- pyro789x, on 06/22/2008, -2/+24I don't need to read an article about what it's like to be a hypochondriac... I am one. It's horrible. The more concerned about my health I am, the worse it gets. The best remedy I've found is to try to be as healthy as I can be, including eating right and exercising. It sucks though, it's stressful and tiring. The worst part is when you've finally had enough, when you finally can't take anymore.. Usually, when you've had enough of something, you can run away from it, or otherwise distance yourself from it. You can't run away from your own body though, and it's devastating.
- inactive, on 06/22/2008, -2/+19I have the opposite problem, if I had a tumor sticking out of my head, I'd deny it and think it was a bit zit.
- BladeNd64, on 06/22/2008, -0/+17My favorite quote of the article:
"My favorite hypochondriac was a cousin thrice removed who was convinced she had stomach cancer. Sure she was dying, she was too afraid to go the doctor until the pain became completely unbearable. Her stomach tumor was born six hours later. He weighed seven pounds, and they named him Francis." - happyseamonster, on 06/22/2008, -0/+12I diagnosed myself as a hypochondriac - turns out I had all these other diseases.
- houndeyex, on 06/22/2008, -1/+10...but no one on Digg can seem to find them.
Had to. - bimtott, on 06/22/2008, -1/+9The best thing you can do is seek therapy. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, in fact.
- bimtott, on 06/22/2008, -2/+10Because it's well-written?
Or maybe because it's late on a Sat. night? - alapoet, on 06/21/2008, -4/+12Really, laugh out loud funny! I spilled my damn coffee!
- bimtott, on 06/22/2008, -0/+7I hope by "studying psychology" you're just taking a class in college...because if you plan on actually being a psychologist, consider something else. Sympathy and empathy for "these people" is EXACTLY what a psychologist needs.
- BishkekBuddy, on 06/21/2008, -3/+10Gad... if it had been written by a male, I would have SWORN it was written by my brother! Hah!
- slvrbullet87, on 06/22/2008, -0/+7Easy way to tell if you have hypochondria, you have more than 1 life threatening disease that you diagnosed without the help of a doctor
- aukxsona, on 06/22/2008, -0/+5It's similar to an eating disorder. For me, I have to eat or not eat, for the whole day or week. I went on "not eat mode" for most of my teen years. I was extremely thin and hospitalized a lot. Then I went on "eat" mode and well... Either way I have to be on or off. There is no counting calories, and if there is everything better be liquid and sugar free damn it. If I do eat at all has to be raw one week, or the next it has to be all clean protein. Then there are days where all I want in a donut, Doritos, and ice cream at the same time in large quantities until I feel ill. I don't make sense. The messed up thing is, you can't just say HEY no more eating so I don't have to deal with this *****. No you have to eat. For the longest time I just ate and tried not to think. What a mess that landed me in...okay I am rambling.
- NSResponder, on 06/22/2008, -0/+5It may be a problem, but I think most people would prefer your company to that of a hypochondriac.
-jcr - MaxPowers, on 06/22/2008, -0/+4Hypochondria is just an anxiety disorder, plain and simple. It isn't enjoyable to live with it, and it isn't easy to get rid of it.
- KingBroseph, on 06/22/2008, -0/+4The problem is I think i have hypochondria but i'm not actually a hypochondriac.
- blinky04, on 06/22/2008, -0/+4"I did not have lupus"
It's NEVER Lupus. - AshWii, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3"some people are so f*cked up in the head...i have no sympathy for these people" if psych is your major, you'll make a wonderful psychologist
- itsbob, on 06/22/2008, -1/+4Because its the only way we can get a message to you about that bump on your neck that has us all worried.
- kitkatsavvy, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3i used to be a hypochondriac because i started to get panic attacks..since my first major panic attack had "most" of the REAL symptoms of a heart attack - well - i thought i was having a heart attack! before that though, when i was 15yrs old, i bought a book called 'the odd brain' - which listed just about every psych disorder there is...anyway - since my brain is like a sponge, i read that book over and over again who knows how many times until the age of 20....i was nearly 20 when i got my first major panic attack - so then the hypochondria started like mad!
"In the last 20 years hypochondria has been renamed "somatoform disorder,"
i got the exact same diagnosis - and now - a good 6yrs later i finally know that i got diagnosed as a hypochondriac.....anyway, i went psychotic a good 6 months later - which is just the next step of this syndrome...the ONLY way to cure yourself is to convince yourself that yes - that toothpaste isnt poison, and YES im not having a heart attack etc - im cured of it now..PHEW - survivor me - Flashman, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3I am a hypochondriac, but therapy has helped a lot. I've diagnosed heart attacks, MS, stroke, cancer... probably dozens of times. Eventually one doctor realized that stress and depression were behind a lot of the problems, and since getting some therapy I've been suffering fewer headaches and worrying less generally.
- pyro789x, on 06/22/2008, -1/+4I'm not afraid of dying, but I don't want to go when I could have done something to stop it. That's part of the reason why I feel I always have to be on edge, because I know that when something goes wrong, every second counts.
- DigitalHippie73, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3If I think I'm a hypochondriac, does that mean I'm not?
- sonofashoe, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3Great stuff. Smart self depracating humor.
- AshWii, on 06/22/2008, -0/+3because it's better than the last 3 or 4 articles you submitted about gold laptops and you can't stand it
- gox35, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2Hilarious! I'm a nurse and have come across 100s
- MetalLizard, on 06/22/2008, -2/+4Most hypochondria can be traced back to fear of death. Don't fear the reaper, and you'll be alright. You can use religion as a crutch, try to ignore it the best you can until it catches up to you, or just accept it and move on.
- bimtott, on 06/22/2008, -1/+3Just read my own comment. Man I'm a douchebag.
- v1mk, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2Funny article. A bit long thou. I don't think living with the disorder would be all that funny.
- MaxPowers, on 06/22/2008, -0/+2Thats how it works. I've had the same problems my entire life and its nearly impossibly to rid yourself of the neurosis. Prozac definitely helps the panic attacks which lead to unnecessary hospital visits. but rationalizing is the key. I'll get so good at it that when I actually do develop some form of cancer I'll die believing it never existed.
- catkillcurious, on 06/22/2008, -1/+3Step on the happy pill express.
- JulyZerg, on 06/22/2008, -2/+4Ballpoint ink skin cancer... hah!

