- sockpuppets, on 08/19/2008, -2/+19Don't worry Digg will cure it tomorrow morning, and then the morning after that.
- Uncle_Joe, on 08/18/2008, -2/+18Wonderful... now you just need to step outside the house to die.
- eryximachus, on 08/19/2008, -1/+12Actually, it's very insightful. The entire civilization of the Western Hemisphere and modernity as we know it was born with massive tobacco cultivation and consumption. The serious deleterious health effects did not really become a problem until industrialization.
We know from following the epidemiology statistics for snus users in Scandinavia that tobacco, contrary to popular belief, is not in and of itself carcinogenic. If is combustion that makes tobacco carcinogenic, perhaps the problem is not tobacco - but smoke itself. If that is the case, such carcinogens are very likely not unique to tobacco and found in many organic chemicals, perhaps even our #1 energy source (this is of course, a fact). - synystar, on 08/19/2008, -2/+11It's no wonder that the leading cause of death is heart disease. We overwork our hearts worrying about everything that might kill us.
- molotovcat, on 08/19/2008, -1/+8Why do people believe their home lacks most of the same pollutants that are found outside? (I.E., the place where the air inside their home comes from)

- Linkin4, on 08/19/2008, -1/+6effects similar to cigarettes? so now i can just go outside after sex?
- Bennessy, on 08/19/2008, -1/+5Hey, now that we established we're all going to die, who wants a cigarette?
- AJoseph, on 08/19/2008, -0/+4Yep, they finally said it: breathing causes cancer. Saw that one coming.
- Spektr4, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3lung cancer is highly fatal, while nut cancer is higly curable. You might want to rethink that.
- ZenMojo, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2Almost as bad as dihydrogen monoxide? I hear that ***** dissolves metal.
- cuoops, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2source - http://portal.acs.org/portal/acs/corg/content?_nfp ...
- Jonh, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2No need to go outside. Free radicals can enter houses too.
- FiestyPumpkin, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1I would hardly call it new. Why do you think people who have never smoked get lung cancer? People complain about second hand smoke, but look at everything else that it spewed into the air in massive amounts on a daily basis. Pollutants from factories, car exhaust, etc. I get severe headaches and nausea if I have to sit in traffic for any length of time due to the exhaust fumes.
- hiPpymIck, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1if free radicals are highly reactive
wouldnt it be quite easy to chemically neutralize them..
maybe they could even be combined with CO2
/wild optimism - inactive, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Again
- serif69, on 08/19/2008, -3/+4THE SKY IS FALLING!
- iamghost, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1just when all those Truth commercials were starting to resonate with me...
- Rickler, on 08/19/2008, -1/+2I think doomsday is reserved for something a little worse than humans getting cancer from air pollution.
- ryan631, on 08/19/2008, -12/+13So cigarettes aren't to blame anymore? Could those lawsuits be reversed?
- voodoosteve84, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1source (technical paper)
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleUR ... - citydragon, on 08/20/2008, -0/+1"Smokers likely get a double dose of PFRs every time they light up, Dellinger said, since tobacco smoke also contains these molecules. In the five minutes it takes a typical smoker to finish a cigarette, he or she will breathe in an equal number of PFRs from the air and the smoke itself, likely compounding the damaging effects."
So one cigarette has an equal amount of these harmful chemicals as only five minutes of breathing normal air. Surely this implies a cigarette is not particularly harmful. - redskyformiles, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1...Yet another "way I'm going to die" found on Digg...
- atact88, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Free radicals are a combination of dangerous and necessary for life. Your body actually does require the formation of free radicals - it has also evolved a way to regulate them. However, it can ultimately only do so much, especially if you're not genetically programmed to deal with these things very well.
I would hardly call these "newly detected." - KMartSheriff, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1I'm getting dugg down for asking an honest question?
- DestroyFascism, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1So if I suck on the tail pipe of a truck it could kill me?
- walshgopher, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Well Crap. I live in Hamilton Ontario. Anyone?
