- Turambar, on 11/17/2008, -12/+111I fully expect them to refuse any cancer cures, replacement organs, and nerve regeneration technology derived from this experimentation. If they don't, then I get yet another reason to call christians hypocrites.
- switchmullet, on 11/17/2008, -10/+59"Twice during his presidency, Bush has vetoed bills passed by Congress that would have lifted restrictions on stem cell research."
perhaps this president will do his job and listen to the ppl instead of running a personal agenda - mikbunn, on 11/17/2008, -1/+48Do you REALLY need another one? That's just greedy.
- SQLserver, on 11/17/2008, -6/+41The only argument against stem cells is based on ignorance of the topic.
- mikbunn, on 11/17/2008, -9/+41How dare these scientists try to take away my paralysis! There's nothing wrong with it!
- Shogi, on 11/17/2008, -9/+36The opponents of stem cell research clearly have not been paying attention because scientists found a way to make synthetic stem cells from human skin.

Bam, no more controversy. - sgiffy, on 11/17/2008, -3/+29That's certainly promising research, but so far we are still in the early stage of stem cell research and in the early stages of research any and all potentials need to be researched. At this point the only honest answer anyone can give is that stem cells, of all kinds, have potential, potential we need to explore.
It might turn out that EST have no medical value, but we won't know until we research more. - oldhick, on 11/17/2008, -0/+25So then you won't care when Obama lifts the band, correct? It's all just smoke...
- Harabeck, on 11/17/2008, -0/+19Embryonic stem cell research has no reason to be controversial. Often the embryos are taken from patients during fertility treatments and then sit in a freezer until their shelf life expires and theyre thrown away. There is no reason not to use them for research.
- agentzero141970, on 11/17/2008, -2/+19So we are bracing for stem cells that have been dumped to the trash the past couple of years, and using those cells from fertility clinics that are not being used and thrown away for research instead. Its not abortion, its simply using undeveloped stem cells. I don't find whats the big problem from using stem cells. Plus we are saving more lives from stem cells. Its like saying our sperm cells are human and its considered an abortion. Just don't get it.
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -0/+15Seriously. It's gonna be fun when France and Italy are smoking us in the fields of medicine and science because we can't separate something this country was founded on preventing. Then we get to import whatever the technology will be rather than sending it out to the rest of the world and retaining our dominant stature. Same thing goes for the auto / oil / energy industry - what is it these guys just aren't getting?
- k3rfuffl3, on 11/17/2008, -3/+17There will always be a need for abortion. People will always make mistakes and display stupidity like in your post.
- k3rfuffl3, on 11/17/2008, -3/+17Your link doesn't even work, and non-embryonic stem cells can only switch to certain types of cells. For example, skin stem cells can only switch to things like bone or muscle.
- pintomp3, on 11/17/2008, -1/+15i don't think most people here are anti-christian, they are just tired of religion being forced down everyone's throat and dictating public policy.
- roctimo, on 11/17/2008, -0/+13Funny you mention sperm, because the bible decries "spilling your seed," aka masturbation!
Everything fun in life is a sin. Be a sinner. - newman8r, on 11/17/2008, -4/+16Finally, SCIENCE PREVAILS!
- angelgabe, on 11/17/2008, -1/+12I'm pretty sure the article states the facts very clearly. "Ending a ban on government funding for research using embryonic stem cells would be among the most controversial." No misinformation here.
- Khast, on 11/17/2008, -3/+12I think there should be a new law that has separation of Science and Religion as well. (I mean heck, they don't play well together anyways.)
- azhura, on 11/17/2008, -0/+9God made you that way, right? If HE wanted you to walk again, HE'd fix it.

Seriously though, some people are way nutty. I had a neighbor who had 13 kids. On the last one, her insides came out with the baby. The doctors wanted to give her a full hysterectomy. She told them that she would rather die per God’s will than willingly give up her ability to reproduce (also per God’s intention). Her husband told the doctors to knock her out and do the surgery since he didn’t want his wife to die (and really didn’t want any more kids, either). But, the fact that she was willing to DIE because of some crazy belief that she was better off dead than pushing out babies shows how some people take their benefits WAY too far. - Y2JCrisis, on 11/17/2008, -0/+9Michigan just passed a proposal dealing with just this. Don't make up a statement out of ignorance, stocad.
- azreal156, on 11/17/2008, -2/+10I'm sorry, but can you please call them extreme christians or something? I'm christian, but I have a flexible belief system that is entirely custom and I don't want to be associated with the dumbasses in my faith.
- roctimo, on 11/17/2008, -6/+14Uh, guys, clearly we don't need stem cell research because faith healing is an effective form of treatment.
