- ambion, on 01/13/2009, -8/+73*****. Proteins are composed of amino acids, some of which are essential, meaning our bodies can't synthesize them. Ingested protein is broken down to its amino acid components in the small intestine and absorbed. There are no essential amino acids exclusive to meat. If there were, vegetarians/vegans would be facing serious protein deficiency problems, which they aren't. Vegetarians are able to build muscle just as well as anyone else if they eat enough protein.
The only tricky nutrient in a vegan diet is vitamin B12, which is to my knowledge practically exclusive to animal-based food. Fortunately for them it can be taken as a supplement. Vegetarians who drink milk or eat eggs don't have a problem with it.
Of course, statistically speaking vegetarians tend to stay slim and are seldom heavily built. It could be argued that people who choose to become vegetarians have don't as often have as much intrest in pumping iron etc, choosing less athletic hobbies instead.
I eat meat and would have a hard time giving up steak dinners. Nonetheless I raise my hat to the determination of these kids. They are living healthier lives, striving to be ethical and aren't afraid to step out of the crowd and live by their principles. They are our future. Good job!
and finally... Rocky + eggs = red herring ;) - whorunbartertwn, on 01/13/2009, -8/+58Because vegetarians don't drink coke or eat fries?
- jsm1t, on 01/13/2009, -18/+67I believe your wrong.
In fact, I'd bet on it. - Metalcard, on 01/13/2009, -10/+58It wasn't the animals welfare that made me go vegi, I'll gladly go hunting and kill me some animals, I just don't eat em, my family does though so its not wasted. It was the realization of what the hell I was putting in my self, the flesh of another living thing, is what got to me.
But that's me personally, if you like meat then by all means eat it, who am I to stop you. As I see it, don't bug me about not eating meat and I wont bug you about eating it. - jsm1t, on 01/13/2009, -30/+75Good, more meat for the rest of us.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -15/+51Comments from my five year old daughter....
While looking at a chipmunk "Can we eat it?"
While eating a chicken leg and hearing me use the ward 'swan' in a sentence. "This is swan" as she continues to eat it.
While having a discussion what a badger is "Do they taste good"
While talking about watermelon "This is like the steak of fruit!" She now calls watermelon "fruitsteak".... she even salts it lightly...
While playing Spore with my wife "I like omnivores. I like that I can eat them, mama, am I an omnivore?"
While talking about life and death after seeing a funeral procession. This one came out of left field and I almost wrecked my truck. "Poppa are wolverines like badgers?" Yes honey. "If a wolverine ever attacks me, I'll poke it in the head with a sword, Poppa, can you eat a wolverine?"
I love my daughter. - To0pak, on 01/13/2009, -2/+35If I'm around animal activists or something I'll probably say that it's for animal welfare
but really it's just cause I was fat - tkcom, on 01/13/2009, -20/+53I bet that'll be 0 in 200 thanks to bacon.
- inc595, on 01/13/2009, -4/+3690% of all statistics can be made to say anything… 50% of the time
- JamesBondJr, on 01/12/2009, -12/+42Gotta say, I don't care about the animal welfare aspect, I just prefer to eat more healthily and being a vegetarian isn't that hard. I have a hard time believing that only 1 in 200 are veg. though
- atgmac, on 01/13/2009, -4/+31[citation needed]
I've been a vegetarian all my life and I have no such problems. - palehorse864, on 01/13/2009, -2/+29You don't win friends with salad.
- Wade, on 01/13/2009, -1/+28Did you honestly just sign off as "douche"?
- mithrasinvictus, on 01/13/2009, -1/+23You are confusing vegetarians with vegans.
Vegetarians eat (or drink) eggs. - marklestrange, on 01/13/2009, -6/+28I have no problem (and empathise with) vegetarians, though not one myself - there are many cultures around the world that are vegetarian and have thrived for many hundreds of years.
Bringing up a child as a Vegan (no dairy products eggs etc.) however is a very different proposition.
For the last 12 years a friend has brought their child up this way and he is very small for his age, has some behavioural problems, has recently developed a nut allergy, and has to carry an Epi-pen.
Though this is not a scientific sample of any sort this has reinforced my opinion that this is a very bad idea.
Vegan cultures anyone? - PrismoFillusion, on 01/13/2009, -10/+31On one hand the cruelty that livestock faces day in and day out on most farms is intolerable. They're often forced to live in cramped living space, eat their own *****, and ***** on each other. All this just to be brutally slaughtered to feed people who can reasonably find less obtrusive ways of eating.
On the other hand, damn I love me some bacon! - mithrasinvictus, on 01/13/2009, -0/+21Animals you hunt have probably had a decent life.
Meat you buy in the shop or as fast food has probably had a horrible life in a concrete pen or a cage as it was fed crap including antibiotics and slaughter waste from its predecessors. - TheWhiteOtter, on 01/13/2009, -2/+22In the UK the number of vegetarians in something like 3 or 4 million http://www.vegsoc.org/news/2000/21cv/introduction. ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2007/may/14/foodanddr ... meaning at least 5% and at least double the number of muslims (at 1.5 million http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/special_report/1997/rel ... ) so this is probably a worldwide figure. Also the number of vegetarians has been growing significantly in the last 15 years http://reports.mintel.com/sinatra/reports/index/le ...
Up to you what you want to eat though. - asdfgafawer3, on 01/13/2009, -9/+28What's that have to do with vegetarianism?
