MIND BULLETS!! Thats Teleknesis Kyle! - wurk4fude, on 05/24/2008, -0/+5Lately, the whole biomedical community is trying to link CMV to everything. It's the 'hot' topic right now. It causes certain cancers, wreaks havoc on AIDS patients, is horrible on pregnant women and babies, and can cause acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. But over 90% of humans over 80 years old are seroinfected and not everyone gets malignant tumors. There's something not right here when this virus almost has a symbiotic relationship with humans for thousands of years and suddenly everyone is pinning it as a culprit. Many viruses cause cancer, with Rous Sarcoma Virus being one of the first to be discovered over 40 years ago that can cause malignant transformation. But it doesn't mean it's the sole cause (environmental, genetic, etc.) Let's hope we can find a vaccine to this one day, but really, this is a far cry from a cure.
- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -0/+4Tenacious T's.....
- kl78229, on 05/24/2008, -0/+4Wow, cancer cures and/or treatment sure gets a lot of press right after a Kennedy gets diagnosed.
I'm sure it's just a coincidence, though. - theblt, on 05/24/2008, -1/+5Yes..I sure hope a medical professional is taking his notes on digg.
- jfsimard79, on 05/24/2008, -1/+4I guess I'm not the only one that read 'Tenacious D'.
- rocko_stazetti, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3It says it stops the growth but why does it not gradually shrink the tumor into nonexistence?
- bigsimpsin, on 05/24/2008, -2/+5Great. Hopefully it will save a lot of lives.
- mymoustache, on 05/24/2008, -1/+3Read as: "New strategy could help beat Tenacious D rumors"
Got me thinking... Obama/Black '08 ? - deskimo, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2The article admits that nobody knows whether the virus is causing the cancer or is merely attracted to its immunosuppressive environment. All they know is that the virus is present in the tumor cells, and by training the immune system to attack the virus, the immune system also targets its host cells, therefore selectively killing off the tumor cells.
- mrallen86, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2Really?
- drizzlelicious, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2This probably won't become a viable approach to treating cancer until its too late for most brain cancer patients today. This also isn't the only alternative treatment method that proves to be promising
Just two off my head..
Cancer immunotherapy..

- Metasquares, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1Because not every cell expresses the antigen, and the ones that do not end up surviving the therapy and proliferate. Antigen therapy of any sort is unlikely to result in a complete cure.
*My group works with JCV, not CMV, so YMMV - but I'm pretty sure this pattern will hold in general. - deskimo, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1I've actually seen a lot of cancer news recently even before the Senator was diagnosed. They are making a lot of different research breakthroughs. It may be that we just look out for them more when a prominent person gets diagnosed and thus are more likely to perceive a coincidence as a pattern...
- Sharky35, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1THat's why I smoke... to keep the virus out!
- bigpawz, on 05/24/2008, -3/+4I saw Gray's Anatomy the other night. That's exactly what they're working on. TV getting ideas from scientists...Or, is it the other way around!????
- DanThe1Man, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Digg needs a Neuroscience section under Science for articles like this one.
- DMCer, on 05/24/2008, -1/+2Mass General is a great hospital, I'm sure the Senator's doctors already know about it. It's not like he'll be the first person to undergo this test though.
- tashtego67, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1This is really cool. My father and grandfather died of brain tumors. Every time I hear of a discovery in their treatment it makes my day.
- CanadaMan87, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1how 'bout the power.. to move you.
- highlymodified, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1A link to NATURE becomes popular?
Fellow Bio-geeks UNITE! - inactive, on 05/24/2008, -1/+1I don't like the thought of any "attacking" going on inside my skull.
- jcannonb, on 05/24/2008, -2/+2This is excellent news. Brain tumors are a wort on the ass of good health. Very annoying and difficult to treat!
- DixonPro, on 05/24/2008, -2/+2***** PUSHUPS
- isaactwito, on 05/24/2008, -3/+2Hey hey hey. Smoke weed every day!
- deskimo, on 05/24/2008, -1/+0Glioblastoma, if I understand correctly, is high grade malignant glioma, the type of tumor that Ted Kennedy has just been diagnosed with. Developments like this are exactly why I don't understand why everyone is eulogizing him already. Let's give him a chance to fight back with the latest and best information.
- chrissku, on 05/24/2008, -5/+3Hopefully Teddy or his doctor are on digg.
- chompysweat, on 05/24/2008, -5/+0We're gonna need this! If McCain gets in!
- OC73, on 05/24/2008, -9/+4It's not a toomah!
