Sorry Big Mama: McDonald's fries lose the transfats
money.cnn.com — The world's largest fast-food chain is getting rid of artery-clogging transfats on its menu; plans to have healthier oil in use at all U.S. restaurants by year-end.

- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -27/+5aye though for cheap food it's passable. The mcgriddles are good as are the new cinnamon melts other wise I only eat it if I'm near broke for a day or so.
- bradallen18, on 10/11/2007, -13/+64That is some tasty ass then.
- ProfChaosOmega, on 10/11/2007, -9/+28well i must like ass then.
wait.. - keyboardduder, on 10/11/2007, -11/+62lol, when will people learn?
Its like taking a teaspoon out of a bowl of ***** and saying, "Its Better Now" - DrDragun, on 10/11/2007, -11/+8lol who is Big Mama?
- meldroc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35This might be in the cards. The reason why fast food joints use trans-fats is because they're cheap, and they keep for a long time (because even microbes won't eat that *****.) They don't make the food tasty - in fact their taste is somewhat nasty.
By switching to non-trans-fat oils, the price will go up a bit because it's a bit more expensive, and the oil won't keep as long before going rancid, but it will taste better. And not clog up your arteries so fast - there's a reason why doctors want to flat-out ban trans-fat. It's slow poison that your liver doesn't know how to metabolize, thus it builds up in your bloodstream. - baddriver, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29I'll believe it when I see it. McDonalds pulled this ***** back in 2003 claiming they were reducing the trans fat content of their oil. They advertised it like crazy how they were switching to a healthier oil. Then guess what, they forgot to actually change their oil. They got sued. They lost.
http://bantransfats.com/mcdonalds.html - Cerialthriller, on 10/11/2007, -8/+7i stopped eatting this ***** years ago. Burger King has better burgers anyway
- mateo60, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Thank God, now McDonalds food is 100% healthy!
- fadetoone, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4@DrDragun
If I'm not mistaken, Big Mama is undoubtedly a reference to Stan Lee's reality show "Who Wants to be a Superhero." Big Mama was a superhero contestant who ate fries and donuts to bulk up and bring down some serious pain.
Sounds stupid, but she got 2nd or 3rd place somehow. - fadetoone, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0or, possibly... the big mama from big mama's house... but that's way too obvious and lame...
- Nerfdude, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2buried for martin lawrence reference.
- fadetoone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Gah... I just looked up and found out it was "Fat Momma" in "Who Wants to be a Superhero" so dig me down...
- kelbear, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I prefer my Wendy's salads. Their healthy food menu is actually palatable, and much more diverse tan their competitors. BK and MCdonalds salads are just lettuce with a tomato cut in half, and shaved carrots. Yuck.
- SickMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Where are all of the Digg Libertarians decrying the fact that McDonald's is taking away their God given right to eat heart clogging food? They went nuts when NYC tried to ban trans-fats.
- PdxPhoenix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@sickmonkey (#6869441)
Perhaps the difference is NYC _ordered_ all restaurants to do it vs. McDys _volunteering_ to do it themselves? - CedEx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1@ kp3469
How exactly did you compare the taste of "ass" and "McDs" to come to that conclusion? - XZanatos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The funny thing about this whole trans-fat situation is that they were originally promoted as the solution to getting away from "saturated-fats", the "trans-fats" of the late 80 and early 90s. Ten years later everyone started figuring out they were worse than the cure. So once we get rid of all these trans-fats I bet ya saturated-fats are going to come back as the new 'bad guy' to healthy living. Why can't we all just eat like the Japanese and Chinese??
- Pozer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17"at all U.S. restaurants by year-end" what about the other restaurants in the rest of the world?
- mazerrackham, on 10/11/2007, -8/+5Don't they still use styrofoam burger boxes in other countries? They stopped using them in the states years ago.
- bmartin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30Apparently those countries don't have the same problem this one does. The US has a fast-paced lifestyle. People wake up and drive to McDonald's for breakfast before work, grab a sausage biscuit combo and 100-oz. coffee, go home, then take their entire family to McDonald's so that they have time to read to their kids at night. A lot of people don't cook because both parents are working full-time.
Daily exercise is non-existent for most of the population. Junk food is much cheaper than produce. It's not uncommon for us to take in about 3000 calories per day, mainly from fast food an corn syrup. Time and money favor fast food. - bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22scarily enough, the a lot of the other restaurants around the world actually have good food. go to mcdonald's japan or mcdonald's india and you'll see what i mean.
- wushu18t, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7i've had mcdonalds in the u.k. and china. the chicken was fabulous! mcdonalds outside the u.s. tastes like gourmet.
- Osagasu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9@Bmartin
I live in a four person Household. Three work full time with one going to school as well, one works part time and is a full time student. Somehow we manage to make a healthy dinner (including a salad) every night. The reason the people who get McD's ever night isn't because of an actual lack of time, but a perceived one. They look at the time after their 9-5 job and misjudge exactly how much time they have left in the day, thinking that a good meal takes an hour or more to cook, which isn't the case if they know what to do (Food Network's 30 minute meals is a good place to look for things that take less than an hour). Preparing part in advance (like pulling out meat the night before and putting it into the fridge to thaw) is one example of such.
In fact, I would daresay that with an indoor grill and pre-thawing the ground beef, that cooking hamburgers for instance could take less time than all the time spent in a fast food line during the dinner rush. - MrAbe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3from mc donalds uk website

