- herm1t, on 10/11/2007, -3/+38Next step: forget about "medical" and just distribute.
- edzz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+35I really don't see why marijuana still is illegal. Can we just legalize it already.
- capiCrimm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22it's still illegal because the people haven't taken their right back from the government. It's not the governments job to represent you. It's your job to act.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Vote Ron Paul! He's for legalization, and was rated "A+" by VoteHemp.
- EnglishVoodoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11It's illegal because we can grow it ourselves. Since we can't grow oxycontin, oxycontin is legal and prescribed.
Legal pot gives power back to the people, God forbid. - tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12More about Bill Richardson. Unlike most of the hodgepodge of idiots on both sides, this guy has some real experience, values, ideas, and really impressive diplomatic experience.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Richardson - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10It will be legal soon, if things keep going as they currently are. I think the fact alone that it's less harmful than alcohol, will eventually overpower the political lies around the issue.
Of course we wont get any of our rights back, unless we take a stand and take them back. The whole foundation of america is based on people taking their rights back for themselves. - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11At the very least, our government should have rescheduled Marijuana into Schedule 2... if not 3... by now... I think it's very reasonable and by now it would have been logical to make that change.
Of course to me, I know Marijuana is safer than alcohol and even some foods out there... And the main reasons it's just not flat out legal yet, is because it's such a political issue, they keep it illegal so they can continue to keep it a political issue... Plus the profits involved... they make a lot of money off of prohibition... - BESsy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I take it you have never tried cannabis. . .
- cheesefan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Came close to a reality in Oregon, but voters didn't quite go for it.
I don't know why, it's a valid point.
Not all medical marijuana users can grow their own (Given their condition or other factors), it's unfair. - LeanenStreet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6He is my favorite democrat by far.
- Drull, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Come to Canada and enjoy our premium supply instead, less diseases and more ttp.
- otep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6--
How long were you in (New) Mexico?
A week. No, a day.
Well which is it? A week or a day?
A weekday!

-- - alien420, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5this is just 1 small step toward total legalization i hope.
- sodade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's because pot allows you to look at yourself from the outside and you didn't like what you saw. It can be disconcerting, but you get past it if you smoke it semi-regularly for a while. Taking your freak-out experience and using that as a reason to control other's access to pot is selfish and ***** up. No wonder you had such a bad experience with pot - you are a douchebag.
- krunchy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6This is genius. If this system gets rooted in place the right way, by the time it becomes legal (because i believe it will) then they will already have a state-controlled industry set up.
- alien420, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4and were still waiting on the recreational marijuana distributation system.
- damoek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I live here, and one thing is for sure... Don't move to New Mexico If you are hoping to land a great job because that isn't going to happen. We are one of the poorest states in the country, however if you have a bunch of money and want one of the lowest costs of living of anywhere, come on down!!! Also MM isn't the only good thing ol bill has done for us, he has also brought millions in hollywood industry to New Mexico by offering significant tax breaks to film here... Did you all see beerfest? The scene where they pick up the one team member who is a Male prostitute was literally filmed a block from the theater we went to see it at. Come for the Medical Marijuana stay for the Red and Green Chile...
- AlexApetrei, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6you'd be a very sick man with not much to do other than smoke pot.
- alexkorova, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn't the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit... unnatural? You know what I mean? It's nature. How do you make nature against the ***** law?"
- adikt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I agree..... (takes a swig of bourbon)
- sabach, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The real reason is that they have tens of thousands of bunks they need to keep filled to justify building all those state and federal prisons in the 80s and 90s.
- Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3There are more reasons than that, but the ability to grow it anywhere does threaten some industries such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, etc.
- wishninja, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I am hoping for a showdown. This will force attention on the issue the feds will lose. I was hoping that NM could have dragged it out until the election time was closer. But Gov. Richardson is a very smart guy I'm sure he has a plan that will force the hands of congress to ban the use of the government to opress Medical MJ. Especially if he is president!!
- Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Agreed. I used to help people grow their own marijuana for medical use. Its not as easy as everyone makes it sound, especially when doing it indoors. Not only did the people's health limit their activities, but the information on how to grow quality marijuana is not readily available to everyone and the initial start-up cost for a grow room can be quite high.
- wishninja, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I will go to fight!!
