- dig412, on 11/07/2007, -1/+14WTF is with all the Daily Mail stories?
Its the UK equivalent of a Fox newspaper, seriously. - scabbers, on 11/06/2007, -1/+10Aspirin and Ibuprofen are generic = not much profit to be had. I think you're even cynical than me!
- epimer, on 11/06/2007, -1/+9From another source on the same story, "The study was supported by grants from the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Kinetics Foundation to Dr. Alberto Ascherio Harvard School of Public Health, who is the senior author of the study, as well as a grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke."
Another conspiracy theory quashed o/ - lilbitmoreslyk, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6hello Ibuprofen Addicts Anonymous
- macwisdom, on 11/07/2007, -8/+14One question who sponsored the study?
- Xanin, on 11/06/2007, -0/+5Not really, ibuprofen isn't patented any more; any old company can produce generic tablets, which means that no one big company could have the monopoly.
- bjs3171, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5ibuprofen would be a pain RELIEVER not a pain KILLER. Vicodin is a pain killer.
- Xanin, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4Initially I was extremely sceptical, but it was published in Neurology, which is a respected journal. Still warrants more research, but hopefully something will come of it.
- quakerorts, on 11/07/2007, -1/+5Inflammation is the cause of many diseases but NSAIDS and Statins are not our best choice for reducing inflammation. A change in diet and an increase in B vitamins is a much, much better choice. Besides which a 60% drop in risk is not huge. Based on the numbers in the article, about 17 per 100,000 get Parkinson's now. A 60% drop brings that down to about 7. The side effects for the 990,000 people who would not have gotten Parkinson's anyway will be much worse than the 10 who were spared the disease.
- Otto, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2Note that it says "paracetamol" has no impact. That stuff is called "acetaminophen" in the USA, aka Tylenol.
One other common source of acetaminophen in the USA is in Excedrin, where it's combined with aspirin and caffeine. - Neiby, on 11/06/2007, -1/+3Studies have also shown that not drinking gallons of Nutrasweet-laden Diet Pepsi a day greatly decreases your chances of getting Parkinson's, as well.
- Xanin, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2You just have no understanding of how drugs or the body works
- zyl0x, on 11/06/2007, -1/+3The first thing that popped into my head was someone saying "For the love of god, please! Our crashing drug industry needs your suppo-- I mean.. take lots of unneces..uh, INCREDIBLY necessary medications to prevent bad things from happening to you."
- merwin, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2Not if you take it as directed two or three times a week.
- Xanin, on 11/06/2007, -1/+3It also makes you look cool if you have a cane
- catalysis, on 11/07/2007, -1/+3..and increase your chance of liver failure
- asskey, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2If there was a Fox newspaper it would be all over here
- crimsonnblue, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2isn't there a downfall to doing this?
- shivamib, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Nice.
- Mockylock, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1What if you take a double dosage?
- petewiz, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1The band or the loudmouth drug addict radio host?
- DiggityDugged, on 11/07/2007, -4/+5gotta agree with catalysis, 2 ibuprofens a week for life would destroy your liver so easily, this sounds more dangerous than parkinson's itself.
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -1/+2Have one of the drive, and then the rest of them walk down the street. Let the "elderly problem" eliminate itself.
- masterofgrond, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Two a week is not going to rape your liver any more than normal alcohol consumption. Now if you were taking 2+ per day for life, issues might result.
- Hyru, on 11/07/2007, -0/+1Anybody else read "Over-the-counter-strike painkillers"? Damn I need to unplug.
- Rijnzael, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Percocet is crap. Intra spinal morphine injection FTW.
- 4eloBek, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1...but maybe some traditional medicine can do it to? I mean pills well is more of the same, but its better some natural stuff like some plants etc.!
- RobotBuddha, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Not surprising based on previous studies. The big news that I can see is just how infrequent the dosing might need to be. And just going by memory here, but 200mg of ibuprofen twice per week should have no significant hepatotoxicity.
That said, I'd want to read the actual study before placing too much on this. The implication that they didn't control for dosing of aspirin gives me a lot of concern. Neurology usually has pretty high standards, but there's not a journal around that doesn't have a study with either a glaring flaw, or a glaringly flawed press coverage, somewhere. - Rijnzael, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1This is OTC though. Big Pharmaceuticals doesn't really have the entire share of the OTC market; you can find many more generic pills OTC than you can Rx.
- ArmandoM, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Apparently you have no understanding of how humor works.
- merwin, on 11/06/2007, -1/+1Vicodin is crap. Percocet FTW.

- MikeFallopian, on 11/06/2007, -4/+1If over-the-counter painkillers have that effect, just imagine what the prescription ones can do. I must have a 0.000002% chance of getting Parkinson's by now - I knew that habit would turn out to be useful.
- hooblagoo, on 11/07/2007, -5/+1This sure is great for the pharmaceutical companies! Hmm...
