- Neticule, on 07/01/2008, -2/+32Tell that to a pregnant woman that want a burger ;)
- BirdOfParadize, on 07/01/2008, -3/+5Good question! But if this burger is junk, it is not a guilt of the pregnant woman, but a company who is making a junk ingredients for the burger. Just buy organic stuff, make a healthy burger for youself and be happy! Simply!
- scoot2006, on 07/01/2008, -3/+5You, sir/ma'am, are showing one of the biggest problems in this country: the lack of people wanting to take responsibility for their own actions.
***** off. - sublingo, on 07/01/2008, -2/+4scoot2006: Don't be a jerk. Reread what the person said. BirdOfParadize didn't say the mother isn't guilty of eating crap, but that the fact the burger is crap is the fault of the company making the crap burger. Burgers don't have to be crap, so make your own. It's actually a statement of responsibility BirdOfParadize made.
- coyote1284, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4In that case, it's still be her fault for buying the "crap" burger, instead of the "good" burger, no?
- scoot2006, on 07/01/2008, -3/+5You, sir/ma'am, are showing one of the biggest problems in this country: the lack of people wanting to take responsibility for their own actions.
- Magnolit, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5that wasn't a question
- SammyJr, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4Nothing wrong with a burger. Just don't get it from a fast food joint.
- Fejerro, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5Telling pregnant wife she can't have a burger when she wants a burger 'Harms Husband'
- BirdOfParadize, on 07/01/2008, -3/+5Good question! But if this burger is junk, it is not a guilt of the pregnant woman, but a company who is making a junk ingredients for the burger. Just buy organic stuff, make a healthy burger for youself and be happy! Simply!
- Pottypotsworth, on 07/01/2008, -3/+62Well no ***** ***** Sherlock, who didnt know this?
- dullnation, on 07/01/2008, -9/+3Is it really that obvious when theres been so many studies that claimed the opposite?
- anstice85, on 07/01/2008, -1/+7Common sense: It isn't good to eat like *****, especially when you're eating for two. I wouldn't believe anything else.
- dullnation, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I personally agree with the opints made in this study but to say anything is obvious is a little ignorant.. its obvious the world is flat because when I look into the distance it looks flat!
- Raian, on 07/01/2008, -1/+11So are you trying to say that by my smoking crack...I could harm my baby?? How dare you!
- melissajarquin, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3Unfortunately a lot of people don't know this, or even consider this. In a lot of cultures it is considered starving your baby or not giving it proper nourishment if you don't gain a lot of weight. In those same culture a lean baby is often looked down upon and mother's are guilted into over feeding. I think that those people are more old school than anything and are not up to date on the latest nutrition requirements. They're probably overweight themselves too.
- lp66, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Someone needs to tell it to Jenny McCarthy. Someone gave her book "Belly Laughs" to my wife when she was pregnant—my wonderful wife who ate almost solely organic vegetables from a local farm during her pregnancy. Jenny McCarthy made a pan of brownies every day, and polished it off herself each day. Now she's a spokeswoman for the anti-vaccination folks because her kid has autism. It's sad, but, maybe there's a connection there?
- BECoole, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I've seen enough diet soda addicts with mentally retarded children to believe so.
- sanman, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I remember a girl at my workplace who'd be outside smoking everyday, as I'd come in to work every morning. She was pregnant, and yet there'd she'd be in plain sight everyday, puffing away. Someone asked her to please stop doing that, but she blew up at them. She quit a few weeks later (quit her job, not the smoking)
- dullnation, on 07/01/2008, -9/+3Is it really that obvious when theres been so many studies that claimed the opposite?
- angrylinuxgeek, on 07/01/2008, -9/+7I almost thought this was more spam from the Onion, the way these past few weeks have been going
- phorty40, on 07/01/2008, -2/+7Onion and spam in the same sentence? Blasphemy!
- Seizure, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Well, Onion stories should always come with a warning. Too many people just browse the headlines and dont check the source, and there might be some poor sods who beleive what they've seen and go rushing off to work to tell their friends about the new iPhone that transforms into a toaster.
Edit: Actually, I take back what I just said. I want to be able to make fun of that guy on Monday.

