- Caruthers, on 10/11/2007, -1/+85It's not mentioned in the article but aspartame is marketed/sold as Equal and Nutrasweet.
- BenHanby, on 10/11/2007, -5/+60Looks like they weren't satisfied with this study by the National Cancer Institute:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/265559_soda05.html
"The new study, by scientists at the National Cancer Institute, involved 340,045 men and 226,945 women, ages 50 to 69, participating in a research project by the National Institutes of Health and AARP.
Over the next five years, 2,106 developed blood-related cancers such as lymphoma or leukemia, and 376 developed brain tumors. No link was found to aspartame consumption for these cancers in general or for specific types, said Unhee Lim, who reported the study's findings."
If there is a cancer link, it would have to be exceedingly weak. - RiggenBlaque, on 10/11/2007, -7/+56if you stop drinking diet coke, some other cancer causing agent will come in and fill its place. Everything causes cancer these days
- FyreGoddess, on 10/11/2007, -6/+42Every sugar substitute winds up having negative effects. Sure, they're suggesting Splenda for now, but in another 10 years, we'll be having the same results turn up with that. "Made from sugar", but still not something natural.
Really, just stop drinking diet soda and if you're on a diet, stop drinking soda completely. - Zoplax, on 10/11/2007, -4/+40Soooo, maybe the headaches and disorientation I feel after drinking a diet soda aren't just... in my head... after all.
- Dhalsim007, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27Which shows that, if you pump a rat full of aspartame, he dies .... DUH! But if you roast said rat, the meat is low calorie.
- rhkaloge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19You'll pry my Coke Zero from my cold, dead fingers - just sooner than expected.
- BrokenBokken, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20That sucks. I happen to drink a lot of diet squirt. Now I have to worry about cancer. :(
- CammyBoy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21I just can't imagine a rat with breasts.
- scrimaxinc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17hahaha who drinks diet squirt??
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19What DOESN'T cause cancer?
- CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13i'm in ur soda givin' u cancer
- Neiby, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Google aspartame toxicity. You have a lot more to worry about than cancer.
- brusty, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14They're using Splenda in Diet Coke now. It tastes better, IMO, than aspartame Diet Coke, but the jury is still out on it's consequences.
It's so ***** hard to find an organic version of Coke & Diet Coke. Only one grocery store in Columbia, MO had them and now I still can't find any in Los Angeles at Ralph's, Von's or Trader Joe's. Seriously, why do all the grocery stores stock organic grape, wild cherry, root beer and all that other ***** and NO COLA! It's nuts. Put it on the shelf, and I'll buy it! You can get it online. REAL SUGAR COKE! - Matt2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I switched over to whiskey a long time ago due to concerns over my caloric intake and disturbing carcinogenic trends noted to artificial sweeteners. I'm kind of a health nut like that.
- heebeejeebie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12That's why I recommend Jolt Cola. Twice the sugar. Twice the caffeine. So diabetes and heart mummers... But no cancer!
- MaxxOwens, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10anyone see the amazon diet coke ad a the bottom of the page, ha...
- acrimony, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12On a related note: It was good ol' Donnie Rumsfeld who, while simultaneously serving as CEO of aspartame's manufacturer Searle and as a part Ronald Reagan's transition team, fired the FDA commissioner who had lingering doubts about aspartame's link to brain cancer, and appointed the new commisioner who made sure that it was approved after 16 years of annual rejection by the FDA.
- stratedge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Right, and water = hydrogen + oxygen... so why don't you do us a favour and just go under water and take a deep breath?
It's really sad that people are this dumb. - zeebusboy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14Artificial sweeteners are always bad news - not only do they invariably taste like ***** but they kill you. In more civilized countries people use Stevia, a natural non-caloric sweetener:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia
It is illegal to add Stevia to a food product in the United States - because Stevia cannot be patented and therefore the makers of Aspartame would be out of the diet sweetener business if their brain cancer-causing toxic crap had to compete with it in the marketplace.
Yes, America is so ***** up it's preferable you should die rather than put a natural, non-caloric sweetener in your soda. - ImOscar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I can't tell if this post is a joke or if you're really that dumb.
