Serious diseases genes revealed
news.bbc.co.uk — A major advance in understanding the genetics behind several of the world's most common diseases has been reported. The landmark Wellcome Trust study analysed DNA from the blood of 17,000 people to find genetic differences.

- chrisbosh123, on 10/11/2007, -36/+3This is the first step into curing serious diseases such as cancer but let us not forget the long term problems OF THE WORLD such as Global warming. Although this is a triumph in medical science, we should really concentrate on the things that can have the POTENTIAL to hurt alot more people than diseases.
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16You're an idiot Chris. You're statement doesn't even deserve a rebuttal. Last time I checked biological/medical scientists don't make cars and burn large quantities of oil while manufacturing things. Everyone has their place. That comment definitely doesn't have anything to do with this article or even make a persuasive point.
- eurocrisp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7yeah just forget my aunt's and thousands of other people's lung cancer, we have to figure out how to stop the climate from shifting first.
- Dakoman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9surely we can just do both at the same time
- allenwrench, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6These are conflicting priorities, because people diagnosed with lung cancer tend to drive less.
- ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I agree Chris doesn't deserve a rebuttal, but I can't help myself:
Maybe, just maybe, some of the people cured (or caught early and treated properly) will be the ones to solve your precious global climate issues. - FutureGuy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@chrisbosh123
Breaking news. We just found a deficiency in your genome ;)
I am all for fixing the global warming issue, but what has that to do with genetics!!! - scotticus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Right Chris, because molecular biologists and geneticists know how to fix the climate.
Maybe I'll get my car mechanic to fix my teeth.
Retard. - Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Chris you also have to realize that there exists data that hints that global warming is not man-made. If that indeed is the case, then all that time spent on changing weather patterns caused by solar activity could have been spent on health issues, or assisting developing countries. what then? Would you feel guilty?
- MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1But if I have herpes I'm ok right?
- TheOther1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Paris Hilton is OK, why wouldn't you be?
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1:: looks at paris hilton (PIC) :: Okay dude, start to worry!
- OUChevelleSS, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Did they find the genes that show those who can eat people's brains to gain their abilities? I must complete my father's research...
- Carsonauto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Good to see stuff like this make the front page. Although you could enhance it...

Linux used to reveal most serious genes EVER - idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I are serious scientist.
This are serious genes. - DrakeGTA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@ idonthack
ha ha, the only reason I opened this thread is to see who the first person to say "I are serious [something]; This are serious [something]" would be. On a related note, Can I has a cancer cure?"

- howitzeral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Exciting news! My only fear is that the health insurance companies will start using this type of information to raise people's rates or drop them. Not to mention employers refusing to hire people who have a higher risk for certain diseases. Hopefully both of these fears are unfounded.
- linagee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Health insurance companies should be the least of your fears. What if you try to apply for a mortgage and the bank says NO! because they have done your genetics and it says you won't be living another 30 years? Or if a potential employer uses this to make sure you are never hired?
- friedcalamari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Revealed? Why were they kept secret?
- TheRealMisterd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They never were secret but they soon will be.
Those good old patents to "encourage the advance of technology" with lock them away for good.

- Grivako, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I must be stupid as I am not sure what is being said here. Did they find genetic markers that let them identify these things or what? I need medical articles for dummies.
- Grok22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Many of the most common diseases are very complex, involving both 'nature' and 'nurture', genes interacting with our environment and lifestyles."
- Huh I didn't realize that there were 2 types of genes, 'nature' and 'nurture'.

I wish all communities thought like this. Knowledge is powerful, spread it, and things improve.
