- deweyhewson, on 12/12/2008, -0/+20It is infuriating that, whenever there is a "budget crisis", which seems to be every year, state governments always try to make the cuts on education and medication first.
Bastards. - hnazareth16, on 12/11/2008, -1/+15Better not get hurt or injured in the foreseeable future.
- coolpepper43, on 12/12/2008, -0/+12Medicaid is not just for poor people who are too "lazy" to pay for their heath insurance. Medicaid includes people who are disabled and mentally ill who can not afford health care because they are not able to provide an income because of their disability. I believe this is very important to people with disabilities who need their medications and medical care to function.
- eastwood24, on 12/11/2008, -2/+10Local and state govt's are required to balance their budgets each fiscal year (unlike our debt-ridden fed gov't). There is always a lag effect between econ. downturns and gov't budget shortfalls. FY 2009 will be a real awakening. Most local gov'ts receive their funds from property taxes, that are mostly assessed as a % of property value (note national housing prices). State govt's typically funtion on income and sales taxes (note job losses and credit crunch = lower consumer spending). Some states will be in much better position than others. However, the best financial advice I can offer for the next few years, is to invest in your friends and family.
In the end, you will witness a paradigm shift in the world economy from primarily unregulated production of consumer goods to more regulated sustainable infastructure development ie green jobs. But do not expect this transition to be painless, just remember that as world trade contracts in the next few years, those most affected by this transition will be the world's poor without the means to produce of purchase basic needs in life. So feel lucky and help your brothers and sisters...it's good kharma. - BJF9999, on 12/12/2008, -0/+8Screw that! Everyone buy more ***** at Wal-mart on your credit card! Prop this monster up!
- Richandler, on 12/12/2008, -1/+8This is why the state is supposed to protect the opportunity to buy insurance, not provide it. Now that the state is failing they are failing to do the first job of simply protecting the opportunity.
- pintomp3, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6yeah, get rid of roads and police too!
- firebirdx01, on 12/12/2008, -0/+5medicare is screwed- but no one will really care until it reaches critical mass and it hasn't yet.
- ChonoonFiend, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4Its pretty bull *****. FEMA denied a lot of funding to Texas after Ike because we had a surplus of $2 million. No where near enough to cover repairs.
- Jeepinator, on 12/12/2008, -8/+12The government is not here to provide this kind of stuff for citizens. Take it all away. The government is supposed to have minimal influence on it's people and their lives.
- emazur, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Cutting unemployment benefits may be next:

- richi1173, on 12/12/2008, -1/+4Well, this is not true for all states. Florida today just announced a plan to increase healthcare coverage for 3.8 million uninsured. I should know, I'm going to be applying when the services becomes active on January 5.
- jcaino, on 12/12/2008, -3/+6I think we're the only species hellbent on elongating life, particularly for the unhealthy and diseased. While I understand compassion and whatnot, it just doesn't seem to jive with the ongoing survival of the species...leading to overpopulation and the weakening of the herd.
- reeds1999, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Hmmm.....I wonder how many of these states cut their politician's salary and benefit packages??
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Uh huh, and god hates fags. Why are you on Digg? Your church, the westborough baptist church, knows only homosexuals use digg. Better not get caught!
- regeya, on 12/12/2008, -2/+4In other words, do away with healthcare because it's socialism; you're free to die now.
Yep! - RaysinX, on 12/12/2008, -2/+4i know this is the internet and all... but that is really insensitive and cynical
- reedatschool, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Neither do the Nazi, sieg heil United States!
- Gareth321, on 12/12/2008, -1/+3I've recorded your username. I'm going to send you a shout next time you get sick. I'll probably rub it in and tell you you should die for the good of the herd.
- idc5, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2here's some ideas for the government:
-legalize weed to free up our prison systems and collect tax money on sales
-stop borrowing money from foreign countries to pay for a unnecessary war
won't happen because things that make sense seem to never happen - regeya, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Blagojevich was all set to increase coverage here in Illinois, too. Oh, and the state can't cover the State Police's gas expenses.
- GovernmentsGun, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Because the government loves you. Remember that.
- mfc5200, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Where I live, government revenues almost tripled in the past 8 years as a result of property price increase. Funny thing though, services didn't triple in quality. They just hired more bureaucratic paid jobs where the people get paid $50,000 to sit at a disk, stamp crap, and build up their pensions. Pathetic.
- webhosting1, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1aye nice indeedy
http://www.reacthosting.com - Jeepinator, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1If they want.
