- rizzo2008, on 06/11/2009, -36/+333Judged by some of the comments above you all want tobacco banned? Good luck getting marijuana legalized
How about keep them both legal and let people decide on their own. This government nanny state thing is pissing me off...next they'll tax fast food for being unhealty... - rancor01, on 06/12/2009, -5/+172This part blew my mind and made me think this was an article from the onion:
"Menthol cigarettes are initially exempt from the ban because of demands from the Congressional Black Caucus."
I suppose stereotypes are in place for a reason, huh? - zlatinb, on 06/11/2009, -27/+129This is fantastic. I really want to know what crap they put in the cigarettes. Right now I know about two chemicals
1. something that slows down the speed of burning. It is not present in all brands or all states. A Marlboro red purchased in New York burns much slower than the one purchased in a duty-free shop in EU
2. something that speeds up the absorption of nicotine by the red blood cells. It could be a lot of fun if its not harmful and works on THC :) - JoeHague, on 06/12/2009, -37/+133***** the FDA and the federal government- I just want to smoke, why can't you stay out of my ***** life/
- stoanhart, on 06/12/2009, -10/+93I agree with you that both should be legal, but I don't see any suggestions to ban tobacco, only to regulate the additives.
- TheDatabit, on 06/12/2009, -6/+68I hope this means they are going to put a bigger warning label on these things. I've been smoking for years and I've always wondering if they where healthy or not but that print is just to small. /s
- Coven, on 06/12/2009, -6/+62How is any of that "bad news" for smokers?
- MotherOfGod57, on 06/12/2009, -21/+76you people must really like for big brother to do all of your thinking for you.
- luke374, on 06/12/2009, -15/+67As someone who's never smoked a cigarette in my life: ***** you, government.
- reed311, on 06/12/2009, -10/+58It isn't about banning, it's about knowing the exact contents that are put into a product that you are purchasing so that you can know whether or not you want those chemicals in your body. Consumers really have no idea as to what exactly goes into these products and they might think twice before using them if they did -- thus reducing government spending on health care for people who choose to do so. It's bizarre because the people against this are generally against government health care, but smoking costs the tax payers billions of dollars each year in health care costs.
- ddawggin, on 06/12/2009, -3/+49It would have been better if it passed through and Obama veto'd it for that very reason.
- Wugie, on 06/12/2009, -7/+52Maybe its the cigarettes making you cough up blood, not menthol flavoring
- MotherOfGod57, on 06/12/2009, -36/+76piss off freedom, save us from or selves uncle sam.
- phosphor112, on 06/11/2009, -12/+52Personally, I don't smoke, or care to, so it doesn't bother me, but this is bad news for smokers. Some of the new regulations will be..:
1) Regulation of chemicals put in tobacco products
2) All flavors banned except for Menthol
3) No more "light" or "Low tar" packagings
4) Warnings are going to be more "powerful".
That's all I know so far. - ousthouse, on 06/12/2009, -9/+47... then they came for the smokers, but I didn't speak up because I wasn't a smoker.
- BeardedClem, on 06/12/2009, -5/+41That's right put the final nail in the coffin of the tobacco industry. When they go down so does $14.5 billion a year in both settlement payments and excise taxes, SCHIP is financed by that money and is already coming up short. Not to mention the fact that states pull down $20 billion themselves through their own sales and excise taxes.
One of two things are going to happen they'll have to tax everyone more for the money they lost or the government is going into the tobacco business. - amk29j, on 06/12/2009, -1/+34Does this mean flavored shisha is banned as well? I'm getting some quotes from some articles that say "fruit cigarettes" and others that say "fruit tobacco." I want my once a month hookah smoke!
- Evazan21, on 06/12/2009, -1/+33Something everyone has failed to mention so far is a major part of this bill is an extreme amount of regulation placed on any new tobacco products. As a result of this law no new products will be able to enter the market unless it is from a huge company that can afford the testing. The government just created a monopoly for Philip Morris which is why Phillip Morris, the larges cigarette company, is supporting this bill. All you naive people think the government actually has the public's best interest in mind. Our politicians are just stuffing their pockets with corporate pay offs as usual.
- pintomp3, on 06/12/2009, -6/+36Funny how the biggest opponents of the bill got the most money from the tobacco industry.
- murrdpirate, on 06/12/2009, -5/+35You have to be ***** kidding me. You really think this bill was passed because of the danger of second hand smoke? What a ***** joke. How about we just make it illegal to smoke in public? Why should people who smoke in their private homes have to pay?
You don't have a right to enjoy smoke-free restaurants. That is ridiculous. Let's say I open a restaurant right now. Are you going to march in there and demand that I don't allow smoking because you have the right to enjoy my restaurant with no smoke? How about you stay the ***** out of my restaurant? - Jeepinator, on 06/12/2009, -3/+31I can't believe they are banning flavored tobaccos. What purpose does that serve???
- matticusf1nch, on 06/12/2009, -12/+39Thumbs up times a hundred.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/12/2009, -28/+54Yeah, because your freedom is going to be so restricted by knowing the contents of the cigarettes you smoke. /s
- Bainemo, on 06/12/2009, -26/+51Hippies: they only hate smoke when it's not coming from them
- Jeepinator, on 06/12/2009, -1/+26Is 5 minutes too long for you to wait to get high?
