Researchers Map the Sexual Network of an Entire High School (PIC)

      High school guys are also probably more honest about how many people they've slept with than girls are, just based on gender behaviours.

Being a nervous highschooler myself, I wouldn't mind saying "I have had relationships with person A and B but not C, even though I tell people I did, in the past 18 months" as long as it stays anonymous. On top of that, the people doing the study would probably have needed confirmation from both sides to register the relationship in their results.

      I'm not really sure what I should say about your point on same-sex relationships. Anonymity is a powerful thing and don't doubt the openness of gays and lesbians. That given, we don't really know how the results were collected and I could be completely off-axis.

      I guess what it all boils down to is an interesting exercise and a cool picture.

Estimation is that 3-5% of all nonsingle high school students still are virgins at time of graduation. counting for 25% of all students. Assuming 1 in 5 are single at any given time.

    Somebody on here pointed out that there have been sluts on here that sleep with more than one guy. And I also saw guys with more than one girl.

    I bet it's a 14 year old freshman girl hooking up with more than two 19 year old senior men.

    Plus what's with the clique on top? Is there like 30 people in it?????? 30 people in bed at once------that would break the bed. lol :)

      that means in the period those 63 pairs were exclusive the entire study... but it would make having "single" dots more meaningful. It would also be more correct if it showed the interaction over time. The "V" shapes would have been a couple with one breakup to another single partner.

      You get the "loop" from interactions over time... boy and girl... breakup... 6 months later a different boy and girl that were linked to one before. Often in a serial relationship...

      Really, though without Timeframe data it's not interesting to computer/networking geeks. While it shows who was connected to who and how they are many interconnections, it doesn't show the time data... how groups change, how age changes the relationships, how single members are pulled into the group and pairs seperate.

      The study says at the top gives the title: "The Structure of Romantic and Sexual Relations at Jefferson High", meaning that they are looking at both Romantic relations as well as Sexual ones, meaning that virgins holding hands counts, perhaps as a portion of the 63 "normal" relationships or the girls with 3-6 connections made, showing a pattern of who they have dated over a period of time.

      mabhatter pretty much pointed that out already, but I wanted to add some emphasis to it.

      As for your math, I really have to laugh in your face.

      By your assumption, 80% of high school students are "nonsingle" (whatever that would mean, given how relationships in high school tend to be about as fickle as they come)

      How the hell does 3-5% of that 80% equal 25% of the total? And what about the original 20% you left out for being single?

      Allow me to assume you meant 30-50% of the "nonsingle" 80% are virgins by graduation. All of a sudden the math kind of works
      (0.80 * 0.30 = 0.24; 0.80 * 0.50 = 0.40; range 24-40% of "nonsingles" are virgins)
      but you're still leaving out the single 20%, some of which would obviously be virgins, more out of happenstance than choice as it were (although when it comes down to it, refusing to change your station in life is in fact a choice)

      Cite your sources before to start throwing out stats, and read the title of a research study before you start blasting it. How's the weather up there on your high horse anyways?

      oh and btw, there's a hell of a lot more than 30 people in that circle at the top, more like the vast majority of the dating scene at the high school. Statistically speaking if you're willing to put yourself out there, you're not necessarily going to end up with the first girl who says yes (to a date).