- ricker2005, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8Please say social conservatives. I don't want to be associated with the ass clowns on the religious right just because I'm fiscally conservative. You guys already ruined the Republican party, at least let me have part of conservative.
- sgiffy, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7"Just because it's an embryo doesn't mean it isn't life."
Yes it does. An embryo sitting in a freezer at an in vitro clinic is not nor will it ever be a life (of the kind your talking about). Its a collection of a very small number of cells with none of the hallmarks of human life. If we are to say that ti is a life of the sort we try and avoid killing then we need to say the same thing about fungus, bacteria, bugs ,etc all of which exhibit more autonomy and 'life' then an embryo.
And we amputate arms all the time for medical reasons. Could there be an alternative? Sure, but right now it is often the best course of action and all we can do is make the best decisions with the information that we currently have. - Zenham, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7I will support the premise that an embryo is wholly a human being the day that any of them can live outside of the womb without artificial life support.
- angelgabe, on 11/17/2008, -3/+10Hooray for science!
- thesonofdarwin, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Gotta be careful with using stem cell without specification.
Embryonic stem cells are omnipotent - with the right signals, they can differentiate into any other type of cell.
Skin stem cells at best are multipotent, which means they can give rise to specific lineages of cells.
There are many different types of stem cells in the adult body - we'd die without them. Unfortunately once embryological development is over these stem cells lose their omnipotency. If multipotency works for the specific research, by all means use those types of stem cells. Omnipotency completely opens up the field, though.
Edit: I see k3rfuffl3 was getting at the same thing. - dlm85, on 11/17/2008, -5/+12Quick, somebody do something. We need to protect the snowflake babies who are still waiting for a womb..
- intekra, on 11/17/2008, -3/+10I'm not pro life or pro choice, but I'm pro abortion.
- sodade, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8I love how religious people feel that they have enough cred to call something "barbaric."
- xexx, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8Funny how it's always the non-scientists that say that.
- Harabeck, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8Those embryos would have never been born anyway, most are harvested during fertility treatment and then sit in a freezer until theyre thrown away.
- TWiThead, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8I've heard that there's been promising research in the area of pluralization without the use of an apostrophe.
- BevansDesign, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8Yea, let's keep embryonic stem cells illegal. It's much more ethical to dispose of them like we do now than to use them for science to help humanity.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6If God weren't pro-abortion, he wouldn't claim 50% of the embryos.
But that is OK, because there is some supernatural plan there, or at least people didn't make a decision.
You, know, but it's natural, so we won't be sending a group of cells to an emergency room.
What happens to this nonsense philosophy when every cell in your body could be turned into a clone? Washing could be considered mass murder. - publiclurker, on 11/17/2008, -2/+8Not true, the entire university would loose their funding if anyone there researched the embryonic lines. But then again, reality is not your strong suit is it?
- Anub1s, on 11/17/2008, -1/+7And the only reason why that is opposed to is because of religious nuts. It's amazing what self-delusion will make you oppose.
- dagamer34, on 11/17/2008, -2/+8Last I remember, researchers never messed with pluripotent stem cells that have the potential to turn into a human being. It's always been totipotent cells that can turn into any cell in the human body, but has ZERO chance of becoming a human life.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 11/17/2008, -1/+6Oh, the undifferentiated blastocysts -- we hardly knew you.
Cue the memorial service and tiny burial coffins for these stem cells, as they ignore the misery of the living. - Zenham, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5My magic skypixie buddy says you're wrong!
- newman8r, on 11/17/2008, -5/+10I think we should make your religion illegal instead
- jawshoeuh, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5The Flying Spaghetti Monster demands you take that back this instant!
- Harabeck, on 11/17/2008, -1/+6Adult stem cell research is still in it early stages, it may turn out that they are not medically valuable at all, or that they are more limited. Also, meanwesttexan, where do you think most of the money for research comes from? Especially for universities?
- Anub1s, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5"Every sperm is sacred, every sperm is great. If a sperm is wasted, God get's quite irate."
- VitriolAndAngst, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5The problem is, if you can't say it on a bumper sticker -- you've already lost the debate. And by debate, I mean, hopelessly talking to a wall.
- sgiffy, on 11/17/2008, -3/+8Because outside of fantasy land we don;t know which kind of stem cells will prove best for what kind of uses. Could be one or the other, but more likely each will have a role to play.
- azhura, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4But, but this wasn't mentioned in the holy scripture!! Surely we should keep following a outdated holy book to the T!! Damn the future!
/sarcasm - Zenham, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4Amen to th.... oh wait...
- Harabeck, on 11/17/2008, -1/+5The embryos that would be used for this research are just thrown away right now, how is that any better?
