Doubtful. Who can turn down a good steak or burger? - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Yeah right. I predict 90% of food will be GM crops with the other 10% overpriced, less nutritional, harder to grow organic foods for those people still afraid of GM crops. Trans-fats will be replaced with a synthetic that 20 years later turns out to be 10 times worse. More people will eat meat as it is genetically enhanced to both taste better and be more lean. Chickens will be genetically enhanced to be both mostly boneless and feel no pain thus trying to appease the PETA types (but they'll complain anyway).
- xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Hopefully by 2031 everyone will know that the Soviet joke is not funny anymore.
- captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Why are people going to start eating better in 25 years? We know NOW that McDonald's isn't good for you, but their still selling plenty of burgers. The only way this is accurate is that in 25 years all the people eating like crap now, are dead.
- AudioPhil3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20"Organic farming will represent more than half of all agricultural productivity in the United States, and 40 percent to 50 percent of the population will be vegetarian."
I, for one, welcome our Hippy overlords.
Seriously. - vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Food?
I just want to be a brain in a box in 25 years. As long as the synthetic blood has nutrients, I could care less what I'm eating as long as I get to simulate eating steak and drink beer in on the Matrix, Second Life, or whatever we are calling it in the year 2030..
But seriously, I'd hope we progress beyond eating food to stay alive but I hope we keep it around as a past time. I'd be fine with injections of nutrients as long as I get to still eat and drink the things I enjoy today. - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Agreed, this is an incredibly unrealistic assessment.
Consider this line:
"Also, obesity and diabetes rates will have been steadily declining for 15 years."
I'm glad that they decided to elaborate so heavily on this statement. Oh wait, it was completely unsupported. Really, it is a load of BS. While diet and nutrition certainly don't help, physical activity is a huge part of the problem, and they present no evidence that this will improve. If anything, it will worsen as electronic entertainment continues to improve. All in all, this article is nothing more than feel good garbage. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16This is all stuff I have been saying/doing for years:
Eliminating trans fat as they are el diablo, dark chocolate is better/tastes better, red wine is good for you, walnuts + salmon = one of best foods you can eat, don't eat foods that are processed to hell, take fish oil/vitamins/calcium suppliments daily, do not get into these stupid instant weight losing diets like atkins and the such, etc.
I seriously doubt 25 years will have that great an effect on our eating habits. We really have not changed that much even 50 years ago, let alone 25.
@nreynolds: It can be healthy food and great tasting. Walnuts and salmon are great tasting and are great for you. You are so used to eating crap that anything else tastes bad, once you change your diet unhealthy food taste synthetic and horrible - KyIe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Soylent Green is People!
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14In 25 years we will eat testes for breakfast and have 1 and 1/2 meals a day. Our diets will consist mostly of refined crab grass and we will punch women in the ovaries to say hello. These are my predictions in 25 years.
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yep by then we will have:
Rocket cars
Colonies on the moon...
...and mars too
contact an alien race
Robots will be human like and be widely used as servants for the human race
It's what people thought we would have in the 50's but it's actually happening!!! - alphagreg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I doubt that there will be no more milk chocolate in the future. We love comfort foods and we are not going to stop eating them because there is a healthier alternative.
McDonald's still sells a whole lot of hamburgers. - Dugg2Death, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hum, what do I want in 25 years? .... computer.. Earl Grey tea.. hot... *woosh*
- rasheman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I agree. Technology may change but humanity doesn't. I'll still be eating milk chocolate and steak even if I have to buy it off the black market.
- converge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9i love pooping.
- dstz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Dark chocolate, long recognized as both a rich indulgence and a health food, will dominate stores and homes alike. Milk chocolate will be largely a historical curiosity."
So, why ? fascism will become cool again ? - drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8But milk chocolate tastes good! It will always have a place as a candy, maybe not a food, but for its taste. Saying milk chocolate will die is like saying lollipops will die because their not healthy.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@Drbroccoli
Nah, if the education goes downhill, we'll keep our books that say USSR on the maps. - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I dont see why in 25 years we cant just grow the burger patties directly and not have to bother with the whole animal. Will vegetarians and vegans still object to "petri-meat"? The ethical, environmental, and econmical, concerns would be addressed for many I think.
