- drakes66, on 03/10/2009, -1/+6Incredible tool, although this technology already exists its caled ECMO, they use it during bypass surgeries when they need to stop the heart, and oxigenate the blood. But getting this out of the surgery room, and into people's pockets or handbags is a great way to reduce strain on peoples lives! I can't wait for this to become reality for people who need it! :)
- j01101010, on 03/10/2009, -1/+5My lungs are already portable.
- scoot3r, on 03/10/2009, -2/+5pack of smokes in one pocket, portable lung in the other
- SmokenJoe, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3They gave no information on how they would get around the platelet and red blood cell eating problems of devices like that. It doesn't take a genius to figure out an air exchange device making one that doesnt require constant transfusions is another matter entirely.
Google CRRT and artificial heart problems if you want the full info. - inactive, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3This is a nice invention.
- CrimsonBlur, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3Why concentrate on one solution when you can have many? The things you are talking about will take much longer to develop, test, and perfect than it will take to create a machine to do the same thing.
There is not really a lack of funding or personnel working on biotechnology. The thing is it just takes time to make major breakthroughs in R&D in that field. Eventually biotech will be viable, but for now technologies like this are needed to bridge the gap. - JDRay, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2I'm probably late to the party noticing this little tidbit, but the volume control on the BBC embedded media player goes to eleven.
- reeds1999, on 03/10/2009, -1/+2How is this possible??? It is being developed in the UK and they have

- ITdude472, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1Awesome, it will be well perfected by the time my lungs fail from the cigarettes.
- IsraGeek, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1This sounds like a great invention that will be useful to many people and will significantly improve their lives. Thanks for sharing this.
- thinkb4utype, on 03/10/2009, -1/+1If you have been the victim of the artificial lung, you may be eligible for a cash settlement. Call the law firm of Cheatum, Beatum, and How for a free consultation. Don't let this opportunity pass. Call now.
- physixx, on 03/10/2009, -2/+2Excellent life-saving invention, yet I feel its research money may be better spent elsewhere.
Biotech promises to grow any kind of tissues based on your own DNA and organ transplants native to your body. It makes more sense to focus resources on making that (and nanotech) happen instead of mechanical substitutes like this. Of course, until we get to that point the portable lung certaintly will do the job. - Amadeus2490, on 03/10/2009, -1/+1I'm just concerned if this is safe in the long term, if your body would reject it etc. I already know it'd cost millions of dollars, so i'm not even worried about how much it costs.