Over the last 7 years, Trans Fatty Acids in our oil

we are continuing to test further potential
reductions. - kelbear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2In Japan, some McDonalds restaurants are well, restaurants, with a greeter to escort you to a table and waiters. The food quality of fast food varies depending on the location too, since the source of the food also changes.
- digdug2020, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1@Osagasu
Work 9-5 AHAHAHAHA yeah right, like 8-6 if you're lucky and get some time off that day. - skyteria, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Ya, Americans have a fast-pace lifestyle:
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/med_tel_vie-media-television-viewing - PdxPhoenix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So, just what do they serve in India? I know it's not dead cow (mmmmmm...dead cow), is it lamb/mutton burgers? or what? Really curious, I've never had an answer to that question before.
- mccalli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@wushu18t
I'm in the UK, we thought the same as you when we tried McDonalds in the US. I suspect it's just because you're not familiar with the exact test, rather than anything inherently superior in the food. - popfrogs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1@pdxphoenix: Last time I checked it was tofu burgers.
- Vic333, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"isn't because of an actual lack of time, but a perceived one"
Absolutely right. Everyone that I know that complains about not having enough time to eat right also knows what's happening on American Idol every week. If you have time to watch that crap, you have time to make a meal.
- Drexus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Yay.... :-P
They are only the last ones to get it done! Everyone else has finished the migration. Boy, don't they look like heros now. Real winners being last. I'm so sick of corporate deal padding.- robman8023, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6@Drexus
Yeah buddy, it has nothing to do with the fact that they are the largest fast-food chain in America by far, and a change of this magnitude takes some time and planning.
Not to mention the fact that they have to find a formulation of trans-fat free oil that preserves the taste we all know and love as much as possible (which is one of the major reasons why McDonald's has been so successful - you know what you're gonna get no matter where you are).
Not to mention the fact that they have to consider the shelf life of the new oil (trans-fats were introduced to increase the shelf-life of oils).
You're an idiot. - robman8023, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not to mention the fact that they're probably only 8 months behind KFC...is that so bad?

- Gholas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Both the fries and hash browns have already switched to a non trans fat product (meaning the blanching process, not the actually process of cooking them at the stores).
I believe the oil is supposed to change sometime toward the end of summer/early fall.
I work in distribution of McD product, so I get info on this from time to time.- Drexus, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16"I believe the oil is supposed to change sometime toward the end of summer/early fall."

- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12You remind me of those commercials where it shows a kid's face as he yells "You're fat!", "You loser!", "No one likes you, Fatty Fat-Fat!" only to find out the kid's fat and he's yelling at himself in a mirror.
- opiv421, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9that IS a tasty burger.. err fries.
- Buddhist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mind if I have some of your tasty beverage to wash it down?
- wwwspirit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Not to be a killjoy but this is a semi-annual thing with McDonalds. Seriously, how many times have they announced plans to get rid of transfats, hmm? I KNOW they made the same announcement at about the same time last year, and I think they did it the year before, too.
I don't know, maybe THIS time is the real one, but it looks to me more like an annual publicity stunt.- robman8023, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Find the articles or it didn't happen.
- canUdi9it, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They have no choice in NYC. The deadline to remove trans fats is July 2007. So they might as well do it for the whole country while they're at it.
They couldn't care less about the health of their customers. It's all about making an addictive product for profit. Thanks to NYC for finally forcing McD to change their oil. - wwwspirit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Just for one: http://www.prwatch.org/node/5698
So, actually they've been making this announcement for FOUR YEARS.
Or has it been 5 ... http://v.mercola.com/blogs/public_blog/McDonald-s-Finally-Gets-Around-to-Making-Trans-Fat-Free-French-Fries-4893.aspx

But yes, now that you mention it, the NYC ban will probably be enough to get them to stop lying about it.

