- DickyT83, on 03/30/2009, -2/+12Thousands of girls are predisposed to develop anorexia because of the way society treats fat people, says a not-that-smart guy.
- blah247, on 03/30/2009, -2/+11That's bulimia.
- Hrodrik, on 03/30/2009, -2/+11That doesn't make the cultural influence any less responsible.
- ih8apple, on 03/30/2009, -1/+9Just my two cents....I know that anorexia and bulemia effect mostly women, but men can develop it also. I am talking from experience. It is frustrating that a whole group of effected people are essentialy ignored from this life threatening illness. It is like saying breast cancer strikes women only. Thats not true, it effects men also, just in less numbers. Does that mean they should be ignored? Of course not.
- lelebelle, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6I like that clicking the link to read the article opens a page with a weight loss ad featuring a VERY thin young girl. gg
- tracyljs, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6I like joking as much as the next person......but I think it's extremely innapropriate on a thread such as this. We should applause science for looking further into a disease that KILLS people. It's human nature to have a poor self-image, but obviously there is a lot more going on when a person sacrifices their life for it.
- silverchrysalis, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5i've read that it is growing amongst men, which is no surprise (taking this 'media influence' theory into play) considering the weird, skinny and androgynous looking men that are cropping up as models more and more.
- norman619, on 03/30/2009, -1/+6Yes. Girls who are bombarded by the images of size zero girls depicted in magazines and the media in general, and do not themselves fit that image, are predisposed to developing Anorexia.
- dustinbolton, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4It is absolutely not human nature to have a poor self-image.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3yeah, ***** sick people. mooches.
- Rain12913, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3Hope you forgot the /s.
If not, behaviors performed by someone suffering from a mental disorder (like Anorexia Nervosa) do not fit the notion of "choice" that you're referring to. People with Anorexia no more "choose" to starve themselves than people with OCD "choose" to wash their hands for three hours a day. - Rain12913, on 03/31/2009, -0/+3Actually, it's a common misconception that Bulimia includes purging (self-induced vomiting) whereas Anorexia does not. Both diagnoses can be given to people who purge, the most significant difference between the two disorders is that people with Anorexia are at least 15% underweight, whereas people with Bulimia are not (as soon as they lose enough weight to qualify, however, their diagnosis will be changed from Bulimia to Anorexia). There are Anorexics who purge, and Bulimics who do not, for example.
- Hrodrik, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3Exactly. I fear for this. Society must understand the importance of genetic diversity.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+31. Stop eating crap.
2. Exercise.
3. Don't expect spot-reduction. Expect an overall decrease in body fat. - lisa3711, on 03/30/2009, -2/+5Very true. But, this is what women have been putting up with for years and years from the medical establishment. Heart treatments were tested in men only for years.
- mjoe, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2affect.
- rangertough, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Some kids are more vulnerable to having bad parents?
- anteup, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3And tells women they're only as good as their dress size, *****, ass, whathaveyou.
- Muspar, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1How the crap did you go from a study suggesting a genetic and neurological basis for Anorexia Nervosa to making unsupported statements about women getting less intelligent and criticizing their sexual/reproductive choices?
- TheInfinityZero, on 03/30/2009, -2/+4Each day we find ourselves a bit closer to Gattaca...
- jikmo, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3But there must be other factors involving science! (FTA)
I think I'm going to use that from now on. - thePTS, on 03/30/2009, -2/+4Because this version is so easy to believe (that women see slim girls in ads & movies, and feel bad about themselves) , and because it has this politically correct "drive" behind it, this victim-myth has actually driven a lot of the serious work on anorexia and bulimia.
This feminist / political correct version of anorexia, again leaves the woman as the passive, abused party. In fact, all case studies I've read about anorexia, seem to be about a strong-willed woman who is more or less obsessed with her "project".
If you go to anorexia forums online too, you will see mostly proud and (WAY too) determined women there.
But I guess men are the only ones with strong enough intent to be driven by malign ambition. And women are just victims of society... again. - waleedo, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3yeah...if they watch MTV
- anteup, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Most modern medicine is based on results they got from men.
- ocharry, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2People need to learn the difference between 'effect' and 'affect'.
- matt.rubin, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2lets pretend we didn't see this.
Doctors would start fattening up kids because "they have the wrong gene" or some *****. Not like America is already in trouble. - Hrodrik, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2No one is talking about feminism. The problem here is the genetic profiling. People must not pay so much attention to genetic predispositions.
genotype + environment + random-variation → phenotype - akatsuki, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3I love all the comments talking about media programming as the cause when there might be a suggestion that it is not popular bias. Maybe, just maybe, it has nothing to do with cultural expectations... but a hint of that and everyone goes back to their talking points.
- Bodhinature, on 03/31/2009, -1/+3I can predict it too. If you neglect your daughter or tell her she's worthless every day of her life, I'm willing to be the anorexia correlation would be quite high.
- silverchrysalis, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/affect-versus ...
- Tddupre, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3Just give them some weed
- Muspar, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2@Rain12913: You seem to have actual knowledge of the topic you're talking about, why are you on Digg? Your "facts" and "knowledge" have no place here, now start screaming ignorantly and insulting everyone else like the rest of us.

Seriously though, I'm glad you pointed that out. I have to correct people on this a lot, too. One thing that people also don't realize is that the "purge" part of Bulimia isn't restricted to vomiting. It can include taking laxatives or medications to dehydrate them, or even fasting for a while after the binging. "Not eating after eating a lot" doesn't really fit most people's image of an eating disorder. - thePTS, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3You talked about culture being "responsible". When you do that around the topic of anorexia, it's wise to state exactly what you mean.
If you meant that genetic explanations are generally overhyped and sensationalized, I couldn't agree more. - Muspar, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Buried for being totally ignorant of everything the past 100 years of mental health research has brought us about mental disorders and "choice".
- chix0r, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3///not fark
- realpolitik, on 03/30/2009, -1/+2This isn't helping to cure anyone. It's wildly speculative pseudo-scientific excrement.
- jcsoc, on 03/30/2009, -1/+2What you mean there is a way other than them being fat?
- lnxfi, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1I think I know him... I used to work with him at Pizza Hut. He was a driver named Craig. Either that, or it's his twin.
- OpalZimbo, on 03/30/2009, -1/+2The decent to Gattaca begins.
- staley517, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1i love my food way to much for that *****
- gkiltz, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1Just because it could be, does not mean that it will be!
In 1973 Homosexuality "Could Be" predicted. The predictions proved wildly off. It WAS predicted, many times, but never accurately!
So much for predicting what goes on in the human mind! - PizzaEagle, on 03/30/2009, -1/+1yeah but they dont eat meat afterwards
- metalgearsolid2, on 06/04/2009, -0/+0genetic versus environmental cause. There will always be a debate of whether it is caused by our biology or by external factors. More important than the reason why, is the question of how do we help those who are afflicted by this problem get through it?
Find more information by browsing http://tr.im/nnC5 - MelissaOfTroy, on 03/30/2009, -4/+3Well my mom was anorexic, and I was too. Would that be her conditioning or a genetic predisposition?
/I wish I were that skinny again.
//not that I'm fat, I just miss my hipbones. - Gguillorn, on 03/30/2009, -2/+1Anorexia is a disease the way alcoholism is a disease. You can be genetically predisposed to have both. but the blame is ultimately yours. Society does this, society does that, but when it comes down to it, personal responsibility shouldn't be ignored.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -5/+4Fat chance.
