"Researchers have pinpointed the gene that governs the production of tooth ENAMEL"
That's great, but what about the rest of the tooth (nerves, pulp, dentin, roots that connect to the jawbone)? Does this gene govern their production too? This is fine if you just want to recoat an existing tooth with new enamel, but its hardly a way to grow new TEETH as advertised in the threadline.
Silly me, I just noticed this is a Daily Fail article ... - farfromsubtl, on 02/24/2009, -6/+93Daily Mail! Kill it with fire!
- iamrussell, on 02/24/2009, -6/+58the british rejoice!
- franklymister, on 02/24/2009, -1/+36So I could skip the braces and just get the bad teeth knocked out and regrown?
- jakash, on 02/24/2009, -0/+25Better sources of this story here (just because reading science from the DailyMail is ridiculous):

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/sc ... - Rogor, on 02/24/2009, -0/+24Id like to think they could grow giant slabs of teeth out of a metal agar tray and some stem cells, i remember seeing a documentary about how awesome a massive piece of mouse tooth material would be. Of course im probably way off but anyway .. go scientists.
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -2/+25This is great news for the British and people in Alabama.
- deadmoo, on 02/24/2009, -1/+15Finally we can be like sharks.
- sean2390, on 02/24/2009, -0/+14Get your Molotovs here!
- jakash, on 02/24/2009, -0/+14The Daily Mail sucks as a news source for most things other than celebrity gossip - it is especially bad for science articles like this! Why does it keep getting to the front page?!
- DirectTulip, on 02/24/2009, -2/+13This is absolutely great!
- demonio, on 02/24/2009, -1/+12better than perfect?
if its perfect how can it be better?
something must have not been so perfect to begin with no? - demonio, on 02/24/2009, -0/+10omg what is that thing
- theaceoffire, on 02/24/2009, -0/+10Wow, that sounds awesome... Lots of pain now, to avoid lots of pain spread over time...
^_^ If they got this cheap and reliable, I can imagine lots of people who would love perfect (Or better than perfect) teeth... - AndrewMoyer, on 02/24/2009, -1/+9They've been experimenting with genetic engineering all along... the old fashioned way.
- punkcat, on 02/24/2009, -3/+11"a lot" is two words

- gurudrew, on 02/24/2009, -0/+6"Some groups are already having success growing the inner portions of teeth in laboratory animal experiments, but those teeth have no hard coatings – the scientists lacked the genetic material that makes enamel."
"A lot of work would still be needed to bring this to human applications, but it should work," Kioussi said. "It could be really cool, a whole new approach to dental health."
Thanks go to Jakash for posting the link below.

- MarksFriggin, on 02/24/2009, -0/+6I don't believe one thing that dailymail.co.uk posts. ***** off. Buried.
- Ttech2, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5In later news: People start developing multiple rows of teeth!
- Nidy1, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5TANK!
- xsecretfiles, on 02/24/2009, -1/+6I think this would be excellent news for old people.
:) - username7410, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5Sigh, another exciting headline made less exciting when I see it's from Dailymail.
- the2989, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5We need to do something about it. This topic title is a complete lie.
- waydee, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5It's been shown before that sites can pay to get their stories frontpaged on digg, that's my theory especially the average reader of the Daily Mail certainly isn't the sort to get involved in a site like this.
It's a right wing rag for middle england conservatives. - drunkenoaf, on 02/24/2009, -1/+5Robots, or Daily Mail readers really like Digg?
Seriously, I think it's because they make the effort to write headlines on Digg submissions that attract clicks. Whether the story is agenda-ridden ***** or not is a different matter. - Oea420, on 02/24/2009, -0/+4Your wisdom teeth are there to replace teeth you were supposed to lose, but those evil dentists fooled with nature.
burn them at teh stake!
But no, really... Teeth is like the last thing science has to conquer... come on.. we have to brush them twice a day, and sometimes still rot out of our head!
Intelligent design; HAH! - mojoel, on 02/24/2009, -0/+4Vagina dentata.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780622/ - nadalbg, on 02/24/2009, -1/+5Good news for those that are into boxing
- nemrel, on 02/24/2009, -1/+5BURN THE WITCH!!!!!!!
- RaulMuadDib, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3Adamantium Teeth
- h0dges, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3But what is new news today is that ENAMEL can be grown as the genes that control the proteins that secrete enamel has been discovered.
TED were only talking about growing the 'body' of the tooth, not the enamel coating. - r0ji, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3Ah, frick.
- gametavern, on 02/24/2009, -2/+5I was waiting for this to happen *cracks open 24 pack of Mt. Dew*
- spike85, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3It's those mouse teeth companies that'll get us out of this recession
- TheDreadDiggerD, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3Ha ha, Mountain Dew.
- zip000, on 02/24/2009, -1/+4And at best, you'd probably still have to get braces on your new teeth anyway.
- phqu88, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3or hookers!
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3Dr Nick: Hi everybody!
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+4Bah! I am waiting for the 3-adamantium-claws growing gene.
- Sniper, on 02/24/2009, -1/+3...and hockey players.
- shotgunefx, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2Well I believe about 2 or 3 years ago they were already growing teeth. I'm going to guess it's taken longer than expected considering they were talking about "a few years". I believe the problem they had was that the enamel wasn't hard enough. Maybe this will be the Chocolate to the Peanut Butter
- TBombadil, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2now do it with hair, kthanx
- Oea420, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Hell.. they grow in tumors sometimes..
"Today we learned about teratomas which are a form of tumor (benign in women, malignant in men) that form commonly from the gonads. Because of their origin, teratomas contain tissues from all three cell layers (this means they can contain any type of bodily tissues). Teratomas will often contain lots of skin, hair, nerves, and even teeth, as the image below demonstrates."
PIC IS FREAKING NASTY, THIS IS YOUR WARNING

Sorry, I have a cold. - MouserUK, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2Because a lot of the submissions are paid so that they can drive traffic to their website and get ad revenue.
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+3I want metal teeth that can eat people. so when i become a zombie, i will be the last zombie boss.
