- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -0/+60We don't need all the specific laws. Just one that says when you're driving, don't freaking do anything else.
- Coven, on 10/11/2007, -4/+57I'd say this is a big "Well duh!"
- nihility, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24So now I guess someone needs to come up with hands-free texting?
- redrock34, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16I'll have to start using MMS while driving now.
- akkibaba, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Isn't driving while not looking at the road already illegal?
The girl who was driving the SUV at the time
a. Was texting, which is ridiculously dangerous.
b. Underage, which means it was illegal for her to be driving that late.
c. Only had a junior license, which means she couldn't have that many underage passengers in her car.
I don't want to speak ill of the dead (they have eerie powers), but what happened there was akin to murder. - freakk123, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Huh, I figured this was already illegal. Guess not. Well, it most certainly should be, I used to do it but kicked the habit when I realized just how damn dangerous and stupid it is.
- jsp123, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Whew, atleast they aren't taking away my games...
- laurarena, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11yeah i guess you'd just speak into the phone and words would show up in text. that's practical.
- sciz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Normally I appreciate letting stupidity kill itself off. I'd disagree with you here, however, because those who text while driving endanger others as well.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9texting while driving is called "reckless endangerment" i think they have a law against that already
- nepawoods, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"I used to do it but kicked the habit when I realized just how damn dangerous and stupid it is."
I'm puzzled as to how anyone could fail to immediately realize it, before ever doing it. - g00ee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Texting is much worse than talking. At least with talking you don't need to look down at the keypad.
- aznhomig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8How is this already NOT illegal?
- scrubadub, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10"If someone says 'there aught to be a law...' there probably shouldn't"
-penn and teller... well penn at least - swordedge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Now this is one law that shouldn't need to be made. Any IDIOT can figure out that they should NOT text message while driving.
- NoOneButMe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7not the carrier's log that they use when billing the person.
- thedarkrabbit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I wish they make a law against driving while being a complete and total moron...
- DatumPirate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8If too much work went into hands-free texting, we'd end up full circle with a phone call.
- davidsmero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I write a book when I drive. Beat that! Oh wait, its not a challenge..
- troymcdavis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Isn't that just reckless driving, which is already illegal? Legislators have so many problems to address, and this is the best they can come up with?
- Weather, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They can name this Darwins Law.
- cyberfelon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Obviously it's not a big "Well duh" to the 66% of 18-24 year olds who do it. I don't think a $100 slap on the wrist is enough of a deterrent for these morons. If anyone thinks that texting while driving is okay, they do not belong on the road. Simple as that.
- mightyzug, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5yes, they deserve to die for being so ***** stupid. on the other hand, i don't deserve to die simply for being on the same street as whatever ***** is goin off the road today.
- Ahnteis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Or reckless driving. Why do we have to have a law specific to every single situation?
- prammy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Texting while driving does not cause an accident 100% of the time. But its very dangerous. Think about it, you are looking _AWAY_ from the road at a device, trying to enter a message on a numeric keypad. Your response time is so low that you will find it next to impossible to drive safely. Like cdnyny said, you only THINK you are good enough to do it.
Stop thinking about yourself and think about the people who you might kill if you get in an accident while looking away from the road at your phone. - Jeffmr1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I don't understand how you enforce this one. How do you catch someone texting? I could understand enforcing a ban on cell use period, but one for texting?
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Riiight.. and then when it becomes twenty-somethings who are inexperienced and bad at driving, we'll get rid of them too, right? Might as well cut to the chase and get rid of driving! lol
You've got to start somewhere and I've seen plenty of people of all ages who totally suck at driving. Yeah, there are probably more teenagers but I'm sure a lot of adults were at that point some time. Heck, I think the majority of people on the road suck at driving. - BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5Given what we are talking about, it should be any activity that takes focus from driving. Cell phone use is a debated issue in its own right, but this one is quite one sided. This is TEXTING. You can't physically do that without looking away from the road. It's simply ridiculous and you have to realize the gene pool is sighing in relief after that incident. This should be about activities that take focus away from the road, and it should be as "illegal" as holding your head down while you drive. It's reckless driving, and it is already covered by what we call a license. You take the license away from people with no respect for vehicle safety, and then they are off the road. Or, they drive without a license and they have comitted a direct offense. Criminal act, courts GO.
