(Not Safe For Lunch) - scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -2/+145Whenever something bad happens to you, you think: "this will be great on my blog!"
If something REALLY bad happens, you think: "I wonder if a related domain name is free?" - HarryBauzonia, on 10/10/2007, -7/+115Some of the damage could have been minimized if his group had been carrying a snake-bite kit, and they'd been able to remove most of the poison.
I had a copperhead bite my boot last Saturday (the fangs didn't penetrate the boot), but I was carrying a snake-bite kit just in case something like this happened.
They're cheap. Here's the one I use:

Also, I keep a pack of cigarettes with me while hiking. The dry tobacco does an amazing job extracting venom of scorpions, wasps, etc.
I hope this helps someone. - cadams, on 10/10/2007, -3/+88They hate us for our freedoms.

That's exactly why I don't camp. ***** Nature. - miriclaire, on 10/10/2007, -2/+45I feel so sorry for this kid. As a mother of a thirteen yr old boy, I can only imagine how his parents hearts were breaking watching him go through this. He's very brave to have shared it, as well.
- Smurph0404, on 10/10/2007, -0/+41dugg for the website being called www.rattlesnakebite.org. I love the internet.

- Mykal73, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26Rattlesnake poison dissolves flesh. There was a show on Discovery called anatomy of a snakebite where they compare the differences in different types of snakebites.

- bs3arch, on 10/10/2007, -7/+26Wow, I'm going to think twice before going on the everglades snake tour with Manny Puig & David Weathers!
- kelpdip, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Interesting product.

/brave kid and a serious medical accomplishment - jocknerd, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17 Why does this make you hate snakes? Maybe should fear them, but there's no reason to hate them.
- nighthwk1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12So the recommended emergency treatment is no treatment? What should one do if a hospital isn't available?
- Mysrt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12get a job you sparkling wiggle
- mjvincent, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Slicing the snakebite and trying to suction out the venom is not the recommended treatment anymore. Tourniquets and ice are also not recommended... Immobilization is recommended and quick medical response. This article explains more about recommended dos and don'ts, but you are unlikely able to 'suck' out an effective amount of venom once bitten and could cause more damage than good... http://www.wmcnet.org/physicians/pdfs/Erk_JA05.pdf
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11They only take a thin layer, it grows back.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13You have a firm grasp of the obvious.
- ldkronos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10For normal skin graft, I believe they use something sort of like a grater and it shaves off a thin layer of skin that looks sort of like cheesecloth. The part they take it from is no worse off than if you had taken a fall and slid across some concrete. Probably hurts, but heals perfectly.
However, in this case it doesn't look like a simple skin graft. It really looks like they cut out a thick square of skin and patched it onto his hand. I've never seen that before. - norman619, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11well they don't fillet a kid's arm for the hell of it.
- TheDragon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Two of four people commenting on this comment apparently just don't get the horrible horrible joke.

doctored

hahaha so bad - omnirusa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Not everyone has alot of money, and even though his insurance covered the costs, im sure they still probably had alot of costs of their own from it.
Not to mention the kid was 13 at the time, making him 17 now. I am 17 now and $5 a month is alot to someone without a job. -
