- pimpbot1979, on 10/24/2007, -6/+88New study shows it IS ok for pregnant women to let people punch them in the stomach. "Fetus needs to grow up some time" says researcher.
- leftcoastfunk, on 10/13/2007, -1/+41"other than possibly increasing the risk of miscarriage, it appeared small amounts of alcohol did not harm the unborn baby."
mmmm...yeah. so now a miscarriage doesn't count as "harming" the unborn baby? And I thought miscarriages were a bad thing! Thanks for setting us straight... - ryecatcher22, on 10/13/2007, -0/+37i still wouldn't drink while pregnant.
- othersomethings, on 10/13/2007, -1/+33I think the point of "If pregnant = don't drink" argument is simply to keep women erring on the side of caution.
There are many Drs. and health practitioners that occasionally PRESCRIBE a glass of wine to pregnant women for relaxation purposes, but don't advertise the fact. - HunterTV, on 10/13/2007, -10/+33Pregnant women and whine go hand in hand.
- vidar808, on 10/13/2007, -1/+20I would definitely do anything that is in my power to limit chance of birth defects etc.
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"First you say, eggs are good! Then you say eggs are bad. Then you say, eggs are bad, but the insides might be good...but really it's the inside thats bad and MAKE UP YOUR DAMN MIND!! It's breakfast, and I GOTTA EAT."
-Lewis Black - shifty2, on 10/13/2007, -5/+19My mother drank when she was pregnant with me...
Dirty whore, slut, ***** kicker!
Look at me, I turned out just fine....
*****! piss out my ass! - deathweaver108, on 10/15/2007, -3/+14I teach high school and sometime in a resource room. Let me tell you from first hand experience.... don't drink while pregnant. Even a little bit. It isn't your life you are risking. Would you condemn someone to a life time of handicap? Please please don't risk it.
- JohnFlux, on 10/15/2007, -1/+10Our midwife told us that they used to tell people that a small glass of wine a day was fine. However people would then reason that since they hadn't drank all week, they could drink several bottles on the weekend. Despite much effort to try to fix this sort of reasoning, it became much easier to just simply tell people not to drink.
- Suplyndmnd, on 10/13/2007, -0/+9Yeah, i didn't get that either. Other than possibly killing it, it poses no risk.
- inactive, on 10/15/2007, -1/+9Another idiot!
No one ***** said this is a license to get plastered.
It's one ***** glass of wine. - inactive, on 10/15/2007, -0/+7Hello, Strawman!
What this is saying is that small amounts are just fine.
There is this conception in our society that having a glass of wine while pregnant makes you this demon, but that's a social stigma.
Has nothing to do with being "selfish" as to point out "Hey, in reality, your body can process it JUST FINE".
It's a shame people can't understand that.
If you're so selfish that you can't stop driving a car for a few months in order to protect a child then to be honest you shouldn't be a parent in the first place. You know, since car accidents are high and everything.. - jaytea90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8neither would i...mainly cause i'm a guy
- leftcoastfunk, on 10/15/2007, -1/+8Actually, no it's not. What you're trying to say is BS. What "has actually been known for a while" is that doctors still don't know exactly how and when alcohol can affect a fetus during pregnancy. What is "known" is that there are cases of FAS arising from women who had ONE SINGLE ***** DRINK while pregnant. There are also cases of women who drank way too much their entire pregnancy and didn't have a baby with FAS.
"but also a glass of wine a day/week will NOT harm anything." How can you ***** say this unless you have done the research?!?! Tell this to the women who had LESS than a glass a week and miscarried or have FAS babies. I'm sure they're listen to you.
Get your facts straight before spreading your own BS filth on here. Dugg down!
BTW I'm a pediatric RN and believe me - you don't want an FAS baby. It's a very nasty, 100% AVOIDABLE, 0% CURABLE disease. There shouldn't even be an argument here. - naonao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm waiting for the study which contradicts this and has women confused again.
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -2/+8Then never leave your house.
There are more harmful things that you expose yourself to on a daily basis than having a glass of wine.
Ever see the diets of some pregnant women? That ***** is WAY more harmful than this "glass of wine a day". - GerryBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hey, you actually read the article, good for you! Most Diggers just read the blrub at the top and comment based on that!
- ryecatcher22, on 10/13/2007, -0/+6It has nothing to do with living in fear. It's a choice. If other women want to they can. My brother's wife just had a baby and drank occasionally through the pregnancy and the baby was perfectly healthy. I'm not saying there's something wrong with it I just wouldn't want to.
- uselessexpert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Researchers can't make up their minds!...
- souljaboytellem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5and no one calls it the "sauce" anymore
- ryecatcher22, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4umm..
- brharri1, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4Except that the drugs are, well, different.
- HigherLogic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Seems like a small amount should be fine. What about in early times when water was not safe to drink, and everyone consumed very watered down ale? If I were a woman and pregnant though, I would probably just avoid it though to be safe (as well as certain foods, OTC medications, caffeine, etc.). Seems like a glass of wine would be much safer than soda.
