- keyboardduder, on 10/11/2007, -11/+62lol, when will people learn?
Its like taking a teaspoon out of a bowl of ***** and saying, "Its Better Now" - meldroc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35This might be in the cards. The reason why fast food joints use trans-fats is because they're cheap, and they keep for a long time (because even microbes won't eat that *****.) They don't make the food tasty - in fact their taste is somewhat nasty.
By switching to non-trans-fat oils, the price will go up a bit because it's a bit more expensive, and the oil won't keep as long before going rancid, but it will taste better. And not clog up your arteries so fast - there's a reason why doctors want to flat-out ban trans-fat. It's slow poison that your liver doesn't know how to metabolize, thus it builds up in your bloodstream. - baddriver, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29I'll believe it when I see it. McDonalds pulled this ***** back in 2003 claiming they were reducing the trans fat content of their oil. They advertised it like crazy how they were switching to a healthier oil. Then guess what, they forgot to actually change their oil. They got sued. They lost.
http://bantransfats.com/mcdonalds.html - bmartin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30Apparently those countries don't have the same problem this one does. The US has a fast-paced lifestyle. People wake up and drive to McDonald's for breakfast before work, grab a sausage biscuit combo and 100-oz. coffee, go home, then take their entire family to McDonald's so that they have time to read to their kids at night. A lot of people don't cook because both parents are working full-time.
Daily exercise is non-existent for most of the population. Junk food is much cheaper than produce. It's not uncommon for us to take in about 3000 calories per day, mainly from fast food an corn syrup. Time and money favor fast food. - bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22scarily enough, the a lot of the other restaurants around the world actually have good food. go to mcdonald's japan or mcdonald's india and you'll see what i mean.
- ProfChaosOmega, on 10/11/2007, -9/+28well i must like ass then.
wait.. - Pozer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17"at all U.S. restaurants by year-end" what about the other restaurants in the rest of the world?
- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12You remind me of those commercials where it shows a kid's face as he yells "You're fat!", "You loser!", "No one likes you, Fatty Fat-Fat!" only to find out the kid's fat and he's yelling at himself in a mirror.
- mateo60, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Thank God, now McDonalds food is 100% healthy!
- Gella321, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10There you go, America: Eat *****
- Gholas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Both the fries and hash browns have already switched to a non trans fat product (meaning the blanching process, not the actually process of cooking them at the stores).
I believe the oil is supposed to change sometime toward the end of summer/early fall.
I work in distribution of McD product, so I get info on this from time to time. - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9If they start frying the fries in beef tallow like the old days, I'll start going there again.
- Drexus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Yay.... :-P
They are only the last ones to get it done! Everyone else has finished the migration. Boy, don't they look like heros now. Real winners being last. I'm so sick of corporate deal padding. - Drexus, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16"I believe the oil is supposed to change sometime toward the end of summer/early fall."
Wow. The oil stays in that bucket for that long?!!! - opiv421, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9that IS a tasty burger.. err fries.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11"And no, I'm not exagerating. "
Yes you are. Eating your own ***** is toxic. McDonalds' fries are not. - Osagasu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9@Bmartin
I live in a four person Household. Three work full time with one going to school as well, one works part time and is a full time student. Somehow we manage to make a healthy dinner (including a salad) every night. The reason the people who get McD's ever night isn't because of an actual lack of time, but a perceived one. They look at the time after their 9-5 job and misjudge exactly how much time they have left in the day, thinking that a good meal takes an hour or more to cook, which isn't the case if they know what to do (Food Network's 30 minute meals is a good place to look for things that take less than an hour). Preparing part in advance (like pulling out meat the night before and putting it into the fridge to thaw) is one example of such.
In fact, I would daresay that with an indoor grill and pre-thawing the ground beef, that cooking hamburgers for instance could take less time than all the time spent in a fast food line during the dinner rush. - wwwspirit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Just for one: http://www.prwatch.org/node/5698
So, actually they've been making this announcement for FOUR YEARS.
Or has it been 5 ... http://v.mercola.com/blogs/public_blog/McDonald-s-Finally-Gets-Around-to-Making-Trans-Fat-Free-French-Fries-4893.aspx
and ... http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2004/11/01/transfats_mcdonalds041101.html
and.. http://www.transfreeamerica.org/press/200407221.html
But yes, now that you mention it, the NYC ban will probably be enough to get them to stop lying about it. - wwwspirit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Not to be a killjoy but this is a semi-annual thing with McDonalds. Seriously, how many times have they announced plans to get rid of transfats, hmm? I KNOW they made the same announcement at about the same time last year, and I think they did it the year before, too.
I don't know, maybe THIS time is the real one, but it looks to me more like an annual publicity stunt. - canUdi9it, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They have no choice in NYC. The deadline to remove trans fats is July 2007. So they might as well do it for the whole country while they're at it.
They couldn't care less about the health of their customers. It's all about making an addictive product for profit. Thanks to NYC for finally forcing McD to change their oil. - wushu18t, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7i've had mcdonalds in the u.k. and china. the chicken was fabulous! mcdonalds outside the u.s. tastes like gourmet.
- TedwardRoberts, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I noticed when I went to McDonald's for the first time in a while yesterday that they now put "nutritional" information on the boxes. Knowing my chicken nuggets, fries, and coke were worth 1000 calories certainly ruined the thing for me.