- Jonsblckhwk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Its about time.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5"a mind-numbing, placating drug like marijuana"
yeah, sure... weed will make you totally paranoid and hyper sensitive to propaganda and mind control. alcohol is the placating drug of the masses. - StormTrooperVII, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Bill Richardson is one of the country's best and most experienced governors. He'd make a great president, better than any of his competitors on either side (especially the republicans), with one possible exception (hint: it's not clinton or obama or edwards or paul). I've wished from the beginning that the media would spend a little more time on him and less time on the old tired semi-repugnican clinton, and artificial buzz but substance-poor obama.
- Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2There is also a UN treaty called the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs that makes sure that no one who signs it (including most European, African and North/South American counties) can officially legalize it or claim that it has medical uses.
- sodade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yepp, I did exactly that - moved here with my silicon valley telecommuting job. For the price I paid for my 2+ acre spread in the mountains, I could have bought a crackhouse in the ghetto in Oakland or a crackerbox house in the far-far flung suburban ghetto of pittsburg. It takes me 1/2 hr to get to the airport and I can park right next to the terminal. Over all, the quality of life here is top notch - I could live anywhere in the US and I picked NM.
- tomis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5And a month later New Mexico becomes the first state since the Civil War to have it's ass handed to it by the federal government.
- arenz003, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good for New Mexico. This should have no effect outside the state's borders. The Fed's only responsibility with respect to drugs should be trafficing over the border.
- profpan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I've never tried sewing seeds ... sounds very difficult!
- Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well many parts of the government have approved of legalization, but they are ignored and ridiculed. There were reports commissioned by the government that ended up suggesting that marijuana be legalized as far back as the Nixon administration. They are all buried and kept as secret as possible. I guess what they really need is to keep people ignorant an inexperienced with the effects of marijuana so that you will continue to be receptive to the propaganda that it is a mind-numbing drug.
- kolobcreek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Do they deliver?
- Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When getting access to controlled substances, I would prioritize the access for people who need it for medicinal uses above those who just want it for recreation. I would like it to be legal for everyone, but I think we should work on securing it for people who will literally die without it before I worry about getting it for the people who will just go do something else when its not around.
- sofa0ne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's that way here a lot of places depending on local laws nothing federal yet..
I am all for legalization for medical reasons but I don't see it being accepted for recreational use, for that very reason. - wilsonics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like the fact that Epileptics are allowed to have "the dope." I've found that when I partake in my daily dose of it...it calms my seizures....I am in fact an epileptic, and am wacked full of prescription meds, so hey, why not take this one on too?
I like my"Medical MJ"
I've been taking it for years. Street grade is pretty lame, but hey, maybe this Rx stuff is going to be better.
Maui Wowie! - Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Try pretending you aren't on digg where 90% of all articles are old news, dupes or blog spam. Maybe that will work better.
- Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What about recreational use that is done in your private residence or recreational use that doesn't include smoking?
- Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You see that little 'Bury" menu up top with the "Duplicate story" option? Try using that because no one is going to care if you put it in the comments.
- Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"I can understand that there really needs to be a tight control if this stuff is legalized because it's not the miracle, does-no-harm drug that many people claim it to be."
Prove it. Show me how marijuana is going to ruin or harm society if it is not strictly controlled while some prescription drugs that have more harmful side-effects can be so easily obtained and still not cause the world to end. Opium does not ruin the lives of everyone who uses it. Just like everything, there are some people who can handle it and some who can't. Opium also has medical uses and is not as strong or addictive as some of the pharmaceutical derivatives. - MacEnvy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Pussy.
- level, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0So what about the law for all of us who want to use it recreationally like wine, beer, and tobacco? No doubt going the medical way may be the quickest route to legalization, but lets be honest, the people who use pot for medical reasons probably comprise 10% of the people who smoke it and probably most of them use it recreationally alot of the times as well.
- Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I don't like the death penalty or the defense of marriage act, but I think I would vote for this guy over Ron Paul.
- sprink, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Weed will be legal just as alcohol was once illegal
- oana77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I dont understand why people use marijuana, its terrible.
Oana,
http://benvarim.blogspot.com/ - Phrag, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I'd still rather not. Even though medical marijuana and ending the drug war are very important to me, there are other issues that matter as well and Ron's a bit to 'conservative' for my tastes.