- inactive, on 10/15/2007, -0/+4It's amusing how many people lack basic knowledge about how the body processes one glass of wine :)
Most people's only knowledge and experience with this is what they hear on TV or read from signs.
The fact is, the signs are geared towards your typical social drinker. You know, the people who go out once a week and get heavily buzzed and/or drunk. Obviously it covers alcoholics, but that's the extreme.
What this article is saying is ONE glass of wine a day is fine, because it is. This knowledge has been common for quite some time. At no point did they ever say "one glass of wine a day will harm your baby".
Your baby isn't any more harmed than your liver is by your one glass of wine a day. Do any more and you're asking for trouble, but seriously, too many people in here who obviously don't know much about how the stuff is even processed. - archer75, on 10/13/2007, -1/+5This isn't news. It has been safe for pregnant woman to have small amounts of alcohol for many many years. Small amounts cause no harm whatsoever. If fact I have never personally heard any doctor say that small amounts were harmful.
Even if you were pregnant for say, a month, and didn't know it and were drunk every weekend it would still cause no harm. We've asked doctors who all said don't worry about it, just don't get drunk anymore. - johndi, on 10/13/2007, -10/+14There is a lot of fear mongering and political posturing about alcohol. Dr. (Ph.D) and Professor Emeritus David J. Hanson has one of the best websites for separating the facts out of the political lies and myths surrounding alcohol. Light drinking should not be demonized like it is.
Check out his fact and fiction page, very enlightening.

http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/FetalAlcoholSyndr ... - GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There are no mods dingleberry. You're the mod.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5We all know that popularity determines safety....
It has nothing to do with alcoholism, it has to do with causing damage to the fetus, which is well documented. None of those researchers would pretend fetal alcohol syndrome doesn't exist.
Since when is drinking more important than the unborn child? Is it that ***** important that pregnant women be able to drink? No. - grammarpolice, on 10/15/2007, -0/+4Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by an extra chromosome dumb ass.
- mstump, on 10/15/2007, -2/+6The "no drinking while pregnant" rule is the result of litigation in the U.S., not research. In England, it's not uncommon to see a pregnant woman with a pint of Guinness. For strength!
- JohnFlux, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4Oh please, just because you come from a culture where there's a social stigma against not drinking?
- solis365, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4you mean to say they had sex before they were married?!?
inconceivable! - joeyjojo402, on 10/13/2007, -7/+10Can we all agree to stop using this phrase? It is getting old. When someone posts something remotely clever, it is almost guaranteed this reply will happen. Please take 3 minutes and think of a more original reply.
- silverchrysalis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, but have you seen paintings of the people in that time period? they were some ugly mugs- maybe low-dose fetal alcohol syndrome
- oldhick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Drink Guinness for the iron!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This has been common knowledge for years.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's not that anyone has to drink. It's just saying that small amounts are ok.
- inactive, on 10/15/2007, -2/+5Oh boy, just don't drink or smoke or whatever may be harmful for you and your child. Simply don't do it.
- bjs3171, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3um...i've known about this for about 10 years now.
- yunus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Safe or not the stigma is there. When a clearly pregnant woman orders a glass of wine at a restaurant people look negatively at her. I have even seen a restaurant refuse to serve a pregnant woman alcohol. If I owned a restaurant I would not serve to pregnant women in today's sue first ask questions later society.
- wtfpwned98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, try thinking about it again.
- wtfpwned98, on 10/15/2007, -1/+4Pregnant women in France drink wine, and note that this is not the same thing as drinking MD 20/20 every night until you pass out. They don't need doctors to tell them it's ok to drink wine while pregnant, because they've been doing it for long enough to know. Fetal alcohol syndrome starts to show up with alcoholism, not casual consumption of beer or wine, which have a relatively small amount of alcohol.
- xasx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have seen studies go back and forth on whether grapes are healthy or not!! I would rather be safe then sorry.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No *****? Really? /sarcasm
A mod is anyone who takes time out of their day to click the thumbs up or thumbs down. Not everyone does this. And at the time I posted, shifty2 was sitting at -1. So nyah. - Suplyndmnd, on 10/15/2007, -3/+5So you would risk the health and life of your unborn child so you or your wife could have a very small amount of wine? If you cant even get a buzz from it and only want the taste, get grape juice. Even thinking of introducing a harmful substance to an unborn fetus is stupid. You don't smoke, you don't drink, you don't do drugs. If you are absolutely dying to have a sip of wine then that's alcoholism and you won't be stopping at a sip.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Yes because we all would be horrified if a PREGNANT WOMAN weren't able to toast at a ***** wedding by drinking alcohol. What a shame.
- mstump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Criminal in most cases? Name one.
- GeoNine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have no idea why they are calling this "new guidance" its been this way for a long time. You have much better chances of your baby getting birth defects from smoking or power lines or chemical ridden food than from a glass of wine every now and then. If you don't have a kid and have never experienced a pregnant partner first hand before, wind is good thing, trust me.
- corkdorkdan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uh, because drinking small amounts of red wine has proven heart and other health benefits?
