- burstaneurysm, on 07/23/2008, -1/+103I love how AXE conducted this study.
- jcgreenx, on 07/23/2008, -4/+106People should only be allowed to stink within 15 feet of a bar.
- raublekick, on 07/23/2008, -48/+123All smoking bans should be repealed and leave the ban up to bar owners, not city councils. If a bar owner doesn't want people smoking in his/her establishment, that's fine. But if a bar owner doesn't want people constantly walking in and out and lingering outside its doors, that should be fine too.
- dopste, on 07/23/2008, -8/+80PUBLIC HEALTH WARNING: BEING ALIVE LEADS TO DEATH!!
- EquinnoxX, on 07/23/2008, -5/+54Just drink more.
- uptown, on 07/23/2008, -8/+56This is spam with a "study" sponsored by Axe. Do you really think a company that pays its bills by selling a spray that supposedly makes you smell better is going to say ... "nah, everybody smells great already"?
Bury away. - potamkin, on 07/23/2008, -77/+113Repeal the smoking ban
- brettg102, on 07/23/2008, -23/+53The smoking ban is destroying small bars and private clubs. Repeal it. You already had the choice to frequent these places or not and speak with your dollars...but no, you had to FORCE everyone to change. -non-smoking Ohio resident, who wants people to smoke if they'd like to.
- popatheart, on 07/23/2008, -10/+38Since when do people who hang out in bars care so much about their health?
- Nlewis4, on 07/23/2008, -5/+30I've noticed a lot of bars (even nicer ones) smell worse because smoke is no longer covering up the smell of yeast from spilled beers and also from the drains under the bar
- SolituSneiku, on 07/23/2008, -39/+63no
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -7/+30I hate the smoking ban in the UK. Why not let people decide if they want to go to a smoking or non-smoking pub? As Bill Hicks said, “If my smoking bothers you I suggest you look around the world we live in and shut the hell up”.
- lpferris, on 07/23/2008, -6/+29Who would have guessed that bars would smell bad? Shocking. Does anyone actually care?
- shadeOfGrey, on 07/23/2008, -4/+24If bars benefited from banning smoking then they would ban it themselves. If there are enough nonsmokers who refused to go to smoking bars then there would be a huge market for bars that disallowed it. No one is forced to go to a bar, why should the government control what types of legal activity goes on in a private business. If it was that big of an issue the private market would straighten things out.
- Uiaccsk, on 07/23/2008, -3/+23Well put, and while I agree, what bar owner in their right mind would ban cigarettes with their immediate competitors allowing it? The employees are the ones who are getting unfairly exposed to second-hand smoke, the owners arent really the victims here, at least not primarily. Its a nice idea, but it's not very practical to hand the decision to the bar owners.
and i know its not really clear, but i dont favor any ban on smoking cigarettes in bars, friggin oversensitive society, its ***** air, just breathe it. - DrDragun, on 07/23/2008, -5/+20The smoking ban is for the bartenders, not the patrons. It is their work environment where they punch in for 6-8 hrs a day, possibly 12 on a double shift. The toxicity of second hand smoke as a carcinogen in small bars with lots of smoking patrons would far exceed the general guidelines for a safe work environement.
- sisko2k5, on 07/23/2008, -1/+14I love the quantified smellyness. Twice as smelly as an animal shelter. 15 times as smelly as a coffee shop. I need me one of them smellometers!
- HigherLogic, on 07/23/2008, -5/+17The smoking ban is stupid. The owner of the establishment should be the one who says, "You can/cannot smoke here." If you go to a bar where the owner doesn't mind of people smoke and you don't like it, go somewhere else. It's that easy. This ban is about as ridiculous as prohibition.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -10/+22Bars now smell of stale urine and Axe body spray. I'd like my cancer back please.
- derrrface, on 07/23/2008, -8/+19As an alcoholic & chain-smoker; I'm getting a kick out of these cough cough cough....... +++carrier lost+++
- BossKey, on 07/23/2008, -8/+19When I go to a club because I want to see a band, I enjoy the show a lot more now. When smoking was allowed, the smoke would wear me down faster (I suffer from asthma and allergies). Now, I notice that I can easily last until the early morning end of a show, and it's a whole lot easier to dance for a longer time.
Because of these reasons, my friends and I love the smoking ban. Now when we go to clubs and bars, we stay longer, which is good for the bars. We stay because we no longer start to get that worn-down feeling after sitting in a could of smoke for hours, and we no longer bring home the stink of cigarettes. It just feels better in bars now, because the air isn't full of crap.
Sure, some posts say bars lost business, but other bars gained business as non-smokers who stayed away because of the smoke now feel comfortable going in and staying. - gbates31, on 07/23/2008, -1/+12Here in Vegas there's a smoking ban on establishments that also serve food. Business is down 40% or worse in some places. The casinos are exempt of course. The Terrible Hurst chain here went from a $12M profit to a $8M loss in 1 year!! $20 million drop! As expected the smokers are flocking to the major casinos in droves while smaller places are going out of business.
