- drewfusb, on 06/08/2009, -3/+311Oprah gave us Dr Phil. Think about this when you try to defend how much she cares about people.
- chris480, on 06/08/2009, -10/+316Using such a large platform to spread this type information is a dangerous act. Many of the guests do indeed give out good info. But all it takes is one or two guests such as Jenny McCarthy(getting her own show) to give deadly advice(anti-vax).

What weird alternate reality does she live in? - GeologicRecords, on 06/08/2009, -46/+241Dr. Plait criticizes Oprah for essentially advocating "dangerous medical nonsense" and points out that her influence over the buying habits of the culture makes this an even more dangerous situation.
- jhbarr, on 06/08/2009, -5/+196Likelihood that Oprah actually gives a *****. 0%
- riskybeats, on 06/08/2009, -10/+190Yes. I too, read the article.
- meddle447, on 06/08/2009, -4/+151I tried to convince my mother that Oprah is not a smart woman, and that she should be taken with a grain of salt. My Mother would just not believe it at all. "She has made all this money", "She is wealthy, and has a popular show". Round and round we went. I could not convice her that Oprah could be wrong about something.
Oprah is VERY powerful. I doubt Oprah even understands the power she has over people. - darkintheglow, on 06/08/2009, -7/+130Both this column and the original article should be required reading for any critical thinker -- and more important, for any Oprah fan.
- joshmoney, on 06/08/2009, -1/+81This guy has been on "The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe" and was really interesting. If you're interested in this kind of "pseudoscience debunking" be sure to check out their podcast. It's free on itunes and no I don't work for them, I just really enjoy their show. ; )
- breadfred, on 06/08/2009, -3/+76No. Giving kids a death sentence is a bitch. That, in a nutshell, is what this 'TV-personality' is doing. Promoting non-vaccination and such is promoting genocide.
- BobSagetFan, on 06/08/2009, -4/+75Not vaccinating children, using dangerous pills not approved by the FDA, not listening to doctors, etc.
- Cowboy1015, on 06/08/2009, -1/+55Oprah, shame on you for exploiting gullible people!
- Brassbud, on 06/08/2009, -4/+58Wow, the last page of that Newsweek article didn't pull any punches.
I'm not an Oprah fan, which I might like to say is because I'm a rational, independent-thinking person but is more likely just due to the fact that I have a penis rather than a vagina. I, however, had no idea Oprah was endorsing such irrational and dangerous ideas, though suddenly the Obama endorsement makes more sense (I kid, I kid). From the shows I've seen I just thought they were harmless tear-jerker stories, so I must say it does make me concerned about what kind of infuence she has on female friends of mine who swear by her. - rodted2, on 06/08/2009, -3/+55I'll amen that, didn't Dr. Phil, and I use the title doctor. very loosely by the way, but didn't he get barred from practice like twice for having sex with a patient? The guys a total dirt bag. Then there is Oprah herself, this toxic dump of uselessness has been spreading more BS then your average farmer. The only reason people still like her is because a. they have no lives outside of daytime TV, and b. they hope to one day get a free car.
- cmallinson, on 06/08/2009, -2/+51When Oprah questions something, millions of parents, who only get their advice from daytime talk shows will blindly think that it is bad. She doesn't need to say that vaccinations cause autism - she praised someone on her show that said it - and that's no different to these parents.
No science has shown that vaccines cause autism. Its speculation purely, and the studies have shown no link. - Soniti, on 06/08/2009, -2/+51It can't stop there- 4chan has to do something else... Please God, I hope they trick that stupid bitch again.
- cfuse, on 06/08/2009, -3/+49Except antivaxers kill *other* people's kids - and that is utterly wrong.
- rentmitchum, on 06/08/2009, -0/+45I also dislike how she was promoting Eckhart Tolle's books.. Now, the problem isn't so much with the author himself, but the fact that the stupid people buying them don't really realize that it's watered down Buddhism with a few of his own ***** crazy ideas thrown in designed to sell to Oprah's audience. He actually says in the one book that women are naturally closer to enlightenment. How ridiculous..