Oh well, I'm already a fat ass, may as well revel in it. - Red_Eye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Buried as inaccurate. Places like McDonald's aren't really eliminating Tran Fats just cutting it down so they can round it down to zero. Go to KFC's web site and try to have more than a 5 piece serving of boneless HBBQ wings for example. Single serving is 0Grams trans fat, two servings is .5 Gram.
Technically by FDA approved advertising standards this is all ok, nothing to see, move along... - 70ny, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Those were the good ol days. McDonalds fries were not that good after that. Many people forgot all about that change. Through the magic of marketing people think they are still the same.
Beef tallow tastes so good. - dosterm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7OK. I have a big problem with McDonald's too. I think it's ridiculous how fast food has taken over everywhere.
But let's not get flustered that the list of ingredients seems long... it's just listing the full range of oils that they might use. If you take a fair look at that list, it boils down to these ingredients:
Potatoes, oil, beef flavoring, salt, and preservatives.
You'd probably be better off without the preservatives, but honestly, I think you do exaggerate when you say ***** is better for you.
The answer is to eat less of them and do it more rarely, if you must eat them at all. - robman8023, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not to mention the fact that they're probably only 8 months behind KFC...is that so bad?

The following products are cooked in a blend of
partially hydrogenated rapeseed oil and nonhydrogenated
high-oleic rapeseed oil: Chicken
McNuggets, McChicken Premiere, McChicken
Sandwich, Filet-o-Fish, Fish Fingers, Vegetable
Deluxe, French Fries, Hash browns, and
Apple Pies.
Over the last 7 years, Trans Fatty Acids in our oil
have been reduced from 30% to below 10%, and
we are continuing to test further potential
reductions. - cocoamix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The french fries I make at home have 3 ingredients: potatoes, canola oil, salt. They taste better than McDonalds fries.
- dotspace, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thank you for looking after us, McDonald's.
- kelbear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2In Japan, some McDonalds restaurants are well, restaurants, with a greeter to escort you to a table and waiters. The food quality of fast food varies depending on the location too, since the source of the food also changes.
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2 Who needs trans fats anyway?Tthese "clogging fats" are banned, people should still hold themselves responsible for what they choose to consume and what they don't
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Mayonnaise eaten by the handful seems to work for me.
- djj3w, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2yes. Burgerville has been doing this for years. hooray! And they still taste great. honey mustard rules with em too... ;)

Perhaps the difference is NYC _ordered_ all restaurants to do it vs. McDys _volunteering_ to do it themselves? - mccalli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@wushu18t
I'm in the UK, we thought the same as you when we tried McDonalds in the US. I suspect it's just because you're not familiar with the exact test, rather than anything inherently superior in the food. - PdxPhoenix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So, just what do they serve in India? I know it's not dead cow (mmmmmm...dead cow), is it lamb/mutton burgers? or what? Really curious, I've never had an answer to that question before.
- SlayerKid99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'll believe when I see it.
- 5aculu5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The fries have sucked ever since they stopped using 45 pound blocks of lard in the early 90's. You are going to die anyway. They will now taste even crappier.
- ilovethissite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's true, and that goes for all food products that advertise Zero 0 Trans fat.
If you want True Trans Fat free, you have to read the INGREDIENTS
partially hydrogenated oil = Trans fat
interesterified oil = Trans fat alternative that's actually worse than Trans fat - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How am I going to maintain my 48 inch waist?
- ilovethissite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Trans fat is harder to burn, its proven fact why manufactures who use them don't want to lose them because its the one cheap oil that holds their baked and frozen products together the best.
Just do a google on partially hydrogenated oil (aka Trans fat) you'll be amazed on the danger it is to consume this ingrident and the greediness of manufactures who only want to make more money at the risk of human health to include this as a cheaper alternative in foods. - JohnnyZito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What about the butane?
- sigintop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just to add some of my very basic chemistry knowledge. The cis- formation of the fat is easier to break apart due to its stability level. Trans is a lot more stable and is thus harder for the body to break it down and use since fat is an energy storage system (among other things).
- ATHEISTinHELL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2If the company wants to do it them selves thats fine. But in some states they are banning trans fat. I'm sick of the government telling me what i can put into my body. We all know fast food is not healthy we don't need nutrition information on fast food to tell us how bad it is for you. Fast food is not meant to be eaten that much and if you do thats your choice no one else's.
- XZanatos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The funny thing about this whole trans-fat situation is that they were originally promoted as the solution to getting away from "saturated-fats", the "trans-fats" of the late 80 and early 90s. Ten years later everyone started figuring out they were worse than the cure. So once we get rid of all these trans-fats I bet ya saturated-fats are going to come back as the new 'bad guy' to healthy living. Why can't we all just eat like the Japanese and Chinese??
- whovian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ kiduk:
I've been doing my own research on trans fats. Do you have a scientific reference for the part about trans fats not being burned until all other fat in your body is burned? That was not my recollection. Thanks for your help. - dosterm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3@Achalemoipas
Your argument is awesome, so I hesitate to say this. I'm concerned that you may be one of those people that you mentioned as having a poo fetish. This is not really meant to be insulting, but your argument leads me to believe that might be the case.
I'm just gonna propose that there's a rather large middle ground between consuming FDA approved substances and eating human feces. Not that I love the FDA, but we're talking about citric acid as the main preservative. That's not exactly a freaky substance. ***** might be worse, but I'm not gonna assume either way just because it has a long chemical-ish name. I'm gonna go with the side that has controlled testing by scientists rather than believe the guy on the internet who tells me that eating ***** is the bee's knees. -
