- rocknog, on 11/11/2009, -1/+8I think the stigma about mental health treatment in this country is a serious detriment to the treatment of postpartum depression. We're so conditioned to believe that we are always fully in control of how we feel at all times. So many women suffering from it feel as if they're somehow personally to blame, as if it is an indicator that they are horrible people for even having these thoughts. The fact is, though, that giving birth results in an incredible hormonal shift, and it's therefore not surprising in the least that one's brain chemistry might be thrown out of whack by the whole experience.
I know people are all hung up on that we treat all psychological problems as simple chemical issues which can be quickly fixed by drugs, but in the case of postpartum depression, it's hard to deny that chemistry is the primary culprit here. I mean, if someone took a big hit of heroin, for example, no one would say that his change in behavior was all mental, and that if he really wanted to, he could act normally even under the influence of the drug. And yet, the process of giving birth results in huge surges of certain hormones and huge drops in others, and yet we attribute the resulting changes to be all mental, all completely unrelated to biology. ` - Mystyrys, on 11/11/2009, -2/+7I'm a Mom. Don't be so quick to define and limit a demographic.
- cristinamk, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4I am a mom to be :)
- NBCLocal, on 11/10/2009, -1/+5Agreed. Not enough can be done to help these mothers.

So it's kind of a big deal. - Hercules, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3*waits for Tom Cruise*
- tymufc, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Did anyone else think this was going to be another story about weed?
- andyd273, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2When my wife was going through it, before we got her some meds to help, she always had less distress when the house was clean.
I helped with the dishes and floors and stuff, but during the times when we were to busy to keep up on it, thats when she seemed to get depressed a lot faster and deeper.
So there may be something to it, even if it's just easier to be happy in a well organized space. - jster89, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Aha... that's just what we need. Someone who's going to whack 'em on a benzodiazepine and atypical antipsychotic cocktail. Oh and throw in some medical latin just to make it look like you know what you're talking about.
I think psychotherapy would be much preferred. Maybe also add in an SSRI antidepressant if things didn't improve. - scottrothman, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Lucille could have used this
- alex7575, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2This is the prescription my mom got after giving birth to me in the 70s:
Cooking 3 times a day - before meals;
Washing dishes 3 times a day - after meals;
Vacuuming once a day together with dusting... - Idonteven, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2Are you using one of them new hi-tech kitchen computers?
- lead2thehead, on 11/11/2009, -2/+3How about a bathtub without a drain stopper?
- ElAmo, on 11/11/2009, -3/+4Moms make up approximately 0% of the digg demographic... this is frontpage why?
- chockster, on 11/11/2009, -2/+3Seriously. Imagine carrying an ever-increasing weight in your stomach for nine months. Then, that weight ejects itself from your body through your dickend, tearing it in the process. Now that it's escaped, you have to spend every waking (and sleeping) moment clearing up after it thumps out a gaseous turd, or throws up, or generally won't stop crying for a 24 hour period. It depends on you to keep it alive. No pressure- you might be able to see how that would make someone feel a bit down.
For the record, I'm a dude, I have no idea what childbirth is like. But holy hell, it's not difficult to imagine. - mrremy, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Sorry, medical latin is what I am used to dealing with when addressing dosing times and frequencies, it's kind of the medical "thing" - i'm sorry if it seems complicated but there's google if you're not sure of the terminology I used. It's kind of easier for me to write bid instead of two times per day per dose, not everyone is an idiotic arrogant asshat for using pharmacological terminology as you imply.
By the way, what I suggested (an anxiolytic benzodiazapine with an atypical antipsychotic with sedative properties) -IS- psychotherapy. Atypical antipsychotics are preferred as treatment options of schizophrenia, mania, borderline personality, and the like. Benzodiazapines are useful as anxiolytics to calm the anxiety and panic caused by PPD.
Am I wrong? No
Can you add in *A* SSRI? Sure, that could be another option. But that takes time to kick in, benzos and atypical antipsychotics begin working the first dose. - alex7575, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Man, I'm just glad my wife had none of those issues, she was a champ. Seeing her go through pregnancy/labor/breastfeeding/etc... made me look at women in a whole different light. Men are pussies compared to women, not in one's lifetime I'd agree to go through all that...
- nigradamus, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2Have it your way:
Moms make up approximately 0.01% of the digg demographic... this is frontpage why? - Mystyrys, on 11/11/2009, -2/+3No. My gaming PC. I tabbed out of AoC to browse Digg.

- horakhti, on 11/11/2009, -5/+3I've got a cure for postpartum depression: it's called SIDS. All you need is a pillow and an alibi.
- mrremy, on 11/11/2009, -4/+2Anxiety? Panic? Here's some (not so) new help :
Klonopin/Clonazepam 0.5mg-1.0mg b.i.d.
Seroquel/Quetiapine fumarate 150mg b.i.d.
nothing new, sedate them straight - tootim, on 11/11/2009, -8/+3What is it? Birth control? A baseball bat?
Seriously, nutty chicks should not get knocked up.
