- elliotys, on 11/07/2009, -1/+50You say lack of vitamin C, I say increase in Pirating.
- Gonthim, on 11/07/2009, -1/+24Take this with a grain of salt. Or a barrel. It's the Daily Mail.
- AmishRefugee, on 11/07/2009, -0/+18a friend of mine at my university got scurvy last year. it's still possible. not sure how much music he was downloading though
- rjbeckjr, on 11/07/2009, -0/+12Christ. You need to have a severe Vitamin C deficiency over a period of MONTHS to get scurvy. I mean, I didn't eat too healthy when I was a kid, but I never suffered from severe deficiency disorders. What are our children eating these days?
- 2goats1tub, on 11/07/2009, -1/+13It's the Daily Mail, tomorrow they'll say vitamin C causes cancer.
- Kronos6948, on 11/07/2009, -0/+9Jam sandwiches are loaded with Vitamin C. It's what makes fruits tart. It's what makes sour candy sour. You can't go anywhere in the US without tripping over Ascorbic Acid, aka Vitamin C.
- KyotoWolf, on 11/07/2009, -0/+9Why do people keep digging up Daily Mail stories?
- fury420, on 11/07/2009, -0/+8part of the issue is education & training, not just a lack of funds
Yeah, you certainly can create a diet around inexpensive healthy ingredients, but very few people do.
the stereotypical "cheap" food items are in general far more expensive & worse for you than raw ingredients for much healthier dishes.
My favorite examples are whole grains and legumes. Dried beans, chickpeas, lentils, etc... can be obtained in bulk for next to nothing, or canned at big-box food stores for under 70 cents a can. Same with whole grains, from the common brown rice to more uncommon choices like whole wheat, oat or rye groats. Tons of nutrition, yet inexpensive and with a shelf life of months if not years. - CrazyEddie041, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6"Scurvy on rise among children due to lack of vitamin C"
Is there another cause of scurvy? - Howitzer86, on 11/07/2009, -1/+7Big Macs have tomatoes in them, and according to that article, even the french fries is enough to prevent scurvy.
You know what I think they're eating? Candy bars and Mountain Dew. - rpapi100, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6People really need to start learning how to use a crockpot. It's amazing. Most recipes go as follow:
1. drop vegetables and meat in crockpot with a little water in the morning. set to low.
2. come back from work in the afternoon and put on keep warm.
3.eat and put the excess in fridge or in the freezer depending on if your eating the leftovers for diner tomorrow or a next week.
4. Rinse & Repeat.
(Considering this is digg, I should of probably added a ???? and PROFIT !!!! somewhere. Oh well.) - c3rb85, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6@Howitzer86
Big macs do not have tomatoes on them. However there is vitamin C in pickles which are on a big mac as well as Onions which are on a big mac
It's pretty hard in my opinion though to not get vitamin C these days. Any juice you buy will most likely come with 100% of your daily intake in a serving. - Merakon, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6Broccoli has a lot of vitamin c, more than oranges. So when you parents tell you to eat your broccoli you should eat your goddamn broccoli.
- allnuts, on 11/07/2009, -1/+6I suppose it is unfair to assume that people with not much money feed their chilren junk food, jam sandwiches etc.
If you are a good parent and feeding your children properly is down to the person you are not the income you have. - WombleSlayer, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5"But by 2007/08, the latest year for which figures are available, there were no fewer than 94 cases"
Good god! We must start ramming limes down every child's mouth in the country! - BluZebra, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5Wat?
Don't kids drink juice boxes anymore? I used to get one packed into my lunch every day as a kid. Those had like 110% of your recommended daily dose. Not to mention my house ALWAYS having oranges laying around year round... - vault, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4I think they saw their own parents eating garbage and feeding their kids garbage, so they think that's what you do.
You can't just 'opt out' of eating fruit/vegetables and expect good results for any length of time. - BossKey, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4"What are our children eating these days?"
Have you ever seen a piece of fruit in a Big Mac, Hot Pocket, or teriyaki take-out?
Millions of people eat almost nothing but meat and starch and sugar. - inactive, on 11/07/2009, -1/+5I love orange juice.
- isny, on 11/08/2009, -0/+3Pirating Vitamin C? She only had the one big hit, and everybody already has downloaded that.
- Samo89, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3blasted pirate wannabes, they're doing it wrong >_<
- Halleys5th, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3The data as presented:
"2004/05 = 61 cases
2007/08 = 94+ cases"
I wonder what the numbers are for the two intervening years, or for prior years.
Here's a graph of the bigger picture:

And note that these are deaths, not cases of admittance into a hospital. - TyrelVnne, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3This finally explains pirates to me.

