- GafferXL, on 01/08/2009, -4/+20Phoenix, what on earth does salmonella have to do with American Hygiene? Half the time it comes from a foreign source, or a packaging plant.
- jayb1rd, on 01/08/2009, -3/+17Nothing unusual here with the poor standards of spelling that apparently exist wherever you are from.
- macmcraeart, on 01/08/2009, -0/+11a true free market leads to the "Jungle". you should try reading it. it might help you understand the errors in your reason.
- noupsell, on 01/07/2009, -3/+14did they all eat at McDonalds?
- krnelson, on 01/08/2009, -1/+9"Salmonella-contaminated dry pet food sickened at least 79 people, including many young children, in October and November."
I like how they end with this comment. No attempts at explaining this case... - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8I wouldn't really call washing your hands /better/ than cooking it, because...well...it doesn't really matter how much you wash your hands if you're eating raw.
- honeybrass, on 01/08/2009, -1/+9Nothing grows on McDonalds "food"
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8Don't know why you got modded down, it's a fact. The US has strict laws and controls for internally produced meats, fruits and vegetables. For some reason the FDA vanishes when it comes to imports from Mexico, South America and other countries.
It may be cheaper to import veggies from other countries, but they don't have the same regulations we do, which leads to outbreaks like this. Remember the tomato problem last year, or the broccoli problem, or the spinach problem? All imports. Isn't globalization great? - Benjigga, on 01/08/2009, -2/+9http://i34.tinypic.com/2cesq4k.jpg
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6A pure free market would greatly increase things such as this, and I don't understand how you think otherwise.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7Also, I forgot to mention that there's less than 5 cases of TB per 100,000 people in the US, so what the hell is the point in testing all food workers for it?
Might as well test all food workers for the plague while we're at it, it's not like it costs money or anything. - ChromaVita, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7That's true, but that doesn't mean I want to eat a carrot out of a guy's butt.
- darlingt, on 01/08/2009, -5/+10It would help if we'd start growing more of our own food here in the US and quit importing all this crap from overseas.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+7American food hygiene isn't the best, I'll give you that. A higher percentage of Americans get foodborne ilnesses per year than in some other first world countries, but to imply that we're worse off than third world countries is laughable.
Not to mention that salmonella isn't very related to American hygiene, as GafferXL pointed out.

- vulpescry, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5I believe you meant *so
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+7Anyone read Fast Food Nation?
There is ***** in the Meat.
Incidentally, I laughed out loud at the cretin who insisted this happened because of "Liberal beauracracy". Try again, dimbulb! - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6origin of the outbreak
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E8DijVSQgI - EpicSelekta, on 01/08/2009, -2/+6Hey, guess what... all the vegetables you eat were grown in *****!
- 0260, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5It was probably organic food, actually.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3A-one, a-two, a-three, *chomp*. 3.
- m0llusk, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3That wasn't chicken.
- Betrayer, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Why dont Grocery stores use "Club card" contact info to warn people that they may have purchased tainted foods?
How long does it take someone to get sick; identify possible causes; identify the exact food source and the FDA hitting the recall button? wouldnt most of the food be distributed and consumed by then? - ChromaVita, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2If you ask me, the only acceptable way to get salmonella is eating raw cookie dough. They say you can get it from that, but I'll be damned if that'll stop me.
- macmcraeart, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2heheheh how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop?
- ChromaVita, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Thank god. I'll be back later. I'm gonna go celebrate.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3McDonalds - i'm loving it
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2The trick is staying hydrated and controlling the fever. That's twice as hard to do in the woods, your case must have been mild.
- thestereofield, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2that raw egg b.s. has such a low chance of occurring...people have been eating raw eggs for thousands of years
- Claverhouse, on 01/08/2009, -1/+3Well, it works this way:
no meddling, prying liberal government bureaucracies;
companies set their own standards;
the weaker customers die;
companies lose business;
sales of coffins and medicine go through the roof;
companies go bankrupt and reform as new companies and set higher standards for themselves;
customers pay higher prices and complain;
new companies take advantage of the demand and cut costs, using even cheaper labour;
customers get sick; companies get rich; lawyers make a killing. - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+4Hmmm, was I supposed to wash the chicken before cooking, or lick it.....Better do both. Can't be too careful.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2It seems like it's always Chinese food that gets everyone I know sick.
- Betrayer, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2love the part where he takes his gooey hands and prepares the lettuce on the cutting board.
- honeybrass, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2Italian female salmon
- temujin2012, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3Avoid salmonella, do not touch a turtle with your penis.
- Rikkochet, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3American hygiene is a loaded term. Are you talking about personal hygiene or the hygiene of the food growers and packers?
The former is irrelevant - having smelly armpits doesn't have anything to do with food borne illnesses.
The latter... Well.. Enough investigative journalists have leaked interesting tidbits to make that possibly hold some water. But worst than other parts of the world? I doubt anyone's really looked into that exhaustively.
If I want an American straw man, I'll blame all the antibacterial EVERYTHING that pervades American life. This generation is growing up in a germ-free bubble and it isn't taking much to make people sick. - josepablos, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1YEA.. "so" Epic Fail to me :(
- Teachum, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1What are we paying I.C.E. for? They still can't corral the Illegals squatting and taking a dump on the floor of our food processing plants. Believe me, this is cause! At least give the Illegals health checks and teach them how to use bathrooms, or your profits will go up in lawsuits!!
- atobkindaurl, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1If you are concerned with food safety EDUCATE YOURSELF... Do you know about this legislation that will impact your food? HR 875
- EpicSelekta, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3Eggs, cheese, and poultry are all considered sources of salmonella according to this article.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who was relieved to not see beer on that list. - Tkuebrich, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2Salmonella isn't that terrible, and it's very survivable too, considering I went through it in the middle of the woods and didn't die.
- docturpeppur, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1This is another sign of the pussification of America. Rough it with some pepto and gatorade.
- shaunhey, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1Interesting -- I thought it was the double salsa on my Chipotle chicken burrito bowl that turned it into drain-o...
- qwertycopter, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1Damn, and I thought I was just unlucky for getting food poisoning this past weekend. I ate chicken at a Chinese restaurant.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3I agree, America ***** sucks.
- Tkuebrich, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1Im not sure what mild versus a bad case would be like. All I know is I defiled that forest with bodily excrement.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1I'm not sure how true this is, but I saw a chef on Good Morning America over the summer say that you can't get salmonella from the raw egg, that it comes from shell, so as long as you wash your hands and don't eat any raw egg that had pieces of the shell fall into it, you'll be okay.
- sockpuppets, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1The odds of eating a raw egg with salmonella is about 1 in 10,000. I use raw eggs in Caesar salad all the time, it's never made me ill.
- jshhmr, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1Here we go again! You can't drink the water in Mexico without getting sick but we can get crops from Mexico that uses the same water for irrigation? Also, since there are no bathrooms available on these farms, the workers urinate and deficate on the crops that we eat. This even happens on farms in America with the illegal migrant workers. No wonder we are getting sick!
- sockpuppets, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1You're right, the last strain I bumped into was a bart cop.
