- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -11/+42BREAKING NEWS: It isn't only the Chinese who sell you mud, ***** and poison to make a profit. American companies do it too!
Buy food, ***** the packaged stuff. ***** popcorn is like a buck a bag. throw it in a ***** pot with some oil and butter and watch it pop.
You dont need the sodium biwhatever the *****, or ***** chemicals or olestra makes your ass leak *****. Buy food, and ***** these corporations and their fake everything. Its killing you and giving you cancer. - Darkhowling91, on 10/10/2007, -8/+37Nothing is good for you, get over it and enjoy your life.
Be a rebel, eat a freshly popped bag of popcorn. - DjOverEZ, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24I like turtles.
- chrisbtig, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22Just don't eat "two or more bags" of microwave popcorn every day like the moron in this story did.
- diggdowner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17You forgot to add in the word "*****" in your second sentence, so I gotta digg you the ***** down...
- D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18less swearing, but you have a point...
- Fracture98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Well, if the diacetyl doesn't kill you, the polytetrafluoroethylene might...
- Renton, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15And how does saturated fat give you a lung disease?
- Renton, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13That's some ***** good advice!
- DeskFlyer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Everything in moderation......
- Sautechef, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Why do we need all of these chemicals in our foods? Diacetyl? WTF? Leave it to corporations to ***** up something simple like popcorn. Companies should be concerned about making a quality product and not about increasing their bottom line.
- Fracture98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Who do you think you are? Clinton?
- Poco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9This comment makes me want to buy more popcorn.
- DannySpace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8***** it! Hello again, Cigarettes!
- firedrillduckie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I didn't find his comment to be offensive.
Dumb, but not offensive.
Oh, and the date on the story is from two days ago. Very old indeed. - onClipEvent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7don't forget to breath deep!
- D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I'm not worried....
Worst case scenario I die young, but had a delicious life.... - consonance, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Why should we not be able to eat popcorn and keep our lungs intact? Oh, I forgot, everyone knows that eating lots of popcorn will give you a rare, lung-destroying disease that's only found in factory workers improperly exposed to dangerous chemicals!
Welcome to Digg, where we blame the victim. - bdbr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7"Nothing is good for you, get over it and enjoy your life."
Some things are good for you. They generally don't come from factories, though. They definitely don't come from factories with health problems! - tomkroening, on 10/10/2007, -0/+52 bags a day is a bit ridiculous. It probably doesn't cause enough harm in moderation. I think there is a bigger problem in movie theaters! I worked at one for 5 years and I can tell you that they use butter salt which contains diacetyl. Many popcorn poppers in theaters do have ventilation systems - however not many of them vent to the outside but just pass through some filters.
- bitcloud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And hold the companies that sell us diacetyl as butter responsible.
If we buy something, we expect it to be what we were told. If not you're ***** criminally responsible. - supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7What if it was Coca-Cola. Are YOU a moron for drinking two cans a day?
Put the blame where the blame is due. Not on the guy who likes popcorn, but on the corporation that sells poison and calls it popcorn. - teethman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I thought the FDA was supposed to protect people from this *****. No? Hmmm.
- Fracture98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The first time I was offered "golden topping" was the last time I ate popcorn.
- Sputs, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10"two or more bags of microwave popcorn he consumed every day." He ate 2 bags of popcorn a day and something bad happened to him?
Holy ***** batman. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Wahaa - something to tell those naggers.... they say you shouldn't smoke, its bad for you... we say "So is popcorn you hypocrite!"
- jonnyeh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Actually, over consumption of water is called water intoxication, and it's different from drowning. A woman died a few months ago on a radio contest when trying to win a Wii by drinking too much water.
- gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Original youtube link because kosmix is a spammer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXDstfD9eJ0 - orangealice, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Don't inhale.
