news.wired.com — A new brain-scan study may help explain what's going on in the minds of financial titans when they take risky monetary gambles - sex. When young men were shown erotic pictures, they were more likely to make a larger financial gamble than if they were shown a picture of something scary, such a snake, or something neutral, such as a stapler.

    *this study, like many others, is one of those things where i read the headline and wonder why anyone needed a study to gather this information. i say its *****, because its already been established. like when you turn on the news and they say ' new study shows that kids who drop out of high school make less money." no ***** genius.

There were 15 college males, which is not a good sample size by any stretch of the imagination. But the outcome seems pretty obvious. People are more likely to take risks when an attractive person of opposite sex is around.

    Of course, they're already implementing this in some ways without realizing it.

They build those places to make it easy for you to want to stay and play (lack of clocks or any sort of visibility of the outside from the gambling floor) and do whatever they can to make you more likely to ante up (all the drink that is offered frequently if you sit at a table).

That supports nothing to me, because it is subjective, and is certainly not scientific to make these types of claims. If this study's results were opposite, you could say "This makes sense because in our hunter gatherer days, the one who took less huge risks had a larger chance of survival to produce offspring."
  • inactive, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1 I think what's going on here is that when you you are shown a sexy picture it takes blood away from the prefontal cortex that helps you regulate self control and thus you are more likely to make bad and impulsive choices. It's hard to maintain discipline through distractions and sex is probably the biggest distraction there is.