- Superthug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wouldn't it be cool if you could inject the exact amount of nutrients into your body so you didn't have to take craps.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10That generation would have forgotten what the Soviets are if our education system continues to go down hill.
- guregu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I just hope that by that time we finally have those pizzas from Back to the Future II. You know, the tiny pizzas that the woman pulled out of the freezer and put into a microwave (or something) and the pizza expanded to full size, cooked and ready to eat in ten seconds.
***** awesome! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14"Doubtful. Who can turn down a good steak or burger?"
It takes an insane amount of grain to produce meat. It's not efficient. Meat may be harder to come by in the future.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I know this is completely off topic but I would like to thank DigitalGopher for actually posting something interesting on pre-election day.
I tire of seeing the politics blowing up. Stop submitting the random political trolling, we all probably know who we are going to be voting for tomorrow, be it Democrat or Republican.
Digg is a good news site and a good tech site. I know we have other agendas and things going on but let's not forget what drew us all here in the first place. - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7breast milk without the breast?! to hell with that!
- Hegemony, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Organic farming will represent more than half of all agricultural productivity in the United States"
Doubtful, genetically modified (GM) food is the future. We can feed everyone in the world with it. Say what you will, it's safe, efficient, and will save lives. Just like they said earlier in the article in reference to bacteriophages, "Of course, this will be after years spent convincing the public that these techniques are indeed safe". It's the same for GM foods. The public needs to be convinced of it's safety. So look into it. - golhra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Isn't the whole point of being healthy so you don't have to be on a diet so then you can eat unhealthy burgers...but then that would cause you to have to go on a diet....
AHHH!
Play soccer or some sport. Stay active. - NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You haven't tasted well cooked broccoli and cheese. It's the greatest thing if it's soft with the perfect melted cheese. I could go for some right now. Not to mention broccoli cheese soup is f*cking good.
- babayada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5When I see stuff like this I think of those absurd "Welcome to the World of Tomorrow!" films from the 50's.
- bootyfarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Brain in a box? But how will we shag? I'd prefer a future of lovin' for the booty farmer.
- dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@CBTF:
Don't worry, the meat will be grown in vats. No skin, no bones, no brains. Just a vat of muscle tissue. Imagine: an endless supply of tender calf meat without the "baby murder".
Now I'm hungry.
Edit: Nevermind, beat to the punch :( - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yea, I support healthy eating and all....but vegetarian!!! NEVER!! Meat is too good to leave behind!
- bdub92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"40 percent to 50 percent of the population will be vegetarian."
Bull ***** *****. Americans love their steak and always will!
-that includes me btw - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I demand regular quantities of my favorite Turkish Delight and sarsparilla, forthwith! And my grand-uncle wishes to inquire why our nearest super-market fails to carry his fine egyptian halvah.
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4she hydrated a pill IIRC
- sugarbearcsa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7this is just another prediction that will end up mostly false...
I while we might eat healthier than we do now. Every once and a while where still going to want to get a Greasey big mac and Frys, with a diet coke.. - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4marty jr: "Hey, when it's done, can you just shove it in my mouth? Hah hah"
marty sr: "Don't you be a smartass!"
lorraine: "hydrate level four, please. *DING* Thank you..."
marty sr: "Boy, ma, you sure can hydrate a pizza." - chumpbuster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Humanoid Utopia...
It's basically a combination of Blade Runner, Logan's Run, The Matrix and the first Muppet Movie...
