- eagee, on 11/04/2008, -2/+18Our medical system is broken. Pollution is rampant. Kids don't have access to healthy foods (like these things called fruits, and vegetables). Is it any surprise?
- slothlovechunk, on 11/04/2008, -1/+11Stop selling candy and soda in schools.
Stop feeding kids hi-glycemic carbs that spike their blood sugar levels, don't get used up, and then get stored as fat. - twistaspliff, on 11/04/2008, -2/+10We're being forced to eat unlabeled GMO foods like lab rats, filled with vaccines containing toxic chemicals, and convinced that CO2 is more important than all the toxic crap that is being dumped into our air and water every day. On top of that, we are being drugged and dumbed down into a mew level of servitude, while at the same time being convinced we are free. It's no wonder why we are where we are today.
- everlast88, on 11/04/2008, -2/+8Yeah, lets keep this country a bunch of heavily medicated robots. When I was 11 my parents sent to a psychologist who gave me ADHD meds and depression meds, when i turned 14 I quit taking the pills. An 11 year old has nothing to be depressed about. I'm now 20 and I'm glad I'm able to feel things like excitement and depression. Sometimes people are hyper and sometimes they're depressed, that's life.
- Br3ach, on 11/05/2008, -1/+7Not too surprising, this is an age where a lot of doctors just throw a pill at everything instead of really getting to the core of a problem.
"Depressed? Take this and get lost!"
, instead of Lets figure out why you are depressed, do some tests, and see if you really need medication for a disorder."
"Overactive child? Give him Ritalin!", instead of 'Maybe hes JUST A ***** KID!"
Kids today have little choice at times when lazy parents arnt responsible for their well being. That is healthy food and lifestyle. It is disgusting to me when you see fat parents and their fat child eating at a fast food chain. - bipolarruledout, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5There is a difference to being depressed and just being unhappy. Most people are unhappy and it takes actual life changes in order to be truly fulfilled rather than just walking through life as a zombie.
- sphira, on 11/04/2008, -1/+6Check into Codex Alimentarius
Dr. Len Horowitz and many others say there are very unsettling reasons for these conditions you mention - - crsnglb, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5Bingo! Dugg for getting it exactly right.
To add on to your comment: get kids to get up and get out. I watched cartoons and played on my NES / SNES when I was a kid, but dammit I still played outside a little bit every day! - spyd3rweb, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5Drugs IN the water, and people are so dumb they think its a good idea and want more of it.
- poet, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4Don't you just love Monsanto and all the genetically modified seeds they sell?
- erikerikerik, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4Also I'm old enough to say "Get off my lawn.."
unfortunately there no kids out side any more for me to yell at and get off my lawn. - aflaks, on 11/04/2008, -1/+5but notice how there has been no increase in cures or vaccines. The medical industry survives on chronic illnesses because they rake in so much money over the lifetime of the patient. It is a crying shame that there are less incentives for corporations to come up with solutions because of the lost income associated with ending a profitable disease.
- nepidae, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4I wouldn't say its the medical system per-se, its more that parents/adults demand drugs for every little problem they have. Its true that polution, nutrition (and excersise) are huge contributors but I really don't think it is lack of access to these things, I think it is a conscious choice to avoid them.
- the2989, on 11/04/2008, -1/+4We're all living on drugs.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -3/+6It nothing to do with GMO food, CO2, etc. its that doctors, and parents are better at recognizing the problem I had undiagnosed crones disease when I was young my mom took me to the Doctor he said it was just gas just to give me a antacid I was beat everyday for 10 year, and sent to school in mind numbing pain until a doctor finally identified the problem. Its the same with ADHD, and Autism the disease was almost nonexistent because doctors put it off as a rambunctious kid or to much sweets, the kid needs more discipline etc.
- gridity, on 11/05/2008, -1/+4Are you kidding me? Organic fruits and veggies are some of the most expensive foods. A 4 oz container of organic blueberries was selling for $7 at the grocery store this summer - that's $28/lb - WAY more expensive than prime rib or lobster!
Fruits and veggies are NOT cheap - not if you want actually HEALTHY ones for your kids - ones that are not laced with pesticides and other poisons. - blitzkriegpunk, on 11/04/2008, -1/+4I am SO not surprised. Good thing they hand out medication to children like they're candy nowadays. Yay! A whole new generation of drug buyers! Now's a great time to make some long-term investments in the pharma industry. Let's cure the symptom, not the problem!
- Barackalypse, on 11/05/2008, -2/+5The chronic disease is laziness and/or stupidity, but once again we're treating the symptoms, not the disease.
- randumbusername, on 11/05/2008, -1/+4kids don't have access to fruits and vegatables??? more like kids don't want to eat fruits and vegetables.
how can you not have access to cheapest and easiest food available.
but no, lets not blame parents. it's the corporations fault.
my mom would force me to eat nasty assed black eyed peas and collards. these days the fast meal with the toy that shuts them up suffices. - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2That has to be a real pain in the ass.
