- Nocterminus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32next they will make a chicken with 100 wings that grows it's own buffalo sauce
- Ninnux, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24It is so frustrating to hear people say they are sickened by "this kind of science, " and yet are OK with pure-bred pets (genetically inbred), bananas (genetically inbred clones), Calico cats (genetic chimerics), seedless grapes (or any fruit for that matter)(genetic inbred clones). Most of the food we eat is GM'd. So what? Many canned and package food we eat is also irradiated. Mutations don't hurt what's already dead, just what's alive and that's the point.
I mean...come on guys. At the molecular level, its all about tiny machines making proteins and enzymes. Hell, Descartes was saying that in the 16th century. We'd be forty years behind in understanding the genetic basis of disease, viral pathology, mutational analysis, and a host of other biomedical advancements that you and I benefit from every day if we didn't have bacteria making huge copies of human genes under laboratory conditions. Are bacteria making human genes and proteins unethical or gross? We use viruses to infect cells all the time to silence genes or introduce genes or engineer mutations. Is that unethical or gross? Jesus Christ, this irritates the ***** out of me.... - datagod, on 10/11/2007, -4/+26I for one welcome my 99% human, 1% goat hybrid overlord who will not only phase your basket ball in and out of existence, he will travel back in time to prevent you from throwing it.
- FeartheKnighted, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19everyone else of the human race already has "cool abilities", its called thinking.
- SomaSynth, on 10/11/2007, -8/+20I want my kid to pop out with the trajectory calculations of your kid's basketball.
- wbreim, on 10/11/2007, -8/+18sounds good to me
- FortyCaliber, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Some customary Diggisms I HAVEN'T seen in this thread yet...
"I, for one, welcome our new Cybrid overlords." [[[ Datagod... sort of got it first]]]
let's not forget about...
"im in ur genes, hybridizing ur embryos"
and, of course...
"I'd hit it."
I don't know if this should be dugg up or down? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12half gas half electric? whats the mileage?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11This is dumb. 0.1 percent goat is still human. Our genome is like 12% virus junk as it is.
- rnwen2750, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10So do your toenails and your hair and every other (mostly) cell in your body. By what you said, it would be wrong to cut them.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11apparently this special ability has been revoked.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Saying an embryo's 99.9% human and .1% animal is like saying some apple is 99.9% apple and .1 percent fruit, or that a shirt is 99% cotton and 1% fabric.
I hate to be pedantic, but WE'RE ***** ANIMALS TOO. I can't stand when people make artificial distinctions between us and our differently evolved brethren. - draebor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Headline says 'scientists allowed..." and byline says "scientists are seeking permission..."
That's a bit of a difference, don't you think? - fantasmacanino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I can see how you could get confused.
Not. - airmann90, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Most intelligent and insightful post this article has to offer...
- rnwen2750, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7How about a chocolate milkshake producing cow?
- RiverBelow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Not everyone can think, unfortunately.
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Can you say slippery slope?
- Detritus, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10It must be terribly difficult dieing for the sins of man, I don't know how you find the time.
If you ever get tired of feeling sickened and saddened by the modern world you might enjoy some Buddhism or Yoga. Both of these will help you better cope with the subjective nature of existance and the explain why it isn't in your best interests to feel sad and sick ever, least of all over a trivial bit of information that has no affect on your life. Bonus: Neither advocate ignorance! - HayString, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@ FortyCaliber,
but will it blend? - Rayor, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6What would that be? Soylent Green Light?
- verstohlen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Dr. Moreau will be most pleased by this new development.
- FortyCaliber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Crap... I forgot the numerous SNL Jim Brewer Goat-Boy MTV VJ jokes...
/hang head in shame - Caleb666, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7It's a shame that they can't experiment on fully human embryos.
Too bad we have too many ignorant people that think that a bunch of cells is a "human being". - McoreD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is awesome. I am bored with humans.
- malcam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was just thinking that... the media always seems to separate humans from other types of animals, like it's some sort of superiority complex. We are all animals and saying otherwise just sounds silly.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Brown cows already exist.
- wtfersk8s, on 10/11/2007, -10/+12Bout time we start messing with this *****. I want my kid to pop out dunking a basketball.
- MrPlug, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2if i was one of them and grew up knowing id never get sick, that would reduce alot of stress and be one step closer to living life to the fullest.
- keithwired, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Sorry but humans and chimpanzees share approximatly 99% of their DNA, that 1% or less is what makes the difference between a chimpanzee and a great ape (human). Just take a look at downs syndrome, one extra chromosome out of 23 pairs and you get a dramatic difference in appearence and function.
- dbsanfte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It must be nice having a "holy book" so vague that you can squeeze its Roman-era metaphors to fit whatever agenda you seek to push, even one regarding 21st century technology. Truly the greatest scam ever written.
- sanman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1After the Cybrids got out of control, they became almost impossible to stop:

Damn. Don't you love the ambiguity of the English language? Dugg. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4wings for flying would be cool, but you would have to eat all day long to have enough energy to fly, however, your services would be quite valuable so you could make enough to pay for it.
- SarahC, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Bananas are 50% human DNA!
- AvidMasturbator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ahem. So when can I expect cybrid pr0n? And do cybrids do "favors" ;)?
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@data
It's about time that horizontal gene transfers allow us to have the traits that other animals have developed through natural selection over time. - veriix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Half man, half bear and half pig! ...Nooooo! It's happening again!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1
Anyway, from other critters I'd like the longevity of the tortoise, the vision of a hawk, and the regenerative powers of a salamander Being able to change skin colors like a cuttlefish would also be very cool, oh and flying, can't leave that one out.
- crazybugger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1These things are already in progress. The scientists just want to bring it out to the public. This concept is just a tip of the iceberg.
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I assume they mean a non-human animal. The point is that you can have 99.9% human and .1% another animal's DNA.
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4In all seriousness, I want to hear some ideas on what realistic genetic traits would be good for us to have from other animals. I would like to see a higher ability to regenerate, heal, I'm sure theres a gene that could enhance that.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I owe Bush an apology for all those "human-animal hybrid" cracks.
- lovecups, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I am just having images of everyone looking like an anime character in the future...and I'm not sure if I like it.
- AnthonyRyan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0http://duggmirror.com
- yow1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I am sickened by "this kind of science" that has perverted bananas and seedless grapes (which can no longer reproduce naturally).
'Tis abomination!
< /s > - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Nto defending those opposed to stem-cell research, but what do you suppose adult humans are? Are we not a "bunch of cells"? We are, but we are very well organized, and are composed of many more cells than the embryos that are experimented on (those are in what, the morula, blastula, or neurula, stages?). Philosophers can decide when order is sufficient enough for one to be declared human; many would say it comes at the point when we are born.
- socialidiocy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Did we learn nothing from Jurassic Park? I know they aren't inserting 'missing DNA', but I wonder what the stability of the tissues will be. Also, why aren't they using another animal for the production process that is closer in genetic relationship to humans?