Soylent Green is Kermit! - qwertydvorak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5umm... it already is... cigarettes are being phased out, ny about to ban trans-fats, we are being bombarded with ads all the time telling us how bad this food or that food is for us. it is only a matter of time before we are limited to a certain amount of children like china. it is inevitable, every country will reach a limit of people vs resources. the only thing that can stop it is if maybe a plague or other natural disaster wipes out a large number of us, and that will only work for the short-term. you never know though, a super-bug could come along and keep our population in check. the viruses are evolving, eventually we won't be able to make a drug strong enough to kill the virus/bacteria without killing the person. who knows, that's why i say "hang on and enjoy the ride while it lasts".................hooray steak !
- KenYN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What - breasts made redundant? It's getting Dugg down for that alone!
Agree with everyone else - this looks like filler material for a supermarket mag. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I predict in 25 years time we will have predictions about the future in 50 years time that will be horribly wrong.
Personally I hate the taste of dark chocolate, I also don't see everyone suddenly eating healthy or becoming vegetarians no matter what scientific reasons there are for it, when it comes down to it its all about taste and what the body craves, humans evolved as cavemen when we had to eat what we could get when we could get it. Try leaving a dog with a massive bag of dog food, it will eat until it explodes.
The only way this would happen is if we could manufacture foods that taste as good as there unhealthy counterparts or meat supplements (Tofu ain't going to cut it). - drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Hopefully I will be dead by 2031.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Utter *****, I'm sure. Sounds so similar to that "What the year 2000 will be like" written in 1950. You know, the one with plastic houses that cost $5,000, which are cleaned by a chemical spray. Then we get in our personal helicopter to go to the city.
Seriously though. I'm 25. In 25 years I'll be 50. What do my parents, who are now 50, eat? The same thing they ate when THEY were 25.
I don't plan on changing my diet, short of medical need of course, and I plan on raising my kids with a similar diet as I grew up with.
It sure is seductive to say "wow, 25 years, the world will be so different!" but it really won't change much, when you think about the number of generations that have to pass for anything to really change. - sumrandommember, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14Dammit, you'd think by then they'd figure out how to get rid of broccoli.
- Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ superthug
most of your crap is made up of bacteria anyway so you'd still take *****. - Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dark chocolate, YES
- megaloid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They ate Soylent Green during the Cultural Revolution, except they called it "Evil Landlords" and "Reactionary Intellectuals." They say it was okay with soy sauce, once you picked out the fillings.
- Bobski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6In the year 2525, If man is still alive. If woman can survive, they may find...
In the year 3535 ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies.
Everything you think, do and say, is in the pill you took today.
In the year 4545 ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes.
You won't find a thing to chew. Nobody's gonna look at you.
In the year 5555 Your arms hanging limp at your sides.
Your legs got nothing to do. Some machine doing that for you.
In the year 6565 Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife.
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too.
From the bottom of a long glass tube. Whoa-oh
In the year 7510 If God's a-comin, he oughta make it by then.
Maybe he'll look around himself and say.
Guess it's time for the judgment day.
In the year 8510 God is gonna shake his mighty head.
He'll either say.I'm pleased where man has been.
Or tear it down and start again. Whoa-oh
In the year 9595 I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive.
He's taken everything this old Earth can give.
And he ain't put back nothing.Whoa-oh
Now it's been ten thousand years, Man has cried a billion tears.
For what he never knew, now man's reign is through.
But through eternal night. The twinkling of starlight.
So very far away. Maybe it's only yesterday.
In the year 2525 If man is still alive.
If woman can survive, they may find.
In the year 3535 {fade} - NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This article is a bunch of *****. None of this will happen and a lot of people know it won't. Maybe SOME of the things listed will happen but that's only because it's impossible to deny certain things within reach--but for almost half of everyone to be vegetarian? LOADS of *****. I work at a restaurant where I serve meat in just about every sandwich. I reckon 2% of all sales attribute to vegetarian meals, and the same people return to eat more vegetarian meals sometimes just to further make this statement true. Meat will always be highest priority when choosing what to eat at any place I go to and those are my taste buds speaking.
This article is wishful thinking at best by somebody who hasn't eaten tasteful foods in a very long time. - fluffyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Milk chocolate? gone."
Over my dead body! Oh wait.. -
