- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -12/+105heres a story title for you guys, "Three-thirds of people beaten with batons need medical attention."
- scy1192, on 06/18/2008, -4/+471/3 = 33%
1/4 = 25%
a more accurate (and non-sensationalist) figure would have been 1/4. - slvrbullet87, on 06/18/2008, -3/+38Stun guns are considered less lethal. This doesn't mean they do not cause harm, just that they don't do as much damage as guns and clubs.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -10/+4425 < 26 < 27 < ****28**** < 29 < 30 < 31 < 32 < 33 < one-third < 34...
Really? One third?
Buried. - SulkyGirl, on 06/18/2008, -27/+57Maybe avoid resisting arrest and/or aggressively confronting police officers? Just a thought.
- doctechnical, on 06/18/2008, -6/+33Excuse me Captain Obvious, but how many weapons are there that *aren't* dangerous?
Yes, the Taser is dangerous. So are billyclubs. So is mace. So is a revolver. However, I didn't see any data in this article on just how these other deterrent technologies stacked up to the taser in terms of medical requirements. Which leads me to believe this article is pretty much pointless. - Dragular, on 06/18/2008, -7/+33more importantly, "Three-thirds of police departments take those who have been shocked by Tasers to medical facilities as standard protocol."
- Namakemono, on 06/18/2008, -2/+1878% of people bitten by purple bunnies on Tuesdays crave peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches.
- JSlap, on 06/18/2008, -1/+16What a Stupid article. I've worked in an ER for a few years. whenever a police officer uses pepper spray or a taser (or any sort of force), they have to give the "victim" the option to go to the hospital. It has nothing to do with whether or not they need it, it merely delays the amount of time it takes them to go to prison.
- idavidtang, on 06/18/2008, -3/+16100% of people shot with RPGs need coroner attention.
- mrblaack, on 06/18/2008, -3/+15and a new pair of pants....
- mdehart, on 06/18/2008, -6/+182/3 of people don't care
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -8/+20they definitely shouldnt ban them. cops just need better education. and there should be harsher penalties for cops that use the guns inappropriately.
as for being dangerous weapons, all weapons are dangerous, if they werent they would be useless. in most cases its better that a cop shoot someone with a stun gun than with a real gun. - jtmitl, on 06/18/2008, -2/+13its not just that, officers are just crazy sometimes... like that one cop who tasered that a guy for taking too long to get his proof of insurance... theres a vid of it somewhere but im too lazy to look
- Whackly, on 06/18/2008, -1/+11The number of taser deaths goes up because taser use is way up. Are police firearm discharges way down? I think they probably are. If police are using tasers properly they are a miracle tool compared to a firearm. We've all seen evidence that some police are way too quick to use tasers on people but that's a symptom of the way we allow police to be trained to dominate people in order to gain control of situations. That is not the fault of the taser. I'd rather be tased than shot and, honestly, if I'm ever in a situation where a cop needs to tase me I'ts probably a sure bet I'll need a trip to the E.R. whether I'm tased or not. How many of these hospital trips were from the rough treatment after the tasing or the violent action that brought on the tasing in the first place and not really from the tasing itself? Tasers are an awesome lifesaver. Don't blame the weapon, blame the triggerman.
- YZBot, on 06/18/2008, -3/+12Most of the time its probably nothingmore than to get the probes removed, or puts some ointment on a tiny little burn.
- noumuon, on 06/18/2008, -2/+112/7 would be better
- insomniac8400, on 06/18/2008, -2/+11Well the benefits of a taser out weigh the health risks. The problem is that police officer's are allowed to use a taser for any reason. Like on a traffic stop because the guy argued with the ticket or when someone is already tackled to the floor by police and then just tasered for fun. A taser should be used when someone has a weapon, runs away, or physically attacks an officer. Only in situations where the officer is in danger of being hurt. Not when someone lays on the ground to try to prevent arrest. When it is used as an offensive weapon it becomes torture. It would be like shooting someone in the leg for not putting their arms behind their back.
- fr0ng, on 06/18/2008, -2/+11So 28% is closer to 33% than 25% these days? Title should read "one-fourth of people shot by Taser need medical attention", not "one-third...."
I guess our education system IS failing. - UTKEngineer, on 06/19/2008, -0/+8In a related story, 100% of people shot with a bullet need medical care or funeral arrangements afterward.
- Shoegaze99, on 06/18/2008, -1/+9Yes, I'm sure if you ask nicely people will cooperate. After all, it's not like the police are involved because the situation is out of control or anything. A pleasant smile and delicious gumdrops are all you need to subdue people who will not cooperate with the law.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -4/+12or how about "two-thirds of people shocked by tasers were violent and/or were resisting arrest"
- uptwolait, on 06/18/2008, -2/+10One-third of people shot with guns need burial.