Also, I feel like if I smoke a cig after I smoke some bud I get the high a bit faster and maybe a bit harder. Honestly, you might be on to something. - rizzo2008, on 06/12/2009, -7/+30banning certain types of it is the first step in banning all of it
- GrammerPants, on 06/12/2009, -1/+22This stood out in my mind, "Since 1998, the industry has spent nearly $308 million in lobbying to block the bill. Cigarette makers have seen sales shrink in the past decade."
- rancor01, on 06/12/2009, -17/+38Because in the "land of the free", its limiting my freedom.
- rizzo2008, on 06/12/2009, -7/+27
We should just ban or "regulate" anything that is potentially harmful to someone...that makes plenty of sense. So you coming into a bar with people that regularly smoke is the bar/smoker's problem? There are smoke free places you can go..
I don't even smoke but people like you are ridiculous - Gguillorn, on 06/12/2009, -4/+24Listen to this *****. Where do they get off telling people that they are no longer allowed to produce/purchase flavored tobacco?
- Jeepinator, on 06/12/2009, -4/+24Fruit doesn't hook kids on anything. It doesn't make it any more friendly either. Given that tobacco companies can't advertise to target kids, fruit serves no other purpose except to be an actual flavoring. It is legitimate. Blueberry hookah actually tastes good and I want to smoke it. Again this is a case of a large majority being oppressed by the stupid actions of a very small minority, one that may not even really exist.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+19the slow burn thing is a fire saftey deal - it's rings in the paper
- paulvq, on 06/12/2009, -2/+21"Why can't I go to any bar I choose with a buddy to enjoy a beer without worrying if I'm going to inhale a crap load of harmful chemicals?"
Why can't the bar owner choose whether or not he wants to allow people to smoke in his establishment? - innocentsinner, on 06/12/2009, -0/+18I think you mean "they only hate smoke when it's not coming from pot"
- nuyorican313, on 06/12/2009, -4/+22they argue the fruit flavored ones attract kids, its *****
- sithyiscool, on 06/12/2009, -2/+20"Companies had hoped the bill would make it easier to advertise the lower risk of the smokeless products."
I can see it now... "SNUS--- It kills 20% less of the people who use it!" - RonPauls, on 06/12/2009, -14/+31nanny state ftw
this bill entrenches the big tobacco interests because it bars entry to the industry
economics fail
war on drugs fail - creating more nontaxed black markets
increases crime by those who are addicted
honestly, the only thing blocking liberals from a proliberty point of view is elementary economics. - sherwin7, on 06/12/2009, -1/+18Cashier at Gas Station: How can I help you?
The black customer standing in front of me in line at the counter: Give me a pack of what I is.
Cashier: Excuse me what?
Customer: Give me a pack of what I is.
Cashier: I don't understand.
Customer: I said give me a pack of what I is. I want some Kool's man.
I honestly heard this conversation take place at a gas station about a year back. This conversation just reminded me of it so I figured I'd share the funny story with you all.
I had to try so hard not to laugh while I was standing behind the guy. Personally, if I was the cashier, I wouldn't have asked questions in the first place. I would have just given the guy a pack of Black and Mild's and been done with it :) - ZenMojo, on 06/12/2009, -5/+22When did civil libertarians go from demanding freedom to demanding ignorance? Warnings on packages and ingredient lists = AWESOME. Now I know which ***** is going to kill me faster.
- Jeepinator, on 06/12/2009, -4/+21Not when he is polite and smokes away from others.
- statismisdead, on 06/12/2009, -31/+47Personal responsibility? What are you.. some kind of right wing extremist?? The government will take care of all our needs and Obama is the messiah.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -2/+18I don't smoke and never will but this bill is such *****!
- mparker21311, on 06/12/2009, -3/+19Libertarianism is this radical notion that you don't own other people.
LP.org - inactive, on 06/12/2009, -6/+21Government! I'm stupid! Tell me what I should and shouldn't do! Here is all of my money too.
- mrmidgetman, on 06/12/2009, -4/+19The decision should be left to supply and demand. The federal government should only be allowed to govern cigarette smoking on public property.
If that many people care about second hand smoke they wont eat at restaurants that allow smoking and the restaurants will stop allowing smoking but if it turns out to be a few whiny people that don't have a huge impact on business than restaurants should be able to allow smoking.
The government is taking peoples money and using that money to take away rights. - Gguillorn, on 06/12/2009, -5/+20I feel that as a smoker, he should have a little ***** respect for personal responsibility. I smoke, and many of my friends smoke. Not one of us is unaware of the risks. It's 2009, everybody in America knows that cigarettes can cause cancer, let people gamble with their health if they want.
- Bloodwine, on 06/12/2009, -8/+23It's funny that so many morons think that we are going to legalize pot, when the government has been on a warpath against tobacco.
If pot is ever legalized, it'll have some heavy duty sin taxes attached to it. - VonBargenJL, on 06/12/2009, -5/+20looks like youre being buried by your fellow smokers.
oh no! now they have to restrict ad placement more and put more details on their packaging. - ousthouse, on 06/12/2009, -2/+16Wow, that would be racist if it were an Onion article.
- asgardshill, on 06/12/2009, -4/+18You must be inconsolable at the thought of so many people freely driving automobiles. Everywhere you go, people smell like tailpipe effluent and nobody's shaming all those drivers for polluting our atmosphere.