I know about these books because my girlfriend's idiot judgmental mother at one point took it upon herself to criticize and harass me because I found value in reading books about Eastern Religion.. She's a half-the-time christian zealot... she doesn't really believe in anything other than what she thinks is appropriate to believe in.. She took it upon herself to throw away several of my best books.. A good copy or 2 of the Tao Te Ching.. a few books by Alan Watts.. an I Ching.. (note, I love the fortune telling book for it's imagery and it's fascinating to me that it's like the source of binary, that or it helped the binary idea, something like that).. several several books. How Christian of her, right? I know people will say I'm generalizing, but my own damn mom and dad are the same way.. they might not throw them away, but they're so full of fear that they act like it's an infectious wound on their house.. It was despicable irrational bitch behavior.. Well guess what? 3 years later, Oprah is promoting "The Power of Now" or something.. she buys it and I took a look at it. I told her "This is Buddhism.. except you Oprahites think he came up with all the better ideas himself.. his contributions are just quackery".. She stopped reading it then and there after going on and on about him for a week or 2.. People are so god damned stupid..
Don't worry though, a few weeks later she had a new idiot fad to latch onto.. one with far less value than watered down buddhism.. at least Eckhart Tolle, while a sellout somewhat and exploiting the woman market, he had the ideas of Buddhist mindfulness down in the book.. When she moved on to "The Secret" I couldn't help but mock her openly.. She actually wrote herself a fake check.. to the "bank of the universe" for 100,000 dollars.. she said "I don't need a lot.." she acted like writing less than a million would fetch her the money for her humility or something.. I don't really understand how people can be so ***** ready to follow.. Any books I've read, in a wide array of subjects, have been from a real passionate personal interest.. People who say they read, but they actually only read what Oprah says, don't actually gain anything.. in fact, they lose the ability to develop their own opinion of the material.. they take Oprah's.. Disgusting. - JoeyNine, on 06/08/2009, -4/+48This just in from the no ***** department: Oprah Only in it For the Money!
- breadfred, on 06/08/2009, -3/+44No, these alternatives are NOT harmless. They give people a false sense of security, they buy medication that has NOT been tested in a double blind test, without a scientific foundation.
People who believe these alternatives work, are likely not going to the medically trained doctor in time to prevent further symptons of their incurrent disease (or wahtever they are suffering from), heightening the chance they will do some serious damage to their bodies.
And don't get me started on the untold misery that has happened to the kids who have been denied access to preventable medicine (vaccinations) by their parents, who were following guidance from You KNow Who. - Yage2006, on 06/08/2009, -0/+38America
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -1/+39That you can get free food from KFC but when you get there all you get for free is disappointment and tears
- KaiserArny, on 06/08/2009, -1/+38You should read the original Newsweek article if you don't understand what's wrong with her advices.
http://www.newsweek.com/id/200025
Most may be intelligent enough to not blindly follow all of her advices, but if only 10% of her audience uses some of her snake oils that she promotes, that's still millions of people. - taxman, on 06/08/2009, -3/+40As much as i would like to hate on Oprah (and this is a good platform) i would rather hate on the millions of idiots who value her inputs on how to live their life.
- tibib, on 06/08/2009, -1/+38http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Plait
that's why. - Logicexe, on 06/08/2009, -1/+37Even the unvaccinated children?
- kufu91, on 06/08/2009, -2/+37uhhhh, not really.
she's not really political in the way that rush does and neither of them by any stretch of the imagination make people think. - theonlywizdum, on 06/08/2009, -3/+37Unfortunately, the advice about not getting vaccinations can hurt the rest of us.
- DismantleRepair, on 06/08/2009, -0/+33Over 9000, mind you.
