Mutation Spells Bad News for Breast Cancer Patients

sciencenow.sciencemag.org — Breast cancer patients with a mutation in both copies of the NQO1 gene have a 20% lower survival rate 5 years after treatment than do patients without the mutation, according to a new study of more than 2000 Finnish women. Those with the mutation were also four times less likely to respond to a common type of chemotherapy.

  • zspade, on 05/31/2008, -1/+6While it's disappointing that it took us so long to discover what it is exactly that makes breast cancer survival so unpredictable, we now know what one of the major responsible agents for the more aggressive of the cancers is. Finding the cause is half the battle.

Cancer is the black plague of the 21st century. Instead of wars and weapon systems we should be allocating more funds to further this research. It will affect everyone at some point.

  • Metasquares, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1Its resistance to chemotherapy is probably tightly intertwined with its lower survival rate. It's a statement of the inadequacy of our current treatment methods if nothing else. Perhaps it will lead to a targeted therapy in the future, however.