- h4mx0r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4dugg for "ass leak *****"
- bitcloud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I agree supermanred.. your comment couldn't be any more spot on... ANY consumption of diacetyl is overconsumption...
why the ***** are we being sold diacetyl as butter? USE BUTTER! - supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -12/+16No, its the dangers of diacetyl. Making popcorn, liking it a lot and breathing in the nice smell is all part of liking popcorn. You shouldnt get a ***** lung disease from eating goddamn popcorn, problem is this ***** is just mud poison and ***** so that the company can make 40 cents more profit per bag. ***** these corporations killing us to make a few extra million dollars so they can drink the better wine and own the bigger house.
***** THESE PEOPLE. Its not your fault for eating it, its their fault for selling poison as food in order to profit from it. THAT IS EVIL, and ***** them. Boycot these ***** and wake up from your ***** American dream.
"Thats the problem with the American dream, you can only have it if you are asleep" - George Carlin. - teethman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4People commonly know drinking soda is bad for you, but breathing in diacetyl fumes? ***** that *****.
- BlackOp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Piss off spammer.
- bitcloud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's like fluoridated water...
They put chemicals in something harmless and it's all fine until someone drinks 5 litres a day... suddenly their bodies are chemical repositories...
Here's an idea - STOP PUTTING TOXIC CHEMICALS IN OUR FOOD AND DRINK. We can deal with over consumption without the added deterant of POISONOUS ingredients. - Encablossa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not relating to cancer? Wow
- budser, on 10/10/2007, -14/+17"two or more bags of microwave popcorn he consumed every day." According to NY times he was in the habit of breathing "in the steam from the just-opened package." The saturated fat in popcorn does more harm than the diacetyl. This is a story about the dangers of overconsumption, not the dangers of diacetyl.
- rivasj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Oh, man...that's totally what killed Orville Redenbacher.
- djtrypt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3just dont smell the popcorn, that seems like an obvious solution. and im sure our FDA isn''t gonna give two shyts either
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Exactly 79.
- bremstrong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Avoiding microwave popcorn isn't really going to diminish quality of life. Especially if the popcorn makers remove this flavor chemical and replace it with one that doesn't require their factory workers to have their lungs replaced.
I remember reading a WSJ story about the popcorn factory workers being on the organ transplant lists about five years ago. It was fun to bring it up in conversation because it sounded so unbelievable. - rmtatum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The popcorn contained diacetyl, a.k.a. 2,3-butanedione. Looking up the material safety data sheet shows that the chemical is toxic.
http://ptcl.chem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/BU/2,3-butanedione.html " Harmful if swallowed. Skin, eye and respiratory irritant. (Note that there is some evidence that chronic exposure to this compound may contribute to the development of the potentially fatal condition bronchiolitis obliterans. See, for example Eur. Respir. J., 24: 298-302 (2004).)" Corporations are intentionally poisoning people. The globalists eugenicists want to exterminate mankind. - Flinty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3"Submitted: 23 hr 57 min ago"
I wonder how many people have had microwave popcorn since then.. - teethman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'll eat it, but i'm not gonna sniff it.
- NitroNeo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2it was the chemicals used for butter flavoring NOT THE POPCORN.
dugg down, INACCURATE !!! - teethman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Buy ***** organic ***** and eat fruits and vegetables. Its not rocket science, its the food pyramid.
- bremstrong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've heard that the asthma rates in children have been increasing substantially. Perhaps this contributes?
Recent studies have also pointed at a strong link between swimming in chlorinated pools and asthma. Ironic since swiming is often recommended for children suffering from asthma...
http://swimming.about.com/od/allergyandasthma/a/cl_pool_problem.htm - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2wow, if its not good to smell, it can't be good to eat. Is that chemical really needed for microwave popcorn? strange
- bdbr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Part of the magic of getting popcorn to pop fairly well in a microwave, I expect. Not that popping it in plain oil is terribly healthy either...
- bitcloud, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3overconsumption of anything is deadly....
accidental overconsumption of toxic chemicals is deadlier (and tantamount to manslaughter) -
