- Anonchrist, on 08/06/2008, -4/+12I for one welcome our alarmist media Overlords.
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -3/+10You can tell who the tourists are in Manhattan because they're fat and slow, and waddle three-people-wide, effectively blocking the sidewalks.
Dugg, because I can't stand fat Americans. - jebaird, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4It doesn't surprise me at all
- UoMDeacon, on 08/06/2008, -1/+5Actually a large amount of tourists in NYC this summer seems to be European, thanks to our weak dollar...which means they are thinner and probably don't block the sidewalks as much through sheer size.
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3lets hope our society does not evolve into a state where being a ***** is acceptable.
- patimen, on 08/07/2008, -1/+4I also heard that in 50 years, we'll have more fat people than we actually have PEOPLE! If current trends continue, at least.
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2Yeah, well, they're just as bad with their pretentious demeanor, bad breath and horrible tipping. Thank God they're at least buying up the condos, or else our local economy would be really screwed.
- Kelgari, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2has a fat-ass portion of the bury brigade invaded this submission? go find a treadmill you pudgy bastards.
- zacharytelschow, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2Have you looked around lately? Or, if you're an average American adult, in the mirror?
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2You can move around the skinny ones. The fat ones have you trapped.
- WhoDoneIt, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2I know quite a few vegans and veggies that are overweight. There are tons of carbs in things like beans and pastas, tons of oils in vegetables, such as olive oil, and don't forget the nuts and legumes.
No matter what you eat it's all about portion control + exercise. Even these people that don't eat meat have plenty of stuff that will make them porky. Don't let that surprise you. - ryan83189, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2I, being a fat person, have more credibility than this article and insist that this fattening trend, like all trends, has diminishing returns.
- Requeim, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1what data is that??? above 40!!!
http://www.healthpoints.info - spammishking, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2When I read the headline I thought it was from the onion, I guess real news is becoming as sensationalist as fake news
- Haoie, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Fat people are everywhere, in every country.
Get over it. - kokoshka, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Not if I'm alive in 40 years.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1You sound bitter, fat man.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1This is stupid.
- nicko68, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Cool, I'm so tired of walking.
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I finally won't be so alone.
- kokoshka, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Fat mexicans?
- buddyw, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2“It really needs to be more than an individual effort,” Liang said. “It needs to be a societal effort.”
It's statements like this that scare the hell out of me. What are you going to do? Force people to stop eating?
I only see one possibility. Allow health insurers to discriminate/charge more based on body fat percentage, or any other measurable/changeable health risk. In other words, the government should do less. If being fat is a health liability health insurers are assuming that health liability. If it costs more or if individuals are denied coverage, the onus would be on them to change. - buddyw, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2I agree with you to some degree. Fat people in Manhattan are obviously tourists, but skinny tourists are slow too. You can be skinny and slow paced/out of shape. I think your problem is people in general that are not accustomed to walking everywhere. The fat ones are just easier to see.
- dreid1987, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1"If the trends of the past three decades continue"
They might as well say "This is not true, but..." - BRod1, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1As a guy who packed on over 100 pounds during a few years in my late-twenties and has lost all of it through diet and exercise, I think one solution is simple:
Bring back the stigma for being overweight! We should not simply "accept" people being fat. I know that sounds mean-spirited, but unless someone has a medical condition which prevents them from losing weight through normal means, there is NO excuse for anyone to be fat...none whatsoever. Let's start holding people accountable for their personal choices again instead of looking for external reasons for people being overweight.
(And yes, as a guy who spent a few years being obese, I'm like an ex-smoker who rails against smokers, I'll admit that much at least. And I fully expect to be dug down by some of the more chunky participants on this board who are comfortable resembling a distant cousin of Jabba the Hutt...) - dvord, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Fat and depressed. All we need now is a fat pill to go with our anti-depressant!
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1the article itself said that 100 percent is improbable, didn't you read? plus, is it ok with you if only 80 percent were obese?
- nwoantibody, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Fatass, get off your couch and walk to the White House.
Your country needs you there. - KidKenosha, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Cure for obesity: not becoming a fatass in the first place.
- zohaibusman, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1USA. The Country of Fat people
- scain, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Speaking from experience, the milk won't spoil by the end of a 5 mile walk on an excessively hot day.
- rz8472, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I guess why that's why France is so... fat!?
It's a lifestyle problem. In fact, it would be especially detrimental to have a large portion of the population be obese in a UHC system, since the government - and by extension all the other taxpayers - would have to foot the bill of those obese persons' additional complications. And for a system that lives or dies depending on public and political support, that's not good news. - Ajajadude, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1You don't have to walk everywhere to not be fat. Eating right (as in cutting out the junk food and fast food), not sitting on your ass all day and being fairly active is enough to keep most people skinny.
Yes, fat people do exist in every country. But, there are more fat people in America than those other countries. Every time I've been to Universal Studio in Hollywood, nothing but morbidly obese families. The father, the mother and the kids are all walking heart attacks. When I was a kid, there were a few fat kids in my schools, K-12, and you noticed the fat kids. These days, you don't notice when kids are fat; you notice when kids are skinny. - Ajajadude, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1This isn't a universal health care problem. This is a people are ***** lazy problem.
- FoxOrian, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0It's strange though, because all of the comments at +0/-0...? No one dugg them down.
It's like this in a lot of new articles. - possum21, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0You would think at some point that all health care costs for poor lifestyle choices such as obesity, smoking etc would need to be passed on to the individual. That's probably the only time people will be forced to make better choices.
- ChromaVita, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0...said djoobacca as he sat in the same room as trumpcard and monitored exactly what he ate.
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Could be a good explanation as to why are culture is *****.
- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Ha, I was in London recently. The women were all fat and looked like men. Get outside now and then.
- Rudegar, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0you can do it! ;)
- shamanking911, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Could be? COULD be? people can figure that out on their own. We don't need a study to tell us that.
- rz8472, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Those gas powered mowers you can sit on.
- meells, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0They really need to adjust the levels on what is overweight, I think. After all, the reason diabetes keeps growing has less to do with the populations health then the fact that they keep lowering the threshold for what qualifies as diabetic. Pharma loves it. Anyway, if I was my 'proper' measurements (6'0, 170ish IIRC) I would be a stick figure. I got out of the service at 225 and was not even like some crazy buff dude, just a regular looking in shape guy..yet by the chart I would have been obese. These numbers with no context are useless and only serve the interests of those who want to profit of off the 'problem'.

- inactive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0When we're all overweight it won't be called overweight, it will just be called normal weight
- stringerbell, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0That study shows a complete and utter lack of understanding about the effects of peak oil! 40 years from now, the people left alive will all be rather thin...
- siandt, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Yeah, and I plan on being one of them. Genetics and veggies FTW.