Go watch Final Destination. Death doesn't care about laws. If you're dumb enough to think it does, you're gonna spend the rest of your life in a padded room until death gets bored and a pipe bursts and melts off your skin. - prammy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Video plz
- Konrad9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5How is this not covered under the distracted driver law?
- mightyzug, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4i'm not blaming cell phones. i don't think any (intelligent) people blame cell phones.
i do blame the diggtard who can't understand why texting while driving is a bad idea - neuropsychguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Great! There goes another of our freedoms!
*not serious - skubiszm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This will be a stupid law that can never be enforced or proven. How do you prove someone is texting rather then just typing in a phone number they wish to call? And don't cops have better things to do than look for stupid people sending text messages.
This is a lot like that "left lane is for passing only" law. It sounds good in theory, but can never be enforced or proven. - akkibaba, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The driver had a Junior license, and it's already illegal for persons with a Junior license to have more than 2 underage passengers in the car.
- saladtossser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The iPhone should disable itself if its accelerometer detects that it's moving over 10mph.
- TheLD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3In the UK holding a phone changing the radio station is illegal. That is why they are now putting the radio controls and hands free on the steering wheel.
- cozinator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3anyone who uses the term "idk" is automatically up for suspicion.
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@Error601: Isn't that already a law? It is in Ontario at least. The police sometimes go on blitzes where they pull all kinds of retards over. They've pulled over people playing musical instruments, people doing their makeup, people preparing food, and even people having sex... all on the highway.
- bupublue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The difference: Seat belt laws (as they affect adults; kids are another matter) are designed to protect YOU. Laws against texting are designed to protect the rest of us FROM you.
- bupublue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Musical instruments while driving? That's one I haven't seen. What are they playing, the tuba?
- BLish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3why not make it a felony for those caught and cause a car accident? i mean, technically it's wreckless driving which is actually a criminal charge anyways... and if you are stupid enough to text message while driving, you should be eliminated from the shallow end of the gene pool anyways.
/guilty of doing it myself. quit doing it after almost causing a few car accidents. glad i learned. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Who is stupid enough to text to friends in the first place? Why do people think that they can't be alone for more than 5 seconds?
- mavantix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I have a better idea, how about getting rid of teenage drivers?
Sure, it's just easy to blame the cell phones, not the underage and under-skilled drivers on the roads causing the deaths of people. It's not the cell phone that killed the kids!!! - archlich, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It was also illegal for her to be driving after 9pm. But you won't see that in any of those sensationalized articles =|
- prammy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Driving while texting is not the same as talking to a passenger while driving. If you cannot understand what the difference is, then i feel sorry for you.
Yes, this IS driving recklessly, but what this law does is more of a preventive measure. After while your attention is diverted to the phone, you might drive fine, but your response time is GREATLY REDUCED. Again I repeat, you might be able to drive in a straight line (hence not driving recklessly and therefore a cop will not pull you over) but if something were to happen on the road, such as a traffic light changed to red, some kids followed a ball onto the road, you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESPOND TO THAT SOON ENOUGH. You might think you can, but more than likely you will not be able to. With this law, if you are seen to be texting while driving, you can be pulled over and charged. There is a simple solution to all this: DON'T TEXT WHILE DRIVING. - f201, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You realize that they're also protecting the other people you're going to crush with your big stupid SUV? It's not all about you (although you are probably being sarcastic)
- EasY_TargeT, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3what about the innocent person they will hit.
- Protonz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The only law you need is: It is illegal to drive unsafely.
Anything more leads to you getting pulled over for having illegal food in your mouth that turns out to be gum. It also helps to further the police state. - archlich, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Cool thanks. It's not in any of the local papers =|
Side note: how many nested comments can one have on digg? - bupublue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You'll see it on this one. This was on digg a few days ago.
