- YojanV, on 06/09/2009, -3/+25My PhD research isn't working. I'm going to sleep until it does, dammit.
- RichStevenson, on 06/09/2009, -0/+14This is absolutely true. There have been numerous times that I've gone to bed thinking about a problem and have awoke with solution in hand.
- t1n0m3n, on 06/09/2009, -1/+12"have awoke with solution in hand."
That is called "Nocturnal Emissions" - NOFXY, on 06/09/2009, -0/+10In high school I was assigned a really difficult (at the time) math problem. Next morning I woke up and had the answer. I somehow managed to solve it in my sleep. I guess I should talk things over with my pillow more often.
- ScottMcIntyre, on 06/09/2009, -0/+10How does someone become a volunteer on these kind of studies? It'd be great to sleep in the name of advancing scientific knowledge- and maybe get paid! :-)
- majordanger, on 06/09/2009, -1/+10I'm gonna forward this article to my boss right after my nap.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
- Hellahulla, on 06/09/2009, -0/+5Confucius says:-
"Boy who go to bed with sex problem on mind, wake up with solution in hand."
I remember first seeing that in some dumb mIRC script quotes section. - Feckinmik, on 06/09/2009, -1/+6Had a boss who completely believed in this and encouraged short naps. Too bad they fired us both for sleeping on the job...
- whipnet, on 06/09/2009, -0/+5I have saved my job in IT more than once by solving things in my sleep.
Totally with you man.
* - inactive, on 06/09/2009, -0/+4So if I understand you correctly, you are going to sleep on the problem of you not getting enough sleep?
- kvgirard, on 06/09/2009, -2/+6this is why i decided to sleep in an extra two hours instead of studying for my finals
- uptwolait, on 06/09/2009, -0/+4It has also been shown that alcohol interferes with REM sleep. Maybe that explains my low GPA in college.
- Ebacherville, on 06/09/2009, -0/+4your brain actually does lots of stuff while sleeping , it rehearses what you have learned ect. during the day and processes it.
- Redline500, on 06/09/2009, -0/+4I read an article a little while ago that compared your dreams, and especially your nightmares, to the Danger Room from X-Men. Your nightmares allow you to safely simulate dangerous situations so that you are able to better react in the real world. That changed the way I think of dreaming forever.
- askantik, on 06/09/2009, -0/+4I don't know how often sleep solves problems for me, but when I have a real problem (like something pissing me off), sleeping sure seems to help.
- zakool21, on 06/09/2009, -2/+5Dear fellow Diggers, if you go to sleep, you will not get laid. Sincerely, the internet.
- m3arvk, on 06/09/2009, -2/+5This is why I always strive to get 12+ hours a day.
- libbb, on 06/09/2009, -0/+3Another file under, NO *****
- FlashDriveDT, on 06/11/2009, -0/+2I woke up this morning and my first thought was "Check digg". Kidding aside, the most ingenious moments that occur to me when waking up are known songs playing in my head. The lyrics always seem to fit what's coming to me that day or hand me a solution to a previous day. I love it!
- randomdude287, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2if only i could sleep ten hours a day. during the school year, its really hard for me to even get close to 7 hours. oh well, its summer now and i can get more sleep. it really solves all my problems.
- borez, on 06/09/2009, -0/+2Take your pick:

* - buckrogers1965, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2I have solved some very complicated computer problems by letting my subconscious work on the problem. I try to spend an hour or so a day on the problem, learning about it, thinking of different solutions, and then think of the problem just before I goto sleep so that as I drift off to sleep I am visualizing the problem.
You should also sleep on any big decisions in your life. Relationships, finance, career. Don't decide on anything until you have slept on the problem. - MrMayBeBanned, on 06/09/2009, -0/+2I once designed a logo while asleep and drew it the next day. I've also written songs in my dreams and remembered them when I woke up.
- maz2331, on 06/09/2009, -0/+2It's very difficult to actually concentrate when tired. Short-term memory needs time to be committed to long-term, and the buffers aren't infinite. Sleep is effectively the brain's flush() call.
- Wingin, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2This has happened to me too.
The time I was most surprised by it, was when a friend was describing something to me which she didn't know the name of, and I tried hard to visualize it but could not recall ever seeing it, thinking about it or knowing it existed. I woke up in the middle of the night knowing the scientific name for it, and looked it up in a book I'd often read - sure it enough that was it. I wasn't aware of ever paying attention to the illustration and label because it hadn't ever interested me. Sometimes weird stuff happens when you're asleep. - mikebrinkman, on 06/09/2009, -1/+2If that's the case, I should be one of the best problem solvers in the world!
- padu19, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1good one!!
- Rudegar, on 06/09/2009, -1/+2hhhmmm maybe this is just what the middle-east needs! :P
- KrayzieKyd, on 06/09/2009, -1/+2My problem is that I can't sleep.
- tgc1, on 06/09/2009, -2/+3So when my family bitches me out for sleeping I can now tell them i'm problem solving.

To: boss
Subject: See ... I told you it would be proven beneficial.
Body: Hey boss, this is exactly what I was talking about. I'll be back in an hour or so. - TheXuu, on 06/09/2009, -1/+2* I just wanna get high and feel good about myself.
- ajsmth, on 06/09/2009, -2/+3Can it play Crysis?
- MicroBerto, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Anyone ever try supplementing melatonin? It's cheap and looks like lots of cool studies show it's pretty effective and safe if used right:
http://www.priceplow.com/melatonin/benefits - Pifflebunk, on 06/09/2009, -1/+2Great, so people like me who have insomnia are screwed
- buckrogers1965, on 06/10/2009, -0/+1Flush, defrag and index.
- pointlessjon, on 06/09/2009, -1/+2If you don't have time to actually sleep, you can always just do some dimethyltryptamine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimethyltryptamine - digghasnoethics, on 06/09/2009, -1/+2Yes, but so does alcohol.
Somehow we never seem to see research papers promoting that. - FlashDriveDT, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1When you're stressed try to visualize something peaceful or listen to soothing music. Just relaxing can already help the brain (and body).
- askantik, on 06/09/2009, -1/+2Sounds like your boss was Michael Scott.
- FlashDriveDT, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1I bet it also dminishes it when the TV is left running.
- FlashDriveDT, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1Confucius say: “Man who go to bed with itchy bum wake up with smelly finger.”
- HulkLogan, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1I'm not really sure why this is being broke as a new revalation? This is pretty standard.
During the time we are awake, we think in our conscious minds. However, during sleep we enter our subconscious mind, which is where most of our experiences are stored. We process so many thoughts every day it is impossible for our conscious mind to focus on the present, and, remember every experience at the same time.
Many folk who use meditation before bed(myself included) have been doing this for years and years. You aknowledge your problem and ask your subconscious(intuition) mind to provide solutions for you. The key is that you must believe your mind is going to do this for you. Otherwise your limiting belief will not allow you to be open or aware enough to recieve the answers you seek. - diggbookmarking, on 06/11/2009, -1/+1I wanna want to sleep 10 hrs a day without 7 !!!!!!!!!
