation. And occasionally you will get a thread in which people are posting at a rate of one page every minute. As such, one is forced to type well, and be quick while doing it. One must be, if they want to keep up.
After a few weeks of that, I am now a better typist than most people I have met. As a result, I have been helped tremendously in school in the speed at which I can get stuff done. Facebook, one the other hand, doesn't have that immediacy sometimes held on forums. And in all honesty, it hinders one's ability to create relationships because teens use it at the expense of in-person contact. It might make life easier in the moment, but it does not make life better. It's a massive step backwards in social interaction.
So wait, you're right...maybe Facebook does teach something. It teaches teens how to be even lazier than they already are. - lulzitsadigg, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4i accidentally the word
- fxu1989, on 12/27/2008, -1/+5I don't have a facebook account, nor twitter, nor myspace, nor whatever-other-***** is "in" right now.
Why am I always getting associated with these random stupid "social-network"-generation that suck. - RobotBuddha, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Social learning? Sounds a lot like people who say they have "street smarts". Which is a euphemism for being an idiot.
- computershack, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3***** ***** article.
A recent event brought it home.
The 17 year old daughter of a friend was staying at ours for a while. She was constantly texting and IM'ing a guy who was fairly local and apparently had been some time.
One night they met up to go on a date. After an hour, she returned. A few minutes later, she's texting and IMing with this guy again. When asked why she'd come back so early, apparently they didn't know how to talk to each other IRL. So after sitting there in silence for an hour, they both decided to go home.
How ***** sad is that?
Online chat/IM/forums and SMS promoting social skills? My ***** arse they are. - masterwit, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3They are trying to place a single comparison to "explain" a generation: this is shallow minded because we are a very diverse culture today. (which is a Good thing) props for pointing that out
- bkrall4, on 12/27/2008, -2/+5Facebook is great. But we Iearn skills by actually learning new things.
- kahn2001, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Don't forget about Lolcats.
- Barackalypse, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Its true, learning to communicate over long distances with people that are neurotic, excitable, and mentally deficient has been useful practice for me when doing email support with clients.
- luciofulci, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4we need an article to education you.
- lazyfisherman, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Seriously, Facebook is not the beginning and end of all things...
- bixby1, on 12/27/2008, -3/+5If by "Geeking Out" you mean "hooking up with super-hot chicks" then I shall purchase your book.
- Anonymerican, on 12/27/2008, -2/+4So every time I get hit by a snowball in "Snowball Wars" I'm learning something?
Social networking is a useful and powerful tool, but when you start to give it that much merit, I think you're only driving us further in to the pit of denial which dilutes the face that we are merely animals. Animals need resources, physical, tangible resources. Advertising yourself may have certain advantages, and connecting with your friends is an awesome plus... But what happens when the power goes out, for say three days?! No wall posts, no tagging, no giving a cosmopolitan to that girl you don't ever talk to in real life. I think a skill is more like being able to irrigate a vegetable garden to sustain yourself, and I don't know very many people in my generation who can hack it. But if tagging your friends in photos drunk and untagging yourself in pictures you think you look ugly in is a skill...Consider me Miles Davis. I think our generation should spend less time justifying our behaviors in these now tools, and start proving that this sort of understanding really does make us more powerful. Oh, and I use facebook, it's really helpful in sharing with my family and friends my adventures in South America... but I've found applying myself and working to get here, and then getting out and meeting new people are definitely more worthwhile skills. - vplakhi, on 12/27/2008, -2/+4yeah, sure, but i mean diminishing returns, right? how much more will you learn by spending your 5th hour of the week on facebook, as opposed to using it to read a book, go somewhere new, or take the longer route home?
- asiarock, on 12/27/2008, -2/+4Facebook providing social skills.... what a joke!!!
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3The only downside to this phenomenon is the decline of clubs and organizations. There's still something to be said for face to face interaction. Although I do believe the internet provides a good deal of socialization
- bkrall4, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Not sure if that was a "burn" or you would really like me to explain further? I just mean Facebook has redeeming qualities but people aren't really learning new skills from Facebook. They're just using it for what it is (a social networking tool)... no use pretending it's really productive. You learn skills by actively learning something new, like taking guitar lessons or practicing a foreign language, etc. Make sense?
- luciofulci, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Did you read the article? As technology advances, it alters our social life. With cell phones, facebook and all that jazz were are literally constantly in touch with other people. Instead of going to someone, or calling them and telling them something, we get the oh so impersonal text message. To deny its effect on people is just being naive, besides you cant overlook the effects on perception of reality either.
- NJank, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2"They are not going to change the world" hey, I've saved 12 sq ft of rainforest so far with my L'il Green Patch...
- ramtanion, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2first laugh i had all day
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Have you actually seen the 12 sq feet of rainforest?
- FishHammer, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3Study shows playing video games teaches valuable skills, such as proper weapon usage, Murlock slaying, zombie survival, and driving skills. I made the study so it's valid.
- Gr1nch, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1That boy's a wiener. That girl is a loser. 17 years old and can't hold a conversation?
The guy was probably ugly and she didnt want to talk to him, so she came home. - rabidvibes, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1stats can be spun either way though??? I mean if they took the time texting to read books that could further them in the future which one would be more beneficial?
- thetanbark, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1The Comments section of most stories would tell a different story.
- wirah, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1Facebook is garbage
Dont insult us by labelling us the 'Facebook Generation' - thetanbark, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1Efficient != Lazy
Now if my boss would just realize that.
/Programmer - OneLess, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1Political parties and the Internet in general are both for "***** social networking." I don't know where Facebook does/will fall on the spectrum of world changers, but it probably shouldn't be marginalized just because it's a social networking site.
- PatGrahamBlock, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1Parents worry way too much about everything these days! I believe we should allow kids to make decisions early and often. Otherwise, when they become 18 and they are expected to make decisions, they won't have any experience at it!
Give them a break! If they are treated like they have some sense, they might just live up to that expectation! - FI5HERMAN, on 12/27/2008, -2/+3Well we are in the information age my friends !!!
- oda1, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1If you admit it makes life easier, what's your problem?
- dustinbolton, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1If they learn social skills using facebook, imagine what skills they would learn socializing in person...