We don't have Mountain Dew in the UK, it's a great injustice. - illinest, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2my first impulse was to place the blame with the kids and parents for failing to get enough nutrition, but then i started thinking and i realized that we can blame society instead, and since society is to blame then the most logical solution is to 'fix' society by passing laws requiring people to get enough vitamins.
Once the law is passed we'll have to relax other laws so that we can properly enforce the nutrition standards but that's just what needs to happen right? I mean these people are all victims of a system that doesn't ensure that they get their vitamin C so it's up to us to ram it down their throat.
/s - milkmage, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2apparently so..

Ursula Arens, of the British Dietetic Association, said it was not possible to say how the children were getting scurvy: whether it was from a poor diet, or as a by-product of other diseases such as cancer. - securesystems, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2Scurvy is also quite common among alcoholics. The alcoholic beverages provide most of their calories and are usually vitamin deficient.
- draemalic, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2Fast food nations at their finest.
- DrSnugglebunny, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Yarrrrrr! Scurvy be good fer yar, landlubbers!
- noumuon, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1it's rather atypical for ascorbic acid to be used in candy to make it sour. i would assume citric acid would be far, far more common.
- Apex3, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1It's because the media is glamorizing the disease. Kids just wanna be pirates, that's all
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH75EGFeHZI - charlietuna, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2Keep drinking that Brawndo! We all know fruit juice is for pussies.
- vault, on 11/08/2009, -2/+3Lot of people just give their kids "orange drink" instead of juice...

"Ain't no vitamins in that *****" - LongLiveRock2, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1For some reason, I feel like singing that song Pink sung in the Spongebob anniversary special!
- Kronos6948, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2You're right...I could've sworn that ascorbic acid was the sour causing flavorant. Time to brush up on my nutrition...it HAS been over a year since my certification expired.
- AiR1890, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2I never really knew what scurvy did to you, then I google imaged scurvy, ***** disgusting. I eat lots of apples, and drink lots of hi-c fruit punch, so I am good. Man, I need to buy more hi-c fruit punch, that stuff is amazing.
- vagitoe, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1This article was brought to you by The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.
- silverchrysalis, on 11/08/2009, -1/+1a friend of mine hated her stepmom. when her dad & stepmom bought a new boat, my friend went out one night and painted a new name on it: The SS Scurvy Wench
- silverchrysalis, on 11/08/2009, -1/+1because the skanktacular pictures & gossip down the side are interesting?
- JasonCox, on 11/07/2009, -4/+2Scurvy you say?
[insert_pirate_joke_here] - Konwashere, on 11/08/2009, -5/+1
And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives
Where we're gonna be when we turn 25
I keep thinking times will never change
Keep on thinking things will always be the same
But when we leave this year we won't be coming back
No more hanging out cause we're on a different track
And if you got something that you need to say
You better say it right now cause you don't have another day
Cause we're moving on and we can't slow down
These memories are playing like a film without sound
And I keep thinking of that night in June
I didn't know much of love
But it came too soon
And there was me and you
And then we got real blue
Stay at home talking on the telephone
And we would get so excitedand we'd get so scared
Laughing at ourselves thinking life's not fair
And this is how it feels
[1]
As we go on
We remember
All the times we
Had together
And as our lives change
From whatever
We will still be
Friends Forever
So if we get the big jobs
And we make the big money
When we look back now
Will our jokes still be funny?
Will we still remember everything we learned in school?
Still be trying to break every single rule
Will little brainy Bobby be the stockbroker man?
Can Heather find a job that won't interfere with her tan?
I keep, keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking it's a time to fly
And this is how it feels
[Repeat 1]
La, la, la, la:
Yeah, yeah, yeah
La, la, la, la:
We will still be friends forever
Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now?
Can we survive it out there?
Can we make it somehow?
I guess I thought that this would never end
And suddenly it's like we're women and men
Will the past be a shadow that will follow us 'round?
Will these memories fade when I leave this town
I keep, keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking it's a time to fly
[Repeat 1 (3x)]
Vitamin C rocks.