- DamienChaos, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12I had leukemia before I even started thinking about drinking diet drinks. Seriously, even breathing has a chance of giving you cancer.
Pass me another Diet Dew. - IADTatami, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I've been drinking 6-12 Diet Cokes and Diet Dr. Peppers a day for the past fifteen years. I hope that the stuff's perfectly safe, but I'm 100% behind a reexamination of aspartame. Particularly since aspartame was rejected by the FDA time and again until Reagan got a bribe hungry shill (who went on to work in the artificial sweetener industry) in there.
- arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6im in ur pancrease ***** wit ur enzymes
- Istario, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Arsenic is natural. So is uranium. Aren't those wonderful and healthy things?
- drinkGreen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11what do you do that DOESN'T make you worry about cancer?
Dying of cancer is real close to being written as "Died of Natural Causes" - TitoJackson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7That sounds scientific. I think I read that very statement in the peer reviewed journal, "Im In Ur Resurch Lookin At Ur Pearsons Correlation Coefficientz".
- XombieRobot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Here's an idea for all you soda drinkers, do what I did a few years back, just quit soda all together, diet soda and regular soda are terrible for you.
All the dangers of diet soda are just not worth it, soda's destroys your teeth, the artificial colors stain your teeth, the carbonation eats away at muscle tissue and too much caffeine reliance makes you addicted even more to the stuff. And the huge servings of sugar in regular soda are just way too much. Its just not healthy.
I lost 20 pounds of pure fat in 2 months just from quiting soda alone. Get addicted to pure H2O instead! - Alfonzo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Aspartame is only one dangerous chemical in squirt, look up "Brominated Vegetable oil" and "Sodium Benzoate". These days, people need to be aware of what chemicals are getting dumped in the food that we eat, because obviously the FDA doesn't give a ***** (or is being paid to look the other way).
- IADTatami, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7(fine, I'll play along)
Madness? This is aSPARTAme! - RetroRufio, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7You should probably worry more about the fact that you're drinking something called DIET SQUIRT...
- raitchison, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yeah I'm pretty mush a walking laboratory experiment. I've been drinking Diet Soda for more than 30 years (back then it was Tab), and been drinking vast quantities for 25 (sometimes more than a gallon a day, my "record" is 4 gallons in a single day) and other than a pretty crazy tolerance to Caffeine (doesn't do anything for me) I've suffered no ill effects.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Stevia tastes like a naturally sweetened sailor's dick. It also has some health concerns surrounding it, such as potential mutagenic properties. However, like aspartame, there isn't anything conclusive, just the possibility.
- phunlee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5sugar does that and a lot of sugar will ***** with your pancreas and insulin system a lot.
- BESTenemy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I have an unproven theory. Cancer has been linked by some to lack of vitamin D - something that our body is able to synthesize when exposed to sunlight. Which people are likely to choose diet substitutes? My guess - the ones that live a less active lifestyle, exercise less and spend more time indoors. What if the link is indirect?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Uhmmm...there's been study after study after study, none conclusive. Add this one to the list.
- CaptMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Sunlight is natural. No cancer there.
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4NEVER do "Google searches" to replace research. Of course, many are scared of it. Of course, you'll see a lot of controversies. Of course you'll see a lot of scared and upset bloggers blogging about it. But why not look at recent research done instead?
Neither the Ramazzini research published in '06 revealed a correlation (but it was criticized), and another study done by the National Cancer Institute the same year didn't find a correlation either. - Kenzan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"However, the conclusions from this second European Ramazzini Foundation are not consistent with those from the large number of studies on aspartame that have been evaluated by FDA, including five previously conducted negative chronic carcinogenicity studies," Herndon said in an e-mail.
"Therefore, at this time, FDA finds no reason to alter its previous conclusion that aspartame is safe as a general purpose sweetener in food."
This is just a bunch of f-ing FUD.
