- Bloodwine, on 06/22/2009, -3/+44The south has a high number of blacks (per-capita). Just sayin'...
- 0ceanic, on 06/22/2009, -0/+35it took me 20 mins to obtain this screenshot of the map.

please mirror if possible. - Falldog, on 06/22/2009, -0/+34I have to register to look at the bloody map?
- CrimsonBlur, on 06/22/2009, -1/+29It's also important to remember that it's still a death sentence to anyone who isn't rich. Your friend is in the extreme minority of people who have HIV that can afford treatments effective enough to enable him to have a relatively normal life.
- GregLoire, on 06/22/2009, -0/+25There's a much more politically incorrect way to account for this data than referencing rednecks...
- EMFK, on 06/22/2009, -1/+26The map: http://www.maphiv.org/
- Hetman, on 06/22/2009, -1/+23It is a trajedy but unfortunatly black females are the fastest growing group of people who are getting infected by HIV. Once you consider that, then this is not to surprising.
- Bloodwine, on 06/22/2009, -1/+22You know what they say, Catholics drink on the front porch and Baptists drink on the back porch.
- millardtime, on 06/22/2009, -4/+23I love how people are making typical Digg redneck comments when the article pretty much made it sound like the cases were overwhelmingly almost all minority, calling out African-Americans in particular.
- serif69, on 06/22/2009, -2/+19* You know whats sad this is one virus that could totally be eradicated if people stopped *****.
FTFY - nihilism5150, on 06/22/2009, -10/+26Well there is a higher black population in the south.....
- MonkeyOverlord, on 06/22/2009, -3/+18I know this may come as a real shock to a lot of people, but the South has never been very conservative about a lot of things, including sex and religion. In fact, in the 19th century, the South was "the West Coast" of its day when it came to drugs, booze, sex and gambling which is part of why it was roasted in the North as a land of debauchery (including slavery).
As a life-long southerner, this doesn't surprise me in the least. The culture of the South, once you get beyond the very thin surface, is not at all like the stereotypes about it. - Rikkochet, on 06/22/2009, -4/+19I ended up writing an article for a stats class where we went over bad use of statistics.. I chose the abstinence-only sex ed they're forcing on high school kids, especially in the south.
They are totally honest when they say things like kids who have sex in their teens also frequently smoke, drink, and do drugs. They also say that teenage STDs are spiraling out of control.
What they fail to mention is that the STD rate in US teens is about 5x what you see in Europe where they have a proper sex education program set up for teens.
Look to the southern states where conservatism has a stronger base and you see even more focus on abstinence and it's kind of a no-brainer that this is happening. - perrym, on 06/22/2009, -4/+19in before lame 'redneck' jokes
- RyanBlueThunder, on 06/22/2009, -1/+14And the rate of HIV cases for black/African-americans (96.2/100,000) is 9 times higher than white americans (10.8/100,000).