- linga99, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1Whoops... that may be me..
- daikiki, on 06/22/2008, -1/+2From the article:
I have a long list of very real syndromes and conditions, and the reason I'm so uncomfortable in my body is, in part, because it's such an uncomfortable place to be. I've had just about every annoying condition that doesn't actually affect your overall health: the nuisance diseases. There's the OCD and the IBS. There are the transient parasthesias, where random parts of my body go numb for no reason at all. I've been afflicted with eczema and allergies; appendicitis, gingivitis and tendonitis; carpal tunnel syndrome, Bell's palsy, essential tremor, heart irregularities, macromastia and hypoglycemia. I have skin conditions that make me prone to other skin conditions, and have been treated for scabies three times and ringworm twice in the last three years. I'm legally blind in one eye.

Brilliant. The writer is pretty much 50% enlightened. She understands she has hypochondria, but she's still suffering from everything that can't be disproved. And intestinal parasites. And bad breath. But mostly everything that can't be disproved. - inactive, on 06/22/2008, -2/+3I had weird smelling sweat, so I was convinced my kidneys/liver were failing.
Damn webMD. - TheNakedChef, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1From the article and from what you say it seems like Hypochondriacs have way too much spare time for their minds to wonder around and think about odd things. My ex was one too and that applied to her as well. any kind of pain was always instant leukaemia and she was out on a search for marrow transplant.
Maybe you should look into keeping your brain busy and preoccupied. Do some extreme sports. Something where you can get really hurt, maybe it will put your diseases in perspective. My suggestions are that you try some rock climbing, hang gliding, bungy jumping, snowboarding, white water rafting, paintball. Since you already going to gym, maybe you should also look into olympic lifting, power lifting or even strongman gyms. This training give you purpose and there's peer pressure on making sure that you improve and making you focus on one goal. There's also joining a club, like rowing, dragon boats, soccer, rugby, cycling. Training for marathon etc...
There's lots of possibilities, but a lot about it is on making you focus on a goal and it will take up a lot of your spare time (being bored) with trying to improve at certain things, going to gym doesn't give you a goal and purpose, going to dedicated gym does, even tough you might be far from the best, it doesn't matter. And the extreme sports should give you a who cares attitude. - najdorf, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1Obviously hypochondria is caused by nutrient deficiencies.
- rhabd0mancer, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1He should consider psychiatry.

- Totz83, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1Is this guy for real, probably typing that from his parents basement. And tomorrow you'll be a marine biologist with a deep seeded hate of water, jerk!
- wassim2k, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1I visited the doctor three times as I read through a medical encyclopedia in high school. You can convince yourself of a lot of things if you really believe in it.
- mapls, on 03/08/2009, -0/+0That is hilarious.
