- rancemo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why not go back to the old gin and tonic treatment?
- dermeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I never knew that that many people are infected and die of malaria. I still remember a German tourist being infected with it and eventually dying a couple of years ago. This was a huge story for the press, but 3000 dying on a daily basis (obviously in developing countries) is outrageous!
- Kazimieras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It could be a vaccine as by the definition of one all it needs to do is contain the antigen that is possessed by the parasite. It wouldn't be hard to do at all. The problem why malaria is so hard to treat is that antibiotics do nothing to it as the parasite isn't a bacteria but another eukaryote cell like ourselves.
- buglord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Before I even read the article, I want to get one thing cleared up here.
This can't be a vaccine, because malaria is not caused by a virus. Its caused by a parasite which is transmitted by mosquitos.
BTW - I was come from a little town on the Rhine river where quinine was extracted in Germany and used against malaria back in the 1800's. Yep, a few years ago malaria used to be a big problem in marshy areas in Europe, too. - Caliente, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2just wondering if Bill Gates had anything to do with the funding of this project.
"The Gates Foundation has committed more than U.S. $100 million so far: $50 million to launch a malaria vaccine initiative; $40 million to a malaria research program at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine; and $25 million to Medicines for Malaria Venture, a public-private project promoting malaria drug treatments." - hoodedrobin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well... Were going to need it with all the global warming... "so what if polar bears die" I don't care much about polar bears either its when there's swarms of millions of insects that suck blood and spread diseases that I'm worried about.
- mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate mosquitoes, they are so annoying with their buzzing sounds and their blood sucking ways. Good to see there's hope to cure the diseases they been causing for so long.