- brettg102, on 07/23/2008, -5/+15Who is forcing them to be employed there? Most of the people I know who work at a bar do it because they want to smoke and drink at work.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -4/+14That being said, I remember when the law came in, we went to the night club, and someone let this awful fart.
The fart was one of those hideous ones, when you smell it, it's like you get that feeling like you've just eaten a meal.
I'm sure the owner was proud though... - brettg102, on 07/23/2008, -2/+12States need to take into account those bordering towns and cities which get their entertainment industries destroyed by these bans. I live in cincinnati, and bars and clubs are closing or struggling all around, especially private clubs(veterans clubs, 4H, Moose clubs, etc). Why stay in Cincinnati and spend your dollars here when you can go to Indiana to gamble and smoke, and go to Kentucy to smoke and get super cheap cigs? Areas like Newport, KY are BOOMING because of this fact.
- duk0r, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9Yeah Glade is going to do the trick. It hardly works in a house.
- SublimeRuin, on 07/23/2008, -4/+13First thing I noticed when it started to get warm out. Instead of a cloud of smoke around me, it's a cloud of stench. People really need to use more deodorant.....
- coyote1284, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9It seems to me that the definition of "public place" is what is in contention here. Is a privately owned business a "public place" or a "private place open to the public"? If you define a bar as a "public place" that you should have no problem with being apprehended for "public intoxication" while still in a bar. What seems even more heavy-handed about certain state's laws is that the bans cover not only private clubs, where you need a paid membership to enter, but anywhere alcohol is served, to include outdoor venues (see Iowa Westfair Amphitheater). Here in Omaha, NE/Council Bluffs, IA certain venues do not allow smoking within and do not allow re-entry. It's not so bad for a concert that lasts just a few hours, but for an all day (outdoor) event it's plain ridiculous.
- dickeywayne, on 07/23/2008, -3/+12I thought the smoking ban was supposed to *increase* bar business, because now all of the non-smokers could go to bars. Why are the bars all suddenly going out of business?
- duk0r, on 07/23/2008, -2/+11Here in Austin, TX there are bars that let you "smoke at your own risk". You smoke in the bar, the bar owners don't give you any *****. But if a cop comes in and sees you, your taking home a ticket.
That just comes to show you how much these ordinances are messing with business in bars and pool halls. - evil-doer, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10a bar that smells like beer, imagine that
- lisitpc, on 07/23/2008, -1/+9Uh, aren't the bars and clubs poisoning the patrons with alcohol now?
- bar10dr, on 07/23/2008, -3/+11Ban people from bars!!
- Iwantawii, on 07/23/2008, -1/+9…it was me
- lisitpc, on 07/23/2008, -2/+10How are you being forced? Didn't you go into the bar voluntarily?
- chopsky, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8Angers, so basically the law assumes that all bars are jam packed and all homes are spacious.
How can you devise a law that relies on how many people stand in a given area. Ridiculous. - inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8banning smoke in bars is ***** lame
- forcedfx, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7NJ has had a smoking ban in effect for a while now and I don't think I've seen of the bars near me losing money. They're always packed... to the point where I don't like going because there are too many people.
- kateyall, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7You should really start. It's wonderful.
- Nlewis4, on 07/23/2008, -2/+9instead you get to smell like ***** all the time!
- potamkin, on 07/23/2008, -4/+11cawpin, you say you shouldn't have to put up with it if you don't want to. ***** off home then.
- shadeOfGrey, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8Exactly. If all these people whining about the smoke went exclusively to nonsmoking bars then there would be a huge market for them. Bar owners would voluntarily ban smoking to increase revenue, unfortunately that doesn't happen though. Owners know that banning smoking is just going to piss off their smoking patrons and not bring in any new.
- kinerry, on 07/23/2008, -10/+17They can work somewhere else, it's not exactly a high paying job working at a bar
- RealmDown, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7Nice catch.
- chopsky, on 07/23/2008, -3/+9You forget that a business requires consumers as well. Many customers don't like going to bars where there is smoking. So bars will ban smoking on their own accord in order to attract all those customers.
Eventually you'd have smoking and non-smoking bars competing. Freedom of choice. - dave122, on 07/23/2008, -2/+8I love how people dig down comments that don't agree with their opinion even if they make perfectly logical sense. see "they have no choice in where they work, right?"
Funny how that works. Liberty is only important if it reaches the ends you personally desire. - imjust2purrfect, on 07/23/2008, -7/+13stinky drunk men? count me in.
/s - Andrwmorph, on 07/23/2008, -5/+11Go to a non-smoking bar.
Freedom hater! - lead2thehead, on 07/23/2008, -5/+11Nobody is forcing you to go to a bar.
- saranagati, on 07/23/2008, -5/+11@cawpin
that's really like saying i hate getting ***** on by birds in public, we should ban birds from the public. -