- DrVic, on 01/13/2009, -4/+23Our ancestors did not crawl out of the primordial ooze, claw their way to the top of the food chain, to be bossed around by a raddish!
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -4/+23No, it was pretty much health benefits that drove me.
- Murdats, on 01/13/2009, -3/+22I would but I can't find them
- Renton, on 01/13/2009, -0/+18More importantly, Big Macs contain real meat? That's news to me.
- mithrasinvictus, on 01/13/2009, -2/+20For most of our history we have been eating healthy animals, not the gross crap that is turned out by the meat industry for the past few generations. (including cannibalism)
- Egg333, on 01/13/2009, -5/+22I'm no vegetarian but I do enjoy a tasty garden burger from time to time. Much better for you.
- azureskies88, on 01/13/2009, -3/+19If I ever went vegetarian, I would be veg + bacon.
- Tarkaan, on 01/13/2009, -2/+18I live in Korea. They eat both.
- tattertech, on 01/13/2009, -2/+17@mrZo - Clearly you've never had a good steak. I'll admit a light seasoning makes it better, but on a good steak it should be very light.
- ambion, on 01/13/2009, -4/+19I hate carnies, they have really small hands.

In the UK I would say it is about 1:30 of the teenagers I teach are vegetarian and up to a third have played with the idea or tried it for a time.
Many cultures around the world are vegetarian - and they have thrived for many hundreds of years.
Hindus and many Buddhists to name a couple. That amounts to a few billion people. - mithrasinvictus, on 01/13/2009, -2/+141 in 2 kids is obese.
- richiestang78, on 01/13/2009, -7/+19If someone wants to be a vegetarian fine, but I hate people who are and then use the line that eating meat is wrong, that were not meat eaters. Humans have been eating meat in one form or another for tens of thousands of years, hell modern Livestock wouldnt even exist if we didn't breed them to for that purpose.
- sv650touring, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12I've seen obese vegetarians. They love their cookies.
- DOCNM, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12I fail to see the irony as well
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -20/+32I, for one, am a proud member of the Carnitarian movement. Thousands of kilometers of land are wasted on agriculture, destroying precious rainforests and exotic plant and animal life that are essential to our overall survival on this planet. Therefore, my fellow carnitarians and I have resolved never to eat vegetables; and indeed to restrict our diets to naught but the occasional carnival worker.
- timmywiff, on 01/13/2009, -1/+13I thought all baby goats were vegetarians
- bieber, on 01/13/2009, -7/+19Either his parents weren't doing their job, or the kid just happens to be small. Vegans, just like everybody else, come in all shapes and sizes. In fact, a child raised vegan properly is going to be far better off, healthwise, than with any other sort of diet. Cow's milk is not good at all for human health in the long run (and no, it doesn't make your bones stronger, try Googling "osteoporosis and milk" if you're still hooked on that particular falsehood), and chicken's eggs are no better (the damn things are little cholesterol bombs). If your friends' child is small and has allergies, it's probably just because he's a small person and has allergies, not because he's a vegan. I'm tired of hearing people blame everything that happens to be wrong with vegan children on veganism, when that's just not how it is. The truth is, there are thousands of perfectly healthy vegan children out there, all living far healthier lives than their peers.
Your suspicions are all fine and dandy, but they mean absolutely nothing scientifically. But you probably won't believe me, so here, I'll quote the American Dietetic Association: "Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence." - roddack, on 01/13/2009, -2/+13because body weight is a function of eating meat as opposed to how many calories are consumed?
If you ate 5000 calories of veggies a day you would still gain weight - bigfinger, on 01/13/2009, -0/+11Have you ever seen some Indians? Most of us don't eat meat and we have some fat ass people too!
- Drakoi, on 01/13/2009, -9/+20If you're not eating meat, you're probably eating more processed food, i.e. MORE CHEMICALS. Sure if you go to the market 3 times a week and get fresh produce, good for you, but most people don't have the time or the knowledge to do that successfully.
Forget this B.S. about "meat vs. no meat". The debate should be about "food vs. the crap the food industry sells you" - ambion, on 01/13/2009, -6/+17meat is murder and murder tastes like barbequed heaven. :)
- grungefan, on 01/13/2009, -8/+18I never really understood vegetarians. I guess it's alright if your religion forbids meat, or if you really don't like the taste of it, but if you're in it for animal welfare, you're really just half-assing it. Do you think dairy cows are pampered and live a life of luxury? At least animals raised for meat have their suffering ended early. Why not go the whole nine yards and become vegan?
- RabidAngel, on 01/13/2009, -1/+11That stat is for children. 4% of the overall U.S. population is now vegetarian (and growing).
- Metalcard, on 01/13/2009, -4/+14Perhaps this is evolution in action, perhaps its now that humanity is making the gradual change to vegetarianism.
Also, I agree with the balanced diet idea too. - PhoenixFlames, on 01/12/2009, -39/+49This will increase over time and it's better than 100 out of 200 kids being obese as they shove another big mac and large fries down their throats, naturally washed down with a coca cola.
- legacy5k, on 01/13/2009, -1/+11Dugg, I agree. It seems kind of ridiculous to me to be vegetarian instead of vegan.
Ethically, you are still supporting the industry that tortures animals.
Nutritionally, you are still consuming lots of animal protein, saturated fat and cholesterol by consuming milk, eggs and cheese. In fact, cheese is really a lot worse for you than meat.
It makes no sense to me. - asdfgafawer3, on 01/13/2009, -1/+11The demand isn't decreasing if we each want more to make up for each individual's decline.