- LibertyPrime, on 06/08/2009, -1/+31Oprah isn't either so he has a point.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+29Well seeing as he got a doctorate, and not a knighthood or a consecration, why can't we call him doctor?
- Zapple100, on 06/08/2009, -1/+30Ever notice that when a magazine writes a piece that bad about you, they put a pic on the cover that makes you look like a nut job.
That cover pic looks like Oprah want to do the Vulcan mind meld to the reader. - scamper22, on 06/08/2009, -1/+28I don't doubt Oprah cares,
But as they say... the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
As true for government as it is for Oprah. - danj484, on 06/08/2009, -2/+28@ Pusod: the issue is that Oprah and McCarthy push hard the idea that vaccinations WILL make your kid autistic, when the only study to suggest that this idea was true was conducted by a "scientist" who was later found to have completely fabricated his results. Of course, McCarthy isn't smart enough to get this point, and Oprah apparently doesn't care, and most people (read: people who watch Oprah) can't get past sensationalist headlines.
- darkintheglow, on 06/08/2009, -2/+28You don't have to be a doctor to be able to diagnose the harm that comes from discouraging critical thinking and promoting pseudoscience.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -6/+31Just don't piss off her vagina. He's packin' heat.
- ahawks, on 06/08/2009, -0/+25I like this and I don't. It's hilarious if you're aware it's just a 4chan practical joke... but for the bajillion people who watch Oprah and just want to protect their children, this little joke just pushed them farther into supporting internet regulations.
Essentially, this was just poking the bear, and that's retarded. - ngregge, on 06/08/2009, -0/+25Besides, if he was a knight it would be "Sir"
- cyrix, on 06/08/2009, -4/+29Brush your shoulders off? Well I guess that clears up why you're supporting Oprah so much.
Yeah. I went there. Seriously though, ***** Oprah. - Terasiel, on 06/08/2009, -1/+26" Just stay away from certain types of suspected vaccinations that can lead to autism." This is the problem. There isn't a shot that has been proven to give you autism. There is still debate about how to properly identify autism much less know how to force it onto someone after birth.
- stubcn75, on 06/08/2009, -0/+24The Newsweek article:
http://www.newsweek.com/id/200025 - theonlywizdum, on 06/08/2009, -0/+24Neither is Oprah, what was your point again?
- AaronPDX, on 06/08/2009, -1/+25It's stuff like this that barely keeps me from wanting 4chan wiped from the internet.
- FortyCaliber, on 06/08/2009, -0/+24Why does everyone forget that she used to do TRASH TELEVISION in the 80's and 90's akin to Rikki Lake, Sally Jesse Raphael, Jerry Springer and Phil Donahue?
Opinion: http://www.yaleherald.com/archive/xxi/2.2.96/opini ... - jmanfivek, on 06/08/2009, -2/+25Number of preventable diseases and deaths from a lack of vaccination. While not directly related to her outspoken rhetoric, this tally was started around the time she went public with her nonsense.
http://www.jennymccarthybodycount.com/Jenny_McCart ... - MaxxusFlamus, on 06/08/2009, -0/+22the irony is that the anti vax folk think that they are actually thinking critically.
Critical thinking itself is useless unless it's tempered with the humility to accept scientific evidence. - inactive, on 06/08/2009, -5/+27She also talks about adult porn as if it were child porn. It seems like she can't distinct the difference.
- iEATcatFOOD, on 06/08/2009, -0/+22I know a certain bear that wouldn't mind being poked
- FortyCaliber, on 06/08/2009, -2/+24Critical thinkers wouldn't //NEED// to read it because they are already thinking critically.
McCarthy was nice for while (in the 90's) when she was nice to look at... but who the ***** thinks that a Playboy centerfold and short-lived host of MTV's "Singled Out" has anything useful to say just because she cleaned her image up* and doesn't pose nude?
*see " http://www.randomchic.com/chics/jenny_mccarthy/jen ... " for McCarthy cleaning up her image. -