- liquidfirex, on 07/01/2008, -1/+35In other news, jumping makes you go higher.
- Pittance, on 07/01/2008, -1/+14Really? REALLY? No one could figure this out by themselves? The crap that if your gorge yourself on makes you feel like ***** could be bad for your child as a fetus?
- Sultana, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1...That was my thought. Sadly, there are some people out there that have no common sense and to them this would actually be news.
I remember once a study done which said that children needed human contact, like being held, etc. It floored me that this was a study which was paid for and done. Like someone couldn't figure out that a child should be held (sheesh)
But there are idiots out there that really can't figure this stuff, out, sadly...
- Sultana, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1...That was my thought. Sadly, there are some people out there that have no common sense and to them this would actually be news.
- sactoeric, on 07/01/2008, -2/+12And it will cause more harm to the mother because any good stuff that could be obtained from the food will go to the baby first, leaving the mother w/ the junk.
- easypie, on 07/01/2008, -16/+0Food is Food. There is nothing called junk food or health food. So eat what you want.
This study is absolutely rubbish.- DivisibleByZero, on 07/01/2008, -0/+8How'd that bypass surgery go? Was that your 4th or 5th?
- doctordbx, on 07/01/2008, -6/+0How do you explain the people who have a liftfetime of salad and sushi and still need bypass surgery?

- unknownpoltroon, on 07/01/2008, -8/+2Look, humans have survived Feast, famine and eating everything that doesn't eat them first for the past million years, and the last 4000 of those yeas was spent drinking nothing but beer or wine. Is there an optimum nutritional supply for JR? probably. Does eating whatever keep mom alive with a vitamin make a decently healthy baby? evidence says yes.
- 3rdDay, on 07/01/2008, -0/+25Another fine study™ from the Nebraska Institute of the Totally Obvious.
- fr3ddie, on 07/01/2008, -3/+7"Follow your cravings".... can we throw away this stupid idea now please?... pisses me off to hear about pregnant women eating gross combinations of food that are OBVIOUSLY not healthy choices.
- galvo, on 07/01/2008, -1/+15I'm afraid of hungry women.
- Ladymongoose, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Be more afraid of hungry pregnant women.
- webkami, on 07/01/2008, -2/+15You mean no OM NOM NOM .....?
- gobbstopp, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1nope, no signs of it yet...
- sirjeffrey, on 07/01/2008, -0/+23Yes, but denying my pregnant wife's cravings for ice cream topped with nacho cheese would have been harmful to my health.
- phorty40, on 07/01/2008, -1/+6I believe this is called Natural Selection or Survival of the Fittest.
- engwar, on 07/01/2008, -2/+1Not really. People who eat junk while pregnant are stupid.
Stupid people have more children.
Therefore the world will soon be full of stupid, unhealthy people.
That is all.
- engwar, on 07/01/2008, -2/+1Not really. People who eat junk while pregnant are stupid.
- melissajarquin, on 07/04/2008, -0/+28I'm currently 6.5 months pregnant and people are constantly telling me to eat more. Most people do not know that it is recommended to only eat 300 more calories per day, and that is only if you were of normal weight prior to becoming pregnant and with the recommended 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity! If you're reading this article, you're probably not of the population that would never be exposed to this type of info anyway. If most people knew about proper nutrition then such high percentages of developed countries would not be overweight or obese. Share your knowledge people!
- azzythedemon, on 07/01/2008, -1/+12All the overweight people I know are well aware of what constitutes a proper diet. They still choose to eat fried chicken and nachos instead of lean meat and vegetables.
If you care at all about your health, you can find out how to maintain it, no matter what income bracket you're in. It doesn't cost anything to walk to the library and either use a library computer, or ask where the health books are.
Knowledge and choice aren't the same. - melissajarquin, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4I do know a lot of overweight people that know that what they put in their mouths is not good for them, or simply know that they are consuming too much regardless of nutritional value. I had lunch with someone yesterday who ate twice as much as she should have. She is overweight and will probably complain about it, and all of her other health problems associated with it, in a week. It's a ridiculous cycle. The initiative to think about being overweight or improper nutrition must come prior to walking to a library to use the computer or asking where health books are. I'd say most people don't make changes or find that initiative within themselves until they have to. Even when they know they should, those change do not always take place. Hopefully the culture of eating will change and people will start eating to live and not living to eat.

