- belfastbiker, on 08/25/2008, -5/+60EIGHT HOURS?
I rise at 6:30, so that means I need to realistically go to bed at 10:00 - I get home at 6:30, so that's less than 4 hours per day, all to myself?
I'll take the sleep deprivation. - seltaeb4, on 08/25/2008, -3/+28Sleep is NOT a sign of weakness, or lack of character... it's a sign of intelligence.
Don't you hate it when people actively boast about how little sleep they get, and also how early they get up in the morning, as if it were some badge of honor?
Sick, sick people. - mwalker05, on 08/25/2008, -1/+25Maybe if we could lighten up in America and end the work day at 2:00 in the afternoon, or start it at 11:00 in the morning. I don't know about you guys, but I could easily be just as productive with a 3 hour shorter day. Work just doesn't get done when you literally have all day to do it.
- suckanucka, on 08/25/2008, -2/+21If you sleep 8 hours, the terrorists have already won.
- hsinray, on 08/25/2008, -0/+16Now, if someone, including your boss want you to sleep less and work more... tell them it doesn't work that way. adequate 8 hour sleep gives the best productivity!
- Br3ach, on 08/25/2008, -0/+16I know these truths all to well, as a long sufferer of sleep depravation.
Eventually you just become a husk of yourself, irritated and depressed. Each day blurs into the next. My longest stint was 3 straight days, by the end of that I was ready to rip someone's head off. You dont even know who you are anymore. - OrangeTide, on 08/25/2008, -1/+16you assume reason and logic works on managers.
- deltron, on 08/25/2008, -1/+14what's sleep?
- CosmicJustice, on 08/25/2008, -1/+13No, you've discovered how sensitive YOU can be to caffeine.
- Plastic3D, on 08/25/2008, -2/+14I've recently discovered how sensitive one can be to caffeine. No coffee or tea after 5:30PM, and all has been well since!!
- AmyVernon, on 08/25/2008, -1/+12yeah, 'cuz that'll work.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+12I have sleep apnea, so I know bad sleep isn't good for you. :-)
- Andrwmorph, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11Nail on the head.
- AngryAngryBrian, on 08/25/2008, -1/+11A number of workers have voiced their concern over overtime and sleep. Because of health concerns the company is now mandating that all employees must get at least 56 hours of sleep each week. You will notice the comfortable sleep detector we have installed in your colon. If you do not meet the sleep quota you will be required to attend two hours of sleep counsellings every day until the problem is resolved. If your SIN (Sleep Improvement Number) doesn't improve after two weeks you will be required to increase counseling to 3 hours per day. All Counseling must be done before or after the company work day and cannot interfere with required overtime.
-Management - Nightfall, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9I am convinced that sleep needs vary from one person to another. My wife has sleep apnea and requires a cpap machine to sleep efficiently. She now sleeps at least 8 hours per night. If she sleeps less, she naps when she gets home. I am fortunate enough to be able to get away with at least 7 hours and still feel great. Anything less and I am tired the next day. If I get more than 7 and I feeling just that much better.
I have friends who can sleep 4 hours and feel refreshed the next day. I just can't do it. On 4 hours I am a zombie. - username7410, on 08/25/2008, -1/+10Next time I'm having trouble sleeping I'll read this article.
ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... - Andrwmorph, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9When there are 27 hours in each day I'll have enough time to grab 8 hours every night.
- MalarkeyPN, on 08/25/2008, -1/+9Since my girlfriend works irregular hours, for me i often comes down to a choice between sleep and sex. And I gotta confess, sometimes sleep wins.
- poet, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8Everyones sleep cycle is different.
- poet, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7Seriously. People think that studies are covering your situation, when they are just being general. I know that I am not an average person so why would average statistics have any bearing on myself? They don't.
- locke2002, on 08/25/2008, -2/+9Enjoy your heart damage.
- username7410, on 08/25/2008, -1/+7...or; work jsut hard enough to keep your job - lay around on the couch all day being media whore: browsing the internet, watching the TV on mute and listening to music... with periodic video game breaks.
