- pitdog, on 07/14/2009, -0/+32Shouldn't they unplug them instead of plugging them in?
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+32I did a 6-month semester in China. Everyone there is ***** ADDICTED to the internet. And for some reason, no one wants a screen bigger than 11".
- Astark, on 07/14/2009, -1/+20Internet addiction? How ridiculous... I'm going to twitter about this, and then comment on some Chinese sites.
- HamstaMan, on 07/14/2009, -1/+17The idea that you can get addicted to a form of communication is pretty weird. I mean, why don't we start yelling about people being addicted to tv, radio, phones then as well. At least with the internet you got the opportunity to be creative and learn.
- TheHIV, on 07/14/2009, -2/+17Watch porn instead of doing work? Who would do that?
- Rain12913, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10ECT is indeed used successfully to treat Major Depression. People tend to cringe when they hear the term because of what they've seen in movies (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, etc.), but the ECT of today is completely unlike what was used in the 50's. Patients report only minor discomfort, and many swear by it.
ECT has never been, as far as I am aware, demonstrated as being clinically effective in the treatment of addiction, however. The Chinese government isn't exactly known for its adherence to the scientific method though. - TheHIV, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7Are you kidding me? There are so many addicts to texting out there these days.
- kinerry, on 07/14/2009, -5/+11Actually, it DOES work, just not for addicts. It's typically most useful for depression.

http://www.ted.com/talks/sherwin_nuland_on_electro ... - Rain12913, on 07/14/2009, -2/+8When used properly and with modern techniques, ECT has proven effective in the treatment of Major Depression in adults. As I said in response to someone else, modern-day ECT is nothing like what you saw in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It is now done with little or no discomfort.
With that said, I've never heard of it used on children, but that does sound quite disturbing. Furthermore, I've never heard of it being used to treat addiction, although I'm not surprised that the Chinese government is doing this. - mdelling, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Why? People can get addicted to pretty much anything... all it requires is that you place so much of your mental and emotional security in that thing that you have a hard time functioning without it.
- monkeyrun, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5It's not that weird if that form of communication has porn on it.....
- borez, on 07/14/2009, -2/+7They're are doing what? Good lord.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4They're are?
- borez, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Yep, like a pirate.

- Ozzsanity, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Comments like these make me content with my internet addiction.
- Rain12913, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3@ictoan: You clearly didn't read what I said, and it seems that you didn't read the submitted article either. I'll quote my last sentence that you're referring to, please read it carefully this time: "I've never heard of it being used to treat addiction, although I'm not surprised that the Chinese government is doing this." At this point it is clear that I'm referring to the submitted article, not the article about the children that HamstaMan provided.
Also, I'm unsure of how you took "I'm not surprised the Chinese government is doing this" as a declaration that they are a sadistic cult. It seems you're the only one who has said such a thing in this thread. - Mark1981, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4Dr. Marvin Monroe: This is not the way to get healthy!
- chameleon789, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Interesting talk on the subject of ECT :
http://www.ted.com/talks/sherwin_nuland_on_electro ...
I agree it's pretty crude, but it seems to work. I have an aunt who suffered from manic depression throughout her early 20's, and it was ECT that finally managed to cure her. - appleofdischord, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Electro convulsive therapy is a valid treatment for depression. Maybe research it instead of just having a kneejerk reaction.
- DirtyVicar, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Clinics still do it in the US, too.
- kinerry, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2yep. think of it like two connections in a brain that can't quite touch to send a signal, the electroshock overloads them enough to transfer the signal between the empty space, much like regular electricity. the effect is only temporary, so of course treatments have to be regular.
- anonymousmedic, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Modern electroshock therapy is used electively as a last resort with patients who's manic depression or schitzophrenic behaviors cannot be controlled with medication. It's an informed consent procedure that is not done in the same way as seen in "One flew over the Cocous Nest" or any horror story you read. The patients are placed under general anesthesia, intubated, and sedated/paralyzed. They are no more aware as if someone undergoing heart surgery.
Use on a conscious patient involuntarily is barbaric. - randall814, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Seems to me that the monthly internet cost is cheaper.
- TheMachine1, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18384246
"A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the opiate antagonist naltrexone in the treatment of pathological gambling urges." - anonymousmedic, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1No, it's not. In severe, intractable skitzophrenia and cases of severe manic depression it does work.
However, it's done under general anesthesia with muscles paralyzed now in modern times. - Rain12913, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1As soon as that ridiculous horror movie lettering appeared on my screen I shut the video off. It's funny, I could show you a video of nearly any major medical procedure being performed in the 40's and 50's and you would likely cringe at how horrible it looks. You need to take a stroll into a Psychiatric hospital where they perform ECT in the year 2009 and you'll see that it's nothing like how it was performed back then.
- TheMachine1, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1"Internet sex addiction treated with naltrexone."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18241634
You did not even read the wikipedia link I provided it mentions others such as alcohol, tobacco, self-injurious behaviors, Kleptomania. - HamstaMan, on 07/14/2009, -4/+5Actually, you might be surprised at how common ECT is these days. It's pretty sick in my opinion.
Here is an related article

- Y0tsuya, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2Now they will receive anal probes instead.
http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/154950 - JinxCrow, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2It's different yes, but sometimes it can be horrible and leave people even worse than how they were.
I know someone who underwent it for severe depression - now their brain is scrambled and they cannot remember a majority of things and therefore cannot hold a job. Those problems only worsened their depression. - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1DAMNIT I thought I had figured a solution to my addiction... to digg
(read: to porn)
(read: to world of warcraft)
(read: to world of warcraft porn) - charlietuna, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Sure thing. Now they just don't report anyone as receiving shock therapy.
- Fleagleman, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Well, crap. There goes China's #1 game show on TV.
- cawfee, on 07/14/2009, -2/+3Well WoW's offline in China so maybe that's step one right there.

"Chinese Internet Addicts Smart Enough To Realize Doctors Shock Them, Not The Internets"
Kinda long though. :P - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2Direct to the organ "donor" farms then.
- mdelling, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1And by "be creative and learn" you mean flame people on youtube and develop an extremely large ego, right?
- bluesman3535, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2Chinese government at work--Sponsoring hackers while shocking normal users.
- skit4king, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1No amount of electroshock therapy will get me away from porn... in fact it'll probably have the opposite effect.
- anonymousmedic, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Opioid addictions. Because it's an opioid antagonist.
Pharmacology fail. - XTomTomX, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0"INTERNET addicts should stop receiving electroshock therapy because it doesn't work."
So they probably switched to Acupuncture therapy, which, is of course, just as effective. - bratwurster, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Brutal.
Brutally insane. The psychs who sold this "therapy" to the government. - zbeast, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2Whats the deal with china? Internet addiction? What in there mind control society makes them so crazy.
Or makes the government think the populous has gone internet crazy.
Ya, I've heard of the story's of people gaming themselves to death.
I've heard the story's of jail camps for internet addiction.
I've heard the story's of people killing themselves because they could no longer get access to the internet.
Iv'e heard the story's of the government, blocking porn, blocking, information, blocking, free speech. What do they put in the water over there.
Whats making china so crazy? - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1China has not used dialup. Shock therapy is nothing to dialup..
- greenmoonice, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0They are stopping electrosock for something more effective - brass nuckles. Get hit in the head with those babies you wouldn't even remember what a computer is.
- AusJP, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0Defensive, much?
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0They should try vagina instead of elctroshock. I am almost positive that would work.