- smotpoker, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2Good points but I don't think there is always a conscious choice to avoid them. These days there are a lot more single parent families than there used to be and most people have to work longer hours to remain competitive/get successful. Both of these factors are also major contributors to parents' choices/inability when raising kids. My mom is a school teacher and raised me alone. Besides working to 10-12 hours half of the week, she also had to pay out of pocket for supplies sometimes when making less than $35k and no spouse. It's not hard to imagine it's a lot harder for a waitress or something working varying hours and making a lot less.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/05/2008, -1/+3Even when your sickness is on account of corporate lobbyism to get away with poisoning the air and water?
Maybe if you're sick of paying other peoples' medical bills you should pay attention to what's going on in your government and try to stop it or do something about it, but then again it's so much easier to just bitch about it on the internet, isn't it? - aflaks, on 11/04/2008, -3/+5Its idiots like you who made me come out today and vote.
- leerayIG88, on 11/04/2008, -1/+2I am a robot. Give me your shorts.
- nepidae, on 11/04/2008, -1/+2Cool, lets get rid of "they" and our problems will be solved! Or we could use facts and not fairy tales.
- eagee, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1People like you have always underestimated how tough liberals actually are. If I recall, we handed you your asses in the civil war. We're slow to anger, but that doesn't mean we'll put up with this kind of ***** forever.
I wouldn't recommend running around making threats like that. That's the kind of thing that will send our country to the tipping point. We're already dangerously close. - nepidae, on 11/04/2008, -2/+3Forced? God damnit take some responsibility for your own actions. After all that has happened (and especially with the financial stuff) how can you still play the blame game instead of fixing ***** if you see a problem.
- eagee, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1This kind of thinking is exactly what's wrong with America. You have no idea what it's like in an urban Area. The closest grocery store is usually miles away with no easy access. They call them "Food Deserts" for a reason.
Fruits and Veggies cheap?! Wow, that statement is laced with ignorance on a level of completely and total dooshbaggery (or at the very least a complete inability to perform simple math). Did you mean from a can?
Anyway I'm not saying that the responsibility is not on the parents, but if the only thing close by is a corner store then you're going to be feeding your kids whatever they have and whatever you can afford. Usually not fruit or vegetables. - bipolarruledout, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1I only give my kids generic drugs.
- someology, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1I agree... whatever happened to talking to Mom or Dad in the middle of the night when you're suffering from a depressive episode and cannot sleep? Often such things run in families, and talking to older relatives about the ways they deal with it can be very beneficial in the long term. It's a valuable exchange of wisdom that you don't get if you just throw a pill at it.
- bipolarruledout, on 11/05/2008, -1/+2Well you could lobby the FDA to recognize aging as a disease and focusing on ways to let healthy people live longer.
- bipolarruledout, on 11/05/2008, -1/+2Wow.
- someology, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1While you _can_ suffer from depression as a child whether you have something to "be depressed about" or not, (personality bent, brain imbalances, etc) I agree with you about the medication. Better in the long run for the child to deal with their own brain and experience the gamut of life than to numb them before they learn who they are. If you medicate them to death before they grow up for problems like hyperactivity and depression, then they will never learn to handle it on their own. You will in effect cripple the natural coping processes.
- leerayIG88, on 11/04/2008, -2/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Chimp_Brain_in_ ...
Exactly. - yeahright04, on 11/05/2008, -0/+0I agree with someology.....
- crsnglb, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1Buried for the run ons.
- yeahright04, on 11/05/2008, -0/+0
Yes, that is really sad to see a fat parent lead their poor child down a road of misery. There's a circle in Hell reserved for people like that. - vaccumpony, on 11/05/2008, -2/+2You sir, are a *****.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -3/+3One of the propositions is about building more hospitals for children. I know this tugs on the emotions of every parent out there, but I had to vote no. Personally, I think it's the doctors that are making our children sick.
- inchrnt, on 11/04/2008, -2/+2Chronic disease is a huge business for big pharma.
If you were big pharma, what would you do?
Would you use your profits for the good of mankind? No, you wouldn't.
You'd lobby the ***** out of government to keep people fat and unhealthy. Those are your best customers. You'd focus on medications that help people cope with their condition and avoid prevention and cure. - scamper22, on 11/05/2008, -2/+1yeah, now if we actually had freedom in the medical system where nurse practitioners were allowed to see patients on their own like in Seattle... since they are more often paid on salary, they would have more of an incentive to provide good managed care.
But yeah.... leave it in the hands of doctors and big pharma, and you get what you deserve. - scamper22, on 11/05/2008, -3/+0tell you what.
you study bio-chemistry, get amazing grades, then go study at some university and discover all those vaccines unfettered by the evils of corporations. - scribat, on 11/04/2008, -7/+1………………….._,,-~’’’¯¯¯’’~-,,