Worry less about your diet coke and more about your extra 30lbs of average flab Americans have. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6aspartame is horrible! if only the companys would switch to stevia (aka sugar leaf, no calories, 100x sweet than sugar). but of course then the sugar business would be ruined (we cant have that now can we -.-)
- Darthyoshiboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"It is illegal to add Stevia to a food product in the United States - because Stevia cannot be patented and therefore the makers of Aspartame would be out of the diet sweetener business if their brain cancer-causing toxic crap had to compete with it in the marketplace."
Oh good grief! Every time one of you Stevia nuts gets two seconds to spout off... If this argument even came close to being valid, Aspartame would have put Saccharine off the market, which in turn would have been put off by Splenda... I think it's about time you head on back to Stevia Headquarters and get some new pamphlets, there's no way that they're still peddling that old tired line. - Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Headaches, or even nausea (that has also been reported), largely happen because of low blood sugar levels. Aspartame is not sugar. The body doesn't synthesize it into that -- it only taste like it. People take aspartame-sweetened drinks instead of sugar. The result is very low blood sugar if frequently using this mentality over the days. The problem is not really aspartame, but low blood sugar. The solution is to balancing your diet better, and there's no reason to believe there's a mysterious unfound-after-decades "substance" that actively gives you headaches in it.
- Speed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4brusty, you do realize that you just said organic POP (or SODA if your American), right? Those are two words that don't belong in the same sentence, unless the word or "isn't" is between them.
If you're worried about your health, you don't drink pop, that's the deal - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Stop drinking soda with corn syrup PERIOD. That is, if you care about your health. Sodium benzoate is another culprit in many sodas, a preservative that when digested with ANY absorbic acid (vitamin C) will debond the benzene from the sodium salts.
Benzene is a toxin...you wouldn't inhale a baloon of benzene gas now, would you?
Also, get some damned exercise...nothing works better than working out in the sun while staying hydrated. - Superc00kie, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9I'm so ***** tired of morons who automatically assume that something is bad because it's synthetic. Wether a substance is natural or artificial has nothing but absolutely nothing to do with wether it's good or bad for you, period! This is a ridiculous and stupid superstition that has no scientific basis whatsoever.
Second, all aspartame myths have been debunked over and over again. The study with rats that claimed to prove it causes cancer was a very poor one, because they used a breed of rats that get cancer no matter what! The claim that the FDA was bribed to approve it is full of ***** as well, because many other agencies besides the FDA have researched aspartame and none of them have found any risk. That's a lot of people to bribe, and that all for a sweetener? Besides, the FDA rejected other sweeteners before, and all of those were also developed by rich, powerful corporations!
For the morons who are still claiming aspartame is bad for you, I suggest you do a google search on "aspartame hoax" or "aspartame myths". There isn't a single valid piece of evidence that it causes any disease. It's probably the most researched substance there is and has been proven safe over and over again. - Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Headaches, dizziness, and even nausea, also develop from varying degress of blood sugar imbalance, and as you drink aspartame, you aren't drinking something that the body can synthesize to blood sugar. The problem may not be aspartame as an active agent, but the lack of another. Just sayin'. At least I find this far more logical, because there are few sweeteners that have been under the scrutiny, and survived it, as aspartame. I can't cite a single paper written in the 90's - 2000's that revealed a clear correlation between cancer in humans and aspartame, but multiple that doesn't.
- newsheatdotcom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Fox news flash, people who breathe are more likely to develop cancer than those who don't.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You really drink that much ***** a day? Why bother drinking diet if you're going to down a six pack. I drink one Dr. Pepper a day, sometimes none, and if I'm at a party I'll have more. Every day? Jeez. This is madness.
- Judicata, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Tobacco?
- Darthyoshiboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@Stratedge
Caffeine. You notice that people who are complaining about 'aspartame = headaches' are always talking in relation to diet sodas and not anything else that aspartame is found in, the reason is simple. Caffeine expands blood vessels, (That's why it makes you feel more awake, improved blood flow!) in moderation this is fine, heck it's even helpful, this is why caffeine is so common as an additive in painkillers, but over time at a steady level of intake your body becomes accustomed to the increased blood flow, so much so that if the blood flow is decreased due to a lack of Caffeine... You get headaches! This is because your brain has become addicted to the amount of blood that it gets from the expanded vessels. -
