Er, crap. - johanm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10glass beads are marvelous little things!
they are also useful for:
* buing large islands (like manhattan) from Indians
* making girls show their boobies at spring break - DrDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My hospital is one of the centers which uses these. The radioactivity decays rather rapidly.
"Yttrium 90, a pure beta emitter, decays to stable zirconium 90 with a physical half-life of 64.2 hours (2.67 days). The average energy of the beta emissions from yttrium 90 is 0.9367 MeV."
They never come out. They don't cure cancer though, they can slow it down. They only treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma is surgical resection or transplant. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is great. I'll share this with a class that I'm in right now that's about liver cancer and hepatitis B. The best way to prevent liver cancer is to get tested for hepatitis B as soon as possible. Hepatits B, which causes eighty percent of liver cancer, is mainly transferred from a mother who's unaware that she has the virus. If the newborn is not given treatment within twelve hours of birth, he/she will likely obtain the virus. So even if the three-shot vaccination is given, the virus will still be there, since the vaccine is ineffective. If it's found that one is a chronic carrier of hepatitis B, then regular monitoring of the liver is recommended to catch any cancerous growths.
- wintermd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have prostate Cancer. I am undergoing Proton Radiation at Loma Linda Hospital. 21 done, 23 to go. Its a form of radiation that is as accurate as these beads. They claim a .5cm delivery accuracy for Proton Radiation, and nothing is left in the body when done.
Google "Proton Therapy" if you ever get Cancer. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Love ones of mine have died from this horrible cancer. This news brings hope to me that others won't have to endure the pain that I have.
- chinesedewey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Awesome, so that might help get rid of cancer. But now what is going to happen to the person with radioactive beads inside of them? Isn't glass going to cause problems when it's stuck inside a human body?
- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did you not read the article? The blood vessels feeding the tumor are sort-of blocked off, and the beads are injected right into the tumor- it is pinpointed chemotherapy. The patient's condition is stabilized, so that they can wait much longer for a liver transplant (the only actual cure).
- Wonotch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly what I was wondering. How do they get them out when they're all done?
- rtlampwork, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1I worked at Theragenics Corporation in the late 80's where Therasphere was developed. The glass spheres are doped with Yttrium, then irradiated to get them to emit alpha particles, then administered as described in the article. The half life allowed it to cook the tumor then decay down pretty fast. (Lots of pâté de foie gras jokes.) It was awesome to be part of the development. The company also was developing TheraSeed, which treats prostate cancer. (Earlier comment noted.) TheraSeed approved first, and TheraSphere was pushed to the back, then dropped, so the company could focus on cash flow. I'm glad it's still being worked on - we never had a cure, at least with the protocol we were allowed to work at. We did show a definite palliative effect, and definitely extended expected life span.
- DrDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually there can be (and has been) leakage of a few beads. Causes localized damage where-ever they end up. Not usually life threatening because its only a few beads.
- FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, and at one point they are carried by the bloodstream... Couldn't one travel it's way up to the heart and cause an attack?
- Aligy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anything that's bad for cancer is good for me!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So now I can start drinking again.
- FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2the latter beads are plastic actually.
