- atlasdugged, on 05/28/2009, -1/+33Is that why I cough in Times New Roman?
- SpoonMSU, on 05/28/2009, -1/+26At least you're not coughing in Comic Sans.
- sunnycalif, on 05/28/2009, -0/+23International Health and safety institution has to issue warning labels for these kind of printers to inform users about health hazard and risks by using these printers.
- pingpants, on 05/28/2009, -0/+22*don't* read the fine print?
- pinkflyingpig, on 05/28/2009, -0/+21Is that why I always cough in the office? I though that I was allergic to my job; it turns out to be the printer :(
- booyahbitch, on 05/28/2009, -1/+21I live by the mantra "You start dying as soon as you are born", so I really don't give a *****. Live like every day could be your last...because it is true.
- PabloIV, on 05/28/2009, -2/+21So considering my office went paperless 4 years ago and therefore don't have a printer either at home or at work I should be able to keep smoking and be about as healthy as everyone else.
- SexyGeekGirl, on 05/28/2009, -1/+15I found the powerpoint presentation! http://www.ainse.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/000 ... The actual study is here http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es063049z but you have to pay to see it. No to printing save the trees! Pdf it :)
- fenceratpoly, on 05/28/2009, -3/+16One more reason to be paperless. Email rocks!
- GreenZephyr, on 05/28/2009, -0/+13Let's hope they don't find inkjet printers to be a health risk also...
- Tunafishjoe, on 05/28/2009, -0/+13Oh *****... I work at Kinkos
- monkcouver, on 05/28/2009, -1/+13That's definitely it! Stay away from the printer a bit when it is printing. Don't put a printer on your desk. Privacy has a cost.
- Solkre, on 05/28/2009, -0/+12Great, now us health conscious folks who print to PDF are still going to die from second-hand printing.
- LacBouleaux, on 05/28/2009, -1/+13Why the hell would anyone smoke a printer?
- Rudegar, on 05/28/2009, -0/+12recall a story where a german Xerox repair guy got lung-cancer but it was later proved not having any relation with the toner dust
- pirategonzo, on 05/28/2009, -1/+12Great, I work in a building that use to refill cartridge's and now the air ducts are full of the ***** blowing it everywhere.
I'm as good as dead. - gizram84, on 05/30/2009, -0/+11new jersey already has something like that on the books
- govsucks, on 05/28/2009, -0/+11Having been around every type of printer on earth for the last 15 years from VLF to inkjet to flexo to litho I have to say
Just Damn!
But I smoked for 20 years, so I'm probably screwed anyway. Even though I quit two years ago. My lungs have most certainly been the most abused part of my body.
Besides, the printing industry (or some of it) sees the writing on the wall. Digital technologies like epaper will eventually make printing obsolete in many ways. Perhaps package printing will survive until epaper is cheap but newspapers and books will go digital and it will be better for everyone including Earth. - mason092, on 05/28/2009, -1/+11Yes, because there is NEVER a situation where you need actual physical paper.
- SnowBladerX, on 05/28/2009, -0/+9"and a break room microwave were not main particle sources", WTF? since when do microwaves create particles ever?
- ninsei, on 05/28/2009, -0/+9I'm still convinced I'm allergic to working.
- aramova, on 05/28/2009, -0/+9*don't* inhale the fine print?
*Fixed it for you... - Flynnz, on 05/28/2009, -0/+9que the 65% tax on ink.....you know, for our "health".
- roostersheep, on 05/28/2009, -0/+9Well at least the edges are softer.
- Alwaysandnever, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8I have had a guilty pleasure for years, and finally I now why it has been so satisfying to smoke printers.
- pimperj, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8This is new??
OBVIOUSLY inhaling toner is not going to be good for your health!
Moving along.. - pinkflyingpig, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8No printers for Treehuggers.
- slapded, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8i work at a cigarette box printing facility.
- gizram84, on 05/30/2009, -3/+11it's called personal responsibility.. try engaging in some.
- roostersheep, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8I'm allergic to lemon.
Sorry guys, I'm doing it wrong :( - sockpuppets, on 05/28/2009, -0/+7In my microwave supercollider, that's where. Load a peep into the ejection chamber and watch the carnage.
- HHP2K, on 05/28/2009, -0/+7FTA: " ... The researchers did not analyze what the particles consisted of.
"Particles have been shown beyond any doubt to be a health hazard," said study author Lidia Morawska, a physicist at Queensland University of Technology in Australia."
And yet they don't know what these particles actually are. Mhm. - SpinningHead, on 05/28/2009, -6/+12So, you're not worried about lung cancer, but worried the government might stop you from getting lung cancer?
- rpgmakr, on 05/28/2009, -0/+6"Some printers release almost as many ultra-fine particles as a smoldering cigarette."
Without looking cool in the process. Thanks HP... - inactive, on 05/28/2009, -0/+6I think seeing the price of ink at Staples is more hazardous to my health than this.
- chuckley54494, on 05/28/2009, -2/+8o please shut the hell up. i hate articles like this. i know alot of things aren't good for me, don't drink, do drugs, smoke and i watch what i eat. how parnoid can you really be. you could step out side and get hit by a drunk driver.
- MayorMcCheapo, on 05/28/2009, -0/+6Prediction: this story will get a little play now from the alarming outlets, but not get traction for eight years.
- MargotCross, on 05/28/2009, -0/+6everything is apparently killing us. you know how your cell phone gets really hot after extended use? yeah... we're walking dead people.
- seaaleggs, on 05/28/2009, -1/+7Thus why we should print everything by hand again!
...which might actually be worse? - jason210, on 05/28/2009, -0/+6email - keeping people sitting at their desk fat and lazy since 1994
- NJank, on 05/28/2009, -0/+5"The study was funded by Queensland Department of Public Works and CRC CI PROGRAMME B-2004-033-B. The as sistance of Jason Jacuzzi and Frank Schulze from the Department of Public Works and Dr. Erik Uhde from Fraunhofer WKI is gratefully acknowledged."
hmmm... someone in Queensland want to make a public information request? - Merendino, on 05/28/2009, -6/+11Next we'll get a law banning printing indoors.... ***** government.
- sockpuppets, on 05/28/2009, -1/+6That's what she said.
- evanman69, on 05/28/2009, -1/+6Everything has cancer/aids now.
Our children are *****! - jbmcb, on 05/28/2009, -1/+6Shenanigans!
> Indoor levels reached as high as 625,986 particles per square inch, compared with 178,619 particles per square inch outside the building.
So they are comparing indoor particulate levels with outdoor? Shouldn't they be comparing indoor with printers and indoor without printers?
> Printers were clearly the culprit
How do they know without controlling for that variable?
> That laser printer sitting on your desk could be emitting high levels of potentially hazardous particles, according to a study published today.
Operative words here: *could be*, *potentially*. See, with a bit of grammar fun anything can be a health crisis.
Either the article was horribly written, or the study was poorly constructed, or a bit of both. - iceeagle, on 05/28/2009, -0/+4May?!?!
- lennybird, on 05/28/2009, -0/+4That's a cool sounding phrase, but really not true. Because you may not be sure what you'd have the most fun doing. So a teenager should live every day as if it were his last and get smashed and drive drunk every night, only to die and not be able to have kids, go sky diving, etc whatever?
You do start dying as soon as you are born, I agree, but you can to some extent prevent death from reaching you too soon with some smart, easy habits. Like not being stupid. -