- HillerMylife, on 08/25/2008, -3/+9I've supplanted four of my eight hours of sleep with 12 oz of Red Bull in the morning.
- SLockhart, on 08/25/2008, -2/+8Yeah, there's really no point to living beyond 40 anyway.
- connieLingus, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6ever since i ran out of xanax sleeping has been a real pain.
- username7410, on 08/25/2008, -1/+6A natural and periodic state of rest during which consciousness of the world is suspended.
- poet, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5I have clinically diagnosed insomnia for which I refuse to take the prescribed medication because it makes me feel like a paralytic.
My sleep can range, from 2-3 hours per session and 2-3 sessions a night. With that in mind, I'm the only person I know that can actually remember specific visual-auditory items well after they have happened or have lost relative significance--sometimes things that have happened years ago that I can still remember where things were in rooms and who said what--whilst quoting them.
Everyone is different. - OrangeTide, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4I could use a nap about now.
- winmywii, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4For the record I wasn't bragging, I was complaining. But the jobs pays decent.
- dafragsta, on 08/25/2008, -1/+5poet didn't get the memo.
- MizSwann, on 08/26/2008, -0/+4Awww *****! My MANAGER is on Digg ?! I quit, man...I freakin' quit!
- poet, on 08/25/2008, -2/+5And in your case, making inane comments of your own activities thinking everyone else is just like you.
- poet, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4But when you get paid by the hour the more hours you work the more you get paid. Wherein lies the problem of our consumerist society.
- SyphonHawk, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4agreed 8 hours would be nice, but is unrealistic, especially with a job and school.
- ryan850, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4Latest studies show 6.5 - 7.5 hours is best.. and a little be more than 7.5 is as bad as a little under 6.5. Although I have to admit I didn't see this study myself but I'm just repeating a news article so it could be horribly skewed..
- twigboy, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3im in the same routine you are
1hr to make food, and possibly eat it
30mins to clean up (do dishes and shower)
1hr to catch up on things happening in the world in terms of news/technology/games/etc
chores or organisation of events never take less than 30minutes
so forget making lunch for the next day or exercising - RabbidBunny, on 08/25/2008, -3/+6Sleep is good but if there is something else to do in bed I will skip some of my 8 hours.
Hell 7:55 will do me great. - Rookie25, on 08/26/2008, -0/+3http://xkcd.com/320/
if my work hours were a bit more flexible i would give the above a shot.... - poet, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3Oh noes! Watch out for the wrath of prepubescent diggers whom will entirely disagree and digg you down because, for them, an act of sexual relation is something they would die for.
- jbmcb, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2France has fully embraced the shortened work week. It hasn't worked out so well.

- zoom1928, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2Four hours is much more than most people I know get. I'm still at work and most of my coworkers are at neary 9PM. It will take me an hour to get home and get ready for bed. That means I've had zero time for myself. That is more normal than your working a mythical cushy 9-5 (plus commuting time and time to get ready for work) corporate job that your example gives.
- jaxsonk, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2Ah, the life.
- AngryAngryBrian, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2No Miss Swann, you are fired! You have violated the corporate W policy. The letter W can only be used three times or more in a row if it applies to an internet URL. Leave your colon sleep detector with the Guard on your way out.
- seltaeb4, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2Oh, I wasn't referring to you specifically (or even generally, as I don't recall your comment.)
It just seems like every time it comes up in conversation with folks, everyone starts trying to one-up each other with stories of fatigue, endurance, and early-rising exploits. - TheBigBad, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2This article is ridiculous. Some of the most brilliant people in history slept four hours per night or less including such names as Winston Churchill, Thomas Edison, Leonardo DaVinci, Nikola Tesla.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+2we did this chapter last week or the week before
- leerayIG88, on 08/25/2008, -1/+2I don't sleep. I am a robot.
- MarshalBanana, on 08/25/2008, -1/+2Just increase the hourly wage.
- JackpotCity, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1Sometimes it takes some rather aggressive restructuring of your day to win back the hours you need for a good nights rest.
I try to get 8 hours, once a week. -