- Fitzgb, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1So basically because of smokestacks and car exhaust walking outside is now like being locked in a car with my aunt Peg.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -2/+2We're all doomed... again.
- Jimbeu, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1dont ya just hate it when people start digging down or up without reading what a comment is really saying or has just said. It seemed to work for eryximachus so far.
- KyleeJones, on 08/23/2008, -0/+0Fantastic! I'm staying inside next to my air purifier. Now I don't just have to be afraid of free radicals attacking my skin and causing pre-mature aging of the skin, but now my beautiful virgin lungs.
- vat0r, on 08/19/2008, -3/+3This was probably funded by "Big Tobacco".
- voodoosteve84, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1What do you mean this doesn't affect our lives? We already know pollution from cars and industry is bad, this just tells us it's even more harmful than we thought--big deal, right? Well, the seriousness of the harm is important in determining the appropriate action. This makes me want to take serious action (once there's significant agreement on this info, of course).
- Roshani, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1its disastrous wht to do now just come out of our place and die
- vinbot, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1Just another good reason to transition away from fossil fuels.
- reaperhatch, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1what now free radicals!
http://www.oreck.com/air-purifiers/xl_air_purifier ... - grumpyrain, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1No. Cigarettes (or specifically the combustion process that is going on inside the cigarette) is to blame for a significant number of instances of diseases commonly termed "smoking related". The (quite valid) point made by the article is that cigarettes are not the only place we find the chemicals that cause these diseases.
The main problem is how cigarettes are deemed "the cause" rather than "a cause in a significant number of cases". It is subtle, but important to understand. Otherwise research like this will lead to people misunderstanding that the health issues surrounding smoking are insignificant. They are quite significant. There are just other ways to give yourselves health problems as well. - M724, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1Another scare tactic. Ever heard someone babble about how (insert everyday food, drink or object here*) is bad for you? Hell, some even came out saying that water is bad for you. What, you think I should die of dehydration? I'll take the alternative. Also, I've heard all sorts of "study results" that claim that everything from meat to vegetable to sofa chairs to video games to having a baby to sleeping can kill you. If you're so ***** paranoid, why don't you shut the hell up and stop eating, drinking, resting and having fun? Add "speaking" and "breathing" to the list and the world will be a better place.
***** it. Some people consider breathing city air taboo now. Where do we go, I wonder...
* That is not related to fast food, smoking or alcohol. - MasterGrief, on 08/19/2008, -3/+2Oh, good. Something else that's gonna kill me.
- Jimbeu, on 08/19/2008, -1/+0darn it. Posted in the wrong spot. 2X. srry
- Antz0rz, on 08/19/2008, -5/+4Fear mongering.
- cemsity, on 08/19/2008, -3/+1This just in. They have discoverd a new carcinogen, it is named Vita.
All cancer patients had been exposed to this newly discovered carcinogen.
More in the coming moments - Ne007, on 08/19/2008, -4/+2I guess the moral of the story is to stop snorting burning fuels and photochemical processes.....
Whatever the hell that means, but if you do that....you are DOOMED! Dun NAH! - Patzer111, on 08/19/2008, -3/+1Meh. I'd rather get lung cancer than nut cancer.
- Casserole69, on 08/19/2008, -3/+1I doubt that ryan631's comment was based form any greater insight. There are probably few, if any, statistics that are health, pollution and smoking related that exist pre-industrialization.
Yes, snus may not have any strong proof that it is carcinogenic, but smoking cigarettes has plenty of proof, and that is what ryans comment was about. Carcinogens released from other organic sources add to the problem. - Omnianimosity, on 08/19/2008, -4/+1I'm going to sum this up neatly for the majority of people like myself.
http://www.alandwilliams.com/ee/images/uploads/who ... - KMartSheriff, on 08/19/2008, -6/+3My question: is this for real or is this more doomsday *****?
- TyrannousDotNet, on 08/19/2008, -4/+1this is called second hand smoking...