- regeya, on 12/12/2008, -1/+2But this is the United States, and you're spouting Libertarian rhetoric. Get with the program here. The FEDERAL government is evil for having medicare. States, though, should have the right to hand out ham sandwiches if they want.
- Barackalypse, on 12/12/2008, -1/+2Pretty much the entire history of Government entitlements is diametrically opposed to the Darwinian concept of the survival of the fittest. People who need the help of the Government have failed. Its funny to watch the double standard of the progressives here, railing against the bailout of GM, yet at the same time quite happy to have the Government bail out individuals guilty of the same incompetence. I say let them all fend for themselves, adapt or die.
- Jeepinator, on 12/12/2008, -1/+2Police are mostly on the state level. State level roads are also possible, though the interstate was a very nice addition.
- donna1234, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1Several U.S. states are cutting their health insurance coverage for residents

- cslewisster, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1Wow you thought I was serious? Sarcasm is so had to convey online (hint that's why I said call Sean Hannity as a sarcastic remark)
- Jeepinator, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1fail...federal federal i mean.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1Yep.
No more roads, street lighting, stop signs, all signs, Schools, waste services.
Councils should start levying Power and Telco's for Air space and Ground space, same too with Water supplies, Waste water and so on. Forget traffic lights, forget Bus lanes, forget Bike paths. No more urban planning, live where you want. No more Trees or flowerbeds. No more graffiti removal and building controls. Yep Government should keep out of these things...
/s - Christianptriot, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1That is because they try to solve these problems by throwing exorbitant amounts of money at these problem areas in hopes of finding a solution....which never works.
- AdamWest2122, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1We are also the only species with art, science, space programs, and world of warcraft. Well-bodied and strong only works for manual labor, it is common for intelligent people to be otherwise sick or physically disabled. Your proposal would throw the baby out with the bathwater oh wait, that would be a good thing eh? Reduce population and all.
- elliotys, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Wow, buried for lack of logic.
- Jeepinator, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1maybe i should have clarified that my comment had to do mainly with the state governments.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1Wait!! Just get the video camera!
- elliotys, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Maybe if Bush wasn't giving 10 billion a month to Iraq we wouldn't have to cut healthcare and education every time there is a budget crunch. God-*****-Damnit I hate that man!
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1Cops in America (aside from New York and CA) on foot? yeah right. Hope the Donut shop is close...
- Lewie, on 12/12/2008, -0/+1People entered into society because they were tired of the hardships living in the state of nature. Societies are much better equipped to progress than individuals fending for themselves. If you want government out of your life, feel free to venture deep into the woods and never return.
Darwinism talks about the survival and adaption of the species, not the competition between individuals within a species. The more varied a species is, the better it is able to adapt. Humans are fortunate enough to have a wide variety of talents. We don't survive and advance simply based on our athletic fitness, but with our intelligence. Would it be beneficial for our species to let people like Stephen Hawking die just because they are not physically strong?
Also, I don't see how healthcare and getting sick is the same as a corporate bailout. One is incompetence, the other is an accident or natural illness. Our health care system, but mostly the insurance system, is flawed. It is a profit-seeking venture; which automatically puts profit ahead of other concerns (such as health care). Even with insurance, one may not receive health care for a number of reasons, few of which have to do with providing care. Saying "adapt or die" to a flawed system is stupid. Fix the system.
Barackalypse, you feel that you are better than the rest of society? That maybe you "made it" on your own? That you are safe from whatever might happen? Well, unless you've been living in a log cabin all of your life, at least part of your success is due to society/government. Laws and regulations kept you relatively safe to enjoy adulthood. The health and success of the rest of society provides you with educators, employers and customers.
If you think you can do so well on your own, go to Somalia and live under your "adapt or die" philosophy. - shortanswer, on 02/01/2009, -0/+0My state has cut unemployment insurance benefits to along with other benefits provided to state employees. Losing job was bad enough now I don't get enough money from unemployment insurance to cover expenses. I filed for unemployment (this site was helpful I should mention - http://fileunemployment.org ) Other issue I have is my heater is not working in the cold weather. My home warranty company was supposed to fix it, but they are good for nothing. They are saying home warranties do not cover maintenance negligence issues. Come on! this is not negligence, it is a mechanical issue. I checked out home warranty listings at http://www.homewarrantyreviews.com/ and apparently most warranty companies are fraudulent.
This is really bad bad recession folks! -