- SMichaelG2, on 06/18/2008, -4/+12I am an EMT and I respond to these calls. The reason 28% require medical attention is because the people shot with the tasers bitch and moan that their "chest hurts" This is because their muscles are sore from the shaking. Because the police do not want to get sued, they let them seek medical treatment. That article is complete BS, top to bottom. If americans weren't so sue happy and would take a little responsibility for their actions, maybe 1% would need medical attention.
These same people requesting medical attention are the same losers spending our tax dollars on food stamps, medicaid, SSI, and they waste my time as a volunteer EMT/firefighter at the fire station. I am completely amazed that some ignorant author would back their BS up. - ShnowDoggie, on 06/18/2008, -2/+10The problem is that is very much abused because the Taser is marketed as just a tool rather than a weapon of low lethality. This causes many officers to reach for the Taser before exhausting other means such a verbal communication or show of force. (Show of force should come before use of force) The Taser is a great tool because it can be used with less harm than a gun. But it is a weapon and can kill even when that is not the intent.
- ZenMojo, on 06/18/2008, -1/+8Maybe avoid being a drunk woman in a wheelchair or an angry six year old black kid.
- Shoegaze99, on 06/18/2008, -0/+7Yeah, 99.9% of the time all right.
That, or videos of perfectly reasonable, justified, and unremarkable TASER usage doesn't circulate all over the 'net because it's, you know, perfectly reasonable, justified, unremarkable, and therefore not worth discussing. - cdigioia, on 06/18/2008, -2/+9Because some people, due to high emotions and/or drugs, can resist the current power level.
- RogueMountie, on 06/18/2008, -1/+7This report is actually in response to several cases in Canada where civilians were killed by tasers when they were not being combative.
- dagnome1984, on 06/19/2008, -1/+7What about that cop that tased that old woman in her wheelchair 8 times and ended up killing her.
- Barackalypse, on 06/18/2008, -1/+7Sorry, but knowing several cops I question the whole "need" medical attention angle. The police where I live will nearly always take people for medical attention if they even appear injured and especially if they ask for it, because if they don't and the person actually is injured, they'll be in crapload of trouble. The cops have a term for it, they call it "jailitis", meaning people make stuff up to prolong going to jail. Do some tased people probably actually need medical attention, probably, are most of the incidents ones that actually needed medical attention from a doctor for, I doubt it. The article isn't very thorough.
- maiku00, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6The problem is, tasers arent used with the same kind of precaution that a gun is. Tasers are very dangerous, but are used with hardly a blink of an eye. A gun, on the other hand, is only used in the most dire of situations.
- ctrlfreak13, on 06/18/2008, -5/+11It's called a "less-than-lethal" weapon for a reason.
- Shoegaze99, on 06/18/2008, -3/+9And such incidents, of course, represent the majority of TASER usage and are not at all a rare exception.
- danomagnum, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6"three thirds of people shot wish they had be tazed"
- UTKEngineer, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6You've yet to meet a cop who doesn't identify and empathize with his captors?
- emaredubyou, on 06/18/2008, -0/+50% of people shot with nerf guns need medical attention.
- idavidtang, on 06/18/2008, -1/+6100% of people leaving identical comments need burial attention.
- RogueMountie, on 06/18/2008, -0/+5The report in question raises objections when tasers are used in situations that do not require the use of a weapon at all. A taser makes an excellent alternative to a firearm, but that is not what tasers are being used for.
- RogueMountie, on 06/18/2008, -1/+6If one more person says "100% of people shot by a gun need medical attention", I'll... well I guess I can't do anything about it. Maybe I'll have a nap.
- crapmatic, on 06/19/2008, -1/+6Kudos. I'm sick of the sensationalism on Digg.
- ZenMojo, on 06/18/2008, -1/+6This is why we have a presumption of innocence, because people like you made torches and pitchforks en vogue.
- dinostabOMG, on 06/19/2008, -1/+5You're assuming you can invariably trust the police to make the right decision.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -5/+9And most do take them to the hospital when they want to be safe about it!!
Why? Because the police officers DONT WANT TO BE SUED!
So now for being careful, its a bad thing that they were taken to the hospital !
What were the findings at the hospital???
Some had burn marks at the entry points - um DUH !!!!!!! - ShaggyRogers, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4That's the article's headline. Digg doesn't fail, the author of the article fails.
- mrsteveman1, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4You remember "don't tazer me bro" right?
That guy wasn't going for the cops guns, they just didn't feel like arguing. - IEatHamburgers, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4... but never get it because there is no body left to examine?
- SulkyGirl, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Um, yeah, I got it. It was extremely clever. Did you think I actually thought you were an overly skilled barnyard animal?
Incidentally, "inferring" doesn't mean what you think it does. Try "implying" next time. -