- winmywii, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I had McDonalds for the first time in at least a year at the Pittsburgh International Airport. I don't know if it was just that McDonald's, but it was the least greasy one I have ever ate at (almost edible). It even made me consider stopping there on the way top work one day, but then I decided that the food still sucks.
- Ottawa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0
So they're still not perfect - they are doing better. We can't sneer at improvement and expect to have our encouragement taken seriously. I don't like McD, but most of my neighbors do - telling them that they are fools eating ***** hardly seems like the psychology to encourage change.
Rock on McDonalds - and take the rest of the fastfooders with 'em - go next for grassfed and antibiotic free and certified sustainable - but you can't win against a deadset enemy, and you can't persuade people by pissing on them. - kiduk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Well, some of you don't realize how good this is. Trans fats are not burned, until all other fat in your body is burned. Unlike with other fats, there isn't any burned when you first eat it; it goes directly into clogging arteries and such.
And as proof of its evil, they recommend 20g of Sat. fats a day, while they recommend no trans fats at all, ever.
It may not make a difference immediately, but if people's behavior remains the same, but the trans fats are gone, people will gain less weight.
EDIT: Hydrogenated oils=trans fat- whovian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ kiduk:
I've been doing my own research on trans fats. Do you have a scientific reference for the part about trans fats not being burned until all other fat in your body is burned? That was not my recollection. Thanks for your help. - ilovethissite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Trans fat is harder to burn, its proven fact why manufactures who use them don't want to lose them because its the one cheap oil that holds their baked and frozen products together the best.
Just do a google on partially hydrogenated oil (aka Trans fat) you'll be amazed on the danger it is to consume this ingrident and the greediness of manufactures who only want to make more money at the risk of human health to include this as a cheaper alternative in foods. - sigintop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just to add some of my very basic chemistry knowledge. The cis- formation of the fat is easier to break apart due to its stability level. Trans is a lot more stable and is thus harder for the body to break it down and use since fat is an energy storage system (among other things).
- gregfadein, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This is nonsense. Virtually all fats consumed are converted into cholesterol by lipase and bile before they hit the blood stream. This is why all human fat has a consistent density despite the varying fats we eat. If this didn't happen, people that consumed primarily non-saturated fats like oils would be "squishier" as their fat would be liquid.
Trans fat increases your ratio of LDL to HDL (colloquially known as "raising your cholesterol," since the effect is that your body has a diminished ability to shuttle around the cholesterol you do have).
- whovian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ kiduk:
- McHoffa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3after not eating fast food in a long time I can't stand it now... it is expensive for a full meal and tastes like hell... I work full time and have PLENTY of time to cook a nice full meal for the kids every evening... and still have time to do other things with them before bedtime... it's called not spending all your free time in a recliner watching tv...
people get so busy doing absolutely nothing... and they wonder why they gain weight? - rmetzger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Well it wont stop people from getting fat.
In responce to a few other comments; mc dicks abroad is acutely more enjoyable usually than locally. I have enjoyed mcds in all these locations and each meal was pretty good: italy, germany, england, china as well as a few more - kaiser44, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@Candi9Mayor bloomberg is a ass, and so are you if you really believe that fast food is addicting
Welcome to the nanny state,
people like you are so far up you're own asses you believe the ***** you spew out is worthy of attention.
Food fascist. - shiftless, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's good to hear, even though I can't bring myself to eat anything they make.
- Red_Eye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Buried as inaccurate. Places like McDonald's aren't really eliminating Tran Fats just cutting it down so they can round it down to zero. Go to KFC's web site and try to have more than a 5 piece serving of boneless HBBQ wings for example. Single serving is 0Grams trans fat, two servings is .5 Gram.
Technically by FDA approved advertising standards this is all ok, nothing to see, move along...- ilovethissite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's true, and that goes for all food products that advertise Zero 0 Trans fat.
If you want True Trans Fat free, you have to read the INGREDIENTS
partially hydrogenated oil = Trans fat
interesterified oil = Trans fat alternative that's actually worse than Trans fat
- ilovethissite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's true, and that goes for all food products that advertise Zero 0 Trans fat.
- alternotion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have seen McDonalds portray their fries and burgers as "health food" in some countries. Completely misleading be it transfat or not.
- RST1123, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They're going from trans fat to haggis oil
- MadMastaZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I guess they got tired of people trying to sue Mcdonalds because they are getting fat.
- FnordBob, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0"healthier oil"?
- xSKYSCRAPERx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They should fry the fries in mineral oil, sure it would cost more but the food would be out the customers body so fast they'll just pitch a tent next to a porta-potty and ***** there lives away.[As most people do anyways]
- cocoamix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The french fries I make at home have 3 ingredients: potatoes, canola oil, salt. They taste better than McDonalds fries.

- ilovethissite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They say that every year and never do.
Wendy's were the first to announce, but I wouldn't trust that every one of their restaurants have trans fat free menu. If you ask their employees they'll tell you they cook their food all in the same bater.
KFC announced this year and I drove past a KFC the other day, they even had a 0 Trans fat sign on their markee. - DeusNova, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Hopefully it won't ruin the taste.
- ATHEISTinHELL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2If the company wants to do it them selves thats fine. But in some states they are banning trans fat. I'm sick of the government telling me what i can put into my body. We all know fast food is not healthy we don't need nutrition information on fast food to tell us how bad it is for you. Fast food is not meant to be eaten that much and if you do thats your choice no one else's.