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/6805/hivprevela ... - alanocu, on 06/22/2009, -12/+24It's important to note that HIV isn't a death sentence any longer, given it is treated. My neighbor, who I have known for many years takes 3 pills a day. He has side effects, but he lives a fairly normal life. He has a doctor's appointment once a month, and even though they can no longer detect the HIV in his system, he is still required to take his medication. There's also a lot of new research, new ways of treatment. There was a story posted yesterday on Digg from Physorg on combined antiviral and targeted chemotherapy
- Jareth86, on 06/22/2009, -2/+13I guess telling horny teens not to have sex in the name of Jesus didn't work out so well?
- SQLDigger, on 06/22/2009, -1/+12You know, if you click on the title, there's actually an article you should really read.
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -1/+11Well come on down to one of our casinos and clean us out genius.
- askantik, on 06/22/2009, -0/+10BTW, you can also get HIV as a fetus if your mother is HIV-positive.
- DoctorFaust, on 06/22/2009, -3/+13What's the cure for outdated, overused Chuck Norris jokes?
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -3/+12HIV/AIDS is ALWAYS going to be much worse in areas where attitudes about sexuality are ignorant and back wards.
I should know. I'm from Mississippi. - zephc, on 06/22/2009, -0/+9Rates (change of number over time) is not the same as the number itself
- tech42er, on 06/23/2009, -1/+9@austroLogi
Just those goddamn whores and queers, right? You're a little over 20 years behind the times, you selfish prick. - aforsberg, on 06/22/2009, -2/+10Remember: It's not racist if it's true.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -1/+9"I'm thinking its not my responsibility, most cases of HIV are brought about by drug use or sexual promiscuity. Those aren't my life choices."
Thanks. I will remeber that next time I see an auto accident. Not my life choice. I like the sound of that.
*****, that's what I'm gonna tell my boss tomorrow when I'm late. - JargonScott, on 06/22/2009, -0/+8It's ***** hot in the south.
- migant, on 06/22/2009, -3/+11@austroLogiaustroLogi
Guess what, anyone can be infected.
Most of the women are infected by cheating husbands that go to prostitutes.
Many people catch HIV in their jobs etc etc...
And all of them should have access to life saving treatment... and the ones not so holy as you should too. - takamalak, on 06/22/2009, -2/+10So fairly common?
- NathanielJ, on 06/22/2009, -0/+7By "a lot of people have HIV", they mean more than 0.7% of people, which they said in the article.
- D3L3T3D, on 06/22/2009, -0/+7The red button to the left of the green button
- altgeeky1, on 06/22/2009, -2/+9The South is no different than any other subculture which feels *threatened* by progress, science, and the big outside world. Insecurity about one's self (or jealous of others) breeds reactionary conservatism.
It's mind control. Keep your subjects uneducated, and give them simple answers to all life's complexity. It's a much simpler and cheaper way to educate if 'God' is the answer to everything.
In this world where a college education is just the starting point, I'd wager that the South and their christian-colleges did more to ship high-tech jobs OUT of the country than any of the post-nationalist hedge-fund libertarians. - altgeeky1, on 06/22/2009, -1/+8NY and California have higher NUMBERS.
That is what we academics call a "sum".
The South has higher RATES.
That's like a fancy word for "percentage".
You would not even need to read the article to get this - it is clearly stated in the headline and summary. - inactive, on 06/22/2009, -6/+13"HIV infection rates are higher in African-American communities, and high minority populations in the South help explain the finding."

I rest my case. - austroLogi, on 06/22/2009, -1/+8does that mean he fails the ad hominem litmus test?
- terrya64, on 06/22/2009, -1/+8Sounds like I hit a sore spot. I'm very sorry about your cousin.Please forgive me.
- angelofchaos99, on 06/22/2009, -1/+8Of course people lie to you about that. They don't want anyone to know.
- nvisible, on 06/23/2009, -0/+7Yes, but if you remove race and just factor economic/education level you will find similar trends.
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -1/+7I suspect that the "down low" culture really serves to propagate the spread of HIV in the black community in the United States. It's a shame too, because the unfortunate victims are the wives and girlfriends of these men who think they are in safe and disease free relationships.
- altgeeky1, on 06/22/2009, -1/+7Actually... his grammatical error was far less noticeable than yours, Bubba.
- 3tcp, on 06/22/2009, -3/+9What the ***** would his political leanings have to do with a (accurate) statement regarding the lethality of a disease?
- blacksoul, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5Sweetie, guys will NOT have any disease you want, just to get in your pants.
- askantik, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5For the record (I live in MS and am about to go to school in GA), rates of teen pregnancy, obesity, and basically all STDs are higher here in the southern US. Education standards and literacy rates are usually lowest here, too.
- kinerry, on 06/22/2009, -3/+8too bad he's also a christofascist
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5Your governor goes missing.
- rocknog, on 06/22/2009, -1/+6You know, I think a big problem is that many people still view AIDS as a "gay" problem, especially combined with the whole "down low" culture of men who have sex with other men but don't identify as gay. Eh, maybe I'm just talking out of my ass here, though.
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -1/+6I moved from cold Minnesota to South Carolina for this s***? First it was giant black snakes and now HIV is running rampant.... what's next?
- LordVance, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5Considering how high the heroin usage rate is in New Jersey, and the Camden/Newark/Trenton "lifestyle" that bleeds into the rest of the state, I'm not at all surprised how colorful we ended up...
It's ***** disgusting how many high school, even middle school kids are sticking needles in their arms these days. -
