- AnteChronos, on 10/11/2007, -4/+115Here's some more detailed information about the surrounding circumstances: http://alt.tnt.tv/specials/moi/photo_boston.html
In short, there were multiple fire crews on the scene, and they were bringing a ladder truck over to the window to rescue the two, but didn't quite make it in time. What was the photographer supposed to do? Run over and attempt to catch them? Do you think he was even close enough for that? Besides, a couple of hundred pounds falling on you from several stories up is a good way to end up dead yourself. - TalkingBanana, on 10/11/2007, -2/+88Truly stunning picture, and I'm glad the girl lived.
- UndeadZmobie, on 10/11/2007, -9/+68You sick bastard.
- ChronicColonic, on 10/11/2007, -12/+70Was the potted plant okay?
- tpaine, on 10/11/2007, -2/+51The article says this picture "paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes." How many lives do you suppose this one photo has saved? Now maybe you think it was more important for him to take the picture than it was for him to put himself uselessly under her? Never mind that he was on top of a fire truck and that he would have been in the way of firemen doing their job.

- Auerbeck, on 10/11/2007, -5/+48"Despite a heroic effort, O’Neil knew he had been just seconds away from saving the lives of both."
WhoTF is O'Neil? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+34the falling rails make it even more shocking and surreal.
- PixelVision, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34what a ***** fire escape
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31It says O'neil as if it had mentioned him before in the article, but it didn't. Who is (s)he? but most likely he.
edit: definitely he - vuke69, on 10/11/2007, -7/+36*****
- holzp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25The fireman on a ladder moments away from reaching the pair.
- holzp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22....and are the parts of the picture that had the real impact on change.
- Arainach, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20@steelmaverick:
Really? Ever tried tracking a rapidly moving object with a camera? Much less tried to track it AND get near-flawless composition including leading space? All while manually tracking the focus and holding the camera steady enough to get the shot? I'd wager a guess and say no, because if you ever had you'd realize that it's not easy in the slightest. - rarson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Just pretend that there's no gravity and everything is floating.
Seriously though, this picture is so clear that it looks fake. I mean, obviously it's not a fake, but this is a damn good photograph. I don't think you could take this picture any clearer than this. Pretty amazing picture. - LadyBeGood, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I remember when that photo first appeared. It was quite shocking to us pre-digital cavemen.
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17Ya, silly photographer shoulda flew up and saved them instead of taking the picture.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was "Oh no, not again". Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.
- OneLess, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11@ nreynolds:
O'Neil was a fireman who was on the roof above them. The reason the caption is so choppy is because they copy-pasted bits of it from elsewhere:
http://www.bppa.net/events/dec03/dec03.htm - jackhole, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10They did not give the Pulitzer Prize to Anybody. They gave it to Stanley Forman, who shot an important photo. Quit submitting your amateur baby pictures to the Pulitzer committee.

- sogracefully, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11does this feel like a really disrespectful thing to anyone else? to be sitting in our comfy chairs, gawking at a photo of people on the verge of death and then making it popular on digg so other people will gawk at it too?

Server looks pretty solid at the moment. - DrummerAndrew, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14It had to be a strange amount of time between snapping that picture and developing it. Gotta be hard to balance the "Man, I got this amazing photo" with the "Holy crap I caught her last moments on Earth." I have a hard enough time waiting to develop my pictures of friend's parties and landscapes.
Anyone saying "Pics or it didn't happen" here? Don't think so. Crazy pic. - VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -3/+9I sat there reading the caption again and again trying to figure out who O'Neil was...
Still confused... - subliminalurge, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14@lesty
The article says nothing about women. It mentions one woman and a young girl.
Been skipping your ESL class lately? - UCFartstudntJON, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Lesson from Parkur: Jump feet first.
- freshprinceofbk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Man, I've had dreams that've felt like that. Amazing photo.
- garfonzo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6from the link posted by earlier digg member:
"Both were seeking help from fireman Bob O'Neil, located on the roof directly above them. O'Neil moved to the fire escape and motioned for the truck's ladder to be brought to them. The flames came closer and closer to the fire escape as Forman continued to shoot. Then, at the very instant the ladder reached the trio, the fire escape gave way. O'Neil clung to the ladder, but Bryant and Jones fell helplessly"
Second post in this thread has a link to the article that has more explaination. - Visnik, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"Never mind that one picture, that's one awesome site (with many more powerful photos)."

very powerful and upsetting. - NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It looks like the fire escape collapsed. Look at any urban fire escape and you'll invariably find a potted plant or two.
- Matt2k, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4That's the saddest ***** thing I've ever seen

My wife was quietly ironing when the cross-street neighbor choose to jump over the 5th floor.
Hence, I can teel you that, for some of us, watching strangers die _is_ harder than you might think. - Scoresheet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What part of "But more important, his work paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes" don't you get?
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5My god, now this picture chilled me...

Exactly what I thought when I saw this...sure its Pulitzer winner, but this is Digg, not a photographic discussion group - RyeBrye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Whoever put that caption together needs to go back to the 2nd grade - this writing is just plain bad.