- knm123, on 07/01/2008, -0/+7my doctor said I have high cholesterole - so now I can't eat anything I love.....
And I eat relatively healthy - while most of my friends eat poorly, are over wieght and have no health issues...
You only live once, enjoy... I'm going to eat a hot dog now, don't tell my doctor.........- poidh, on 07/01/2008, -0/+6Well I am your doctor, and I'm going to kick you in the nuts at your next appointment.
- pentalive, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1If my doctor did that, even figuratively, they'd be so fired.
- BECoole, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2That is an interesting observation about your friends.
I wonder how much of that has to do with the diets of their mothers and yours. I believe it must have some connection, even that far along in life.
I notice the same thing - fat, crap-eating friends who are healthier than I. No matter how well I eat, my health doesn't seem to get enormously better. But, my mother was ill while pregnant with me and had a terrible diet most of her life.
- poidh, on 07/01/2008, -0/+6Well I am your doctor, and I'm going to kick you in the nuts at your next appointment.
- leejarratt, on 07/01/2008, -4/+3Thank you Captain Obvious
- eryximachus, on 07/01/2008, -0/+11THis is primarily due to the presence of engineered β-Carbolines that are added to foods in order to increase sales. These substances primarily interfere with dopamine reuptake and are addictive. Like with cocaine, once you've tried it - you'll always crave it on some level. The engineered flavor enhancers are particularly difficult to digest (this was a design goal), so I'm not surprised it's passed through to the baby.
Still though - as the crack baby epidemic has taught us - it's not always as clear cut as studies would have us believe. Quite a few children born to cocaine addicts are messed up, but most aren't. I imagine that is the same story here.- Areiadebondi, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Beta-Carbolines are naturally produced in the human body and found in plants and animals. So whats so much worse about the synthetic ones? Structure? Dosis in Food? Any studies on this?
- poidh, on 07/01/2008, -0/+16In other news, researchers have suggested that stabbing yourself in the head could lead to long term brain damage or even death.
- rhabd0mancer, on 07/01/2008, -2/+5Should pregnant women who eat junk food be charged with child endangerment?
- pentalive, on 07/01/2008, -2/+1Only in a liberal nanny state.
- rhabd0mancer, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Or maybe a christofascist state.
- melissajarquin, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0They should raise taxes on food that contain over a certain amount of calories or saturated fat. I think they did that with tobacco to try and deter people from using it.
- pentalive, on 07/01/2008, -2/+1Only in a liberal nanny state.
- danharlow, on 07/01/2008, -1/+4The fat slobs of humanity in Wall-E turned out fine, so what;s the big deal? :)
- BeforeSputnik, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3If you eat poorly, the person that feeds off of you will suffer as well. Isn't this just the extension of "you are what you eat?" And someone needed to study this because....?
- impei, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2...they got a grant?
- uselessexpert, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5Hey, I don't condone eating junk food, but how emotional women get when they are pregnant, and those hormones are just raging, I will be the last person to tell her not to eat that burger... Not unless I want my manhood ripped off! :-)
Those of you that are married or have children, know what I'm talking about...- melissajarquin, on 07/04/2008, -1/+0Exercise increases endorphins and you can train your body to react positively to many more positive things too! I'd get her to do what you did to get her in this state in the first place. If emotions are kicking you out of that room then maybe you guys need a new active hobby!
- keymanjim2, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5Second hand junk food.
Much like smoking, they've found a way that your eating habits affect someone else. Now they can pass laws that regulate this behavior also. - CherrySmith123, on 07/01/2008, -3/+0smart man lol
- zantos420, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2junk in, junk out
- Thrilltone, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4I knew a family of a woman with 2 teenage daughters.
She fed them their 'favorites' at meals.
They sat at the table and ate off plates but dinner for one girl might consist of:
A Devil Dog, 2 Twinkies, Milk Duds, a bag of potato chips
When the girl's boyfriend would play around and grab her arm,
a dark bruise would appear on her almost translucent skin, within seconds- Areiadebondi, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Except for potato chips i dont even know these foods but sounds terrible. Amazing she actually had a boyfriend.
- Birdie1111, on 07/01/2008, -7/+4Maybe the Democrats should make it against the law for a pregnant woman to eat junk food, After all, they know what's best for us don't they.
Vote the Dems in and more and more of your freedoms will go down the tubes.
I am so sick of these people telling people how to live, what to eat, where we cannot drill for oil. I for one am not ready to hand my life over to these elitist politicians. - PDF84, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1You know the saying....

- cdigioia, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5But surely crack is OK?
- WiretapStudios, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5This just in, junk food is bad for kids OUT of the womb as well. Alert the BBC!
- crapmatic, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3In other news, smoking causes lung cancer.
- liuite, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1mom, WTF
- 101phones, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Umm, I thought it was only right for women to eat like they're from 3rd world countries when they are pregnant. Hmmm, guess not afterall.
- beauley, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2In order to sell food to millions of consumers, the food industry must make it appealing to as many as possible, from the young child to the elderly. In order to accomplish this, individual food suppliers use additives to make their foods taste better.

Are There Hidden Additives in Our Foods? - JayTee44, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0good luck telling an american female what to eat or what to do with her body- they can kill that same fetus if they feel like it.
