- alapoet, on 07/02/2008, -2/+75As a legal medical marijuana patient, I can tell you that these amounts are not, as law enforcement would have you believe, at all excessive.
In fact, many patients and especially caregivers to multiple patients say (and I'm inclined to agree) that these amounts are definitely on the low side, and expose lots of people who are legitimate medical users and caregivers to arrest simply for possessing and maintaining an adequate supply.
Washington's medical marijuana law says that patients are to be allowed to possess an amount equivalent to a "60-day supply"; the task of the Department of Health was to explicitly define exactly how much that would be.
Under these rules, 18 of the 24 plants must be "immature," defined as under 12 inches in height and not in the flowering stage. Six of the plants can be "mature," i.e., any size and flowering.
After the DOH consulted with doctors, caregivers, patients, law enforcement and citizens in public hearings, in the first draft of its recommendations, it recommended 35 ounces and a 100-square-foot growing space. Gov. Christine Gregoire thought that was too much because law enforcement told her so. Pot-hating cops wanted to allow no more than three ounces and three plants.
Gov. Gregoire sent the DOH back to the drawing board, they had another meeting where law enforcement was much more heavily represented, along with one doctor and one medical marijuana advocate, and these reduced numbers are the "compromise" result of that meeting. - mecharabbit, on 07/02/2008, -3/+34We in Michigan will be voting in November to allow medical marijuana. Wish us luck!
- harrisbradley, on 07/02/2008, -5/+242.5 lbs is not excessive if you cook with it instead of smoke, which a lot of people would prefer to do. Also, I shake my fist at anyone who tells me I am not allowed to do ANYTHING because it is excessive unless it is my parents because I have to deal with that, because they earned that right in my eyes. Excess, in these terms, is opinion. We are not talking about too many widgets on a shelf, or filling a glass until it over flows. It is a personal question, which is "How much weed do I need" and "Do I have enough weed to meet my personal preference." The government has never, and will never know the answer or get the answer right.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -1/+18You cant expect any sense out of people who are trying to ban Flintstones vitamins. The people calling the shots don't want people to grow their own medicine, and this will never change until the FDA is restructured(payolla from Big Pharma) and the drug war is called off.
- NikoKun, on 07/02/2008, -0/+16He just explained why someone might need that much... Yet you just ignored it?
There are such things as Caregivers, who grow medical marijuana for multiple people... And these amounts aren't enough for multiple patients... Or at least shouldn't apply to caregivers.
On top of that, some medical users refuse to smoke it, so they cook it into foods instead... And this process requires a LOT more Marijuana. - howdareyou, on 07/02/2008, -6/+19Jesus ***** Christ it's just a plant, if I want to grow it in my garden please leave me the ***** alone. I wish all these NRA gun nut republicans would get behind my freedoms to grow a god damned plant. Jesus *****. *****!
- lambda, on 07/02/2008, -3/+16"Our founding fathers would have never tolerated any of this crap. For God's sake, they were blowing peoples' heads off because they put a tax on their breakfast beverage. And it wasn't even coffee.”—Dennis Miller
- NikoKun, on 07/02/2008, -2/+14Ever tried to cook with it? That process and other extraction methods, require a LOT larger quantities than what you might be used too.
Many patients either don't like to smoke it, or are unable to, due to their conditions. - NikoKun, on 07/02/2008, -0/+10It might be enough... And I certainly wont complain, although I hope they consider the following:
There are some situations where I would say more should be allowed. Such as for caregivers, that grow it for multiple patients... Because not all patients have the means to grow it themselves...
Or for patients who can't smoke, and have to cook it into food instead, which requires a lot more quantities. - btschul, on 07/02/2008, -7/+17This whole thing is so ***** ridiculous. If someone who is dying finds some relief in smoking a ***** plant, let them. Jesus christ, all this ***** about how the US tortures and waterboards people, what about the people they are torturing by NOT letting them have relief from their pain? You think some wheelchair bound cancer patient is gonna get high and run over someone? ***** ridiculous. If there is a chance that this article (http://digg.com/politics/RON_PAUL_IS_STILL_ELIGIBL ... is correct, I would advise everyone who supports medical marijuana to look in to how they can help get Ron Paul elected, as he is the only candidate that really and consistently has called for the legalization of medical marijuana.
- subterfuge, on 07/02/2008, -0/+91. true vaporization is more efficient than smoking
2. vaporization is not smoking - bpm2000, on 07/02/2008, -2/+11Are you a patient? No? Then wtf do you know?
The immature/mature thing is stupid as well. What if you come into a sweet crop of females, or get feminized seeds? 18 immature plants will then become 18 mature plants. Are you supposed to just kill 12 of them?
Come'on Seattle, represent the NW dammit. Our brethren down south in Cali are fast out pacing us here. - lambda, on 07/02/2008, -0/+7"Our founding fathers would have never tolerated any of this crap. For God's sake, they were blowing peoples' heads off because they put a tax on their breakfast beverage. And it wasn't even coffee.”—Dennis Miller
- subterfuge, on 07/02/2008, -0/+7and, coincidentally, he is also a DOCTOR
- Pronoiac, on 07/02/2008, -2/+9One step at a time. Unfortunately sweeping federal policies will not change until these kinds of things are passed on state levels. Cheers to Washington for stepping up. Once people see that medicinal marijuana users are not morally depraved fiends who wander the streets hijacking Frito Lay trucks, people will start to come to their senses and our personal liberties will be restored.
- ericjohnson0, on 07/02/2008, -6/+13Well it would be nice if California followed suit so the DEA wouldn't be raiding the medical marijuana centers anymore.
http://thesaloon.net/blog/_archives/2007/1/20/2667 ... - alapoet, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6@ Bots: 24 ounces isn't 2.5 pounds. It's 1.5 pounds. Check your math.
Beyond that, as other repliers have noted, medical use of marijuana isn't one-on-one comparable to recreational use.
The primary reason with medical use is symptom alleviation. That often takes more than it takes for a casual user to get high on. - cvelusc, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6The problem I see facing this poster is that it's foolhardy to compare recreational and medicinal needs. Someone that is suffering from ALS, AIDS, or neuropathic pain (myself, from a spinal cord injury) will be affected differently by marijuana than a recreational user. For a medicinal patient, the effects of marijuana will have an impact on existing maladies which marijuana is proven to be effective. However, for a purely recreational user those maladies don't exist, and much less marijuana will be needed for that person.
With that said, I would like to finish by saying that not everyone is alike and therefore their needs differ. To tell someone that the amount of medicine they take is excessive is simply inappropriate. - Buttercup, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6... california passed their medical marijuana law before washington... and DEA is federal, so it "overrides" each individual state law. so really as far as the DEA is concerned these laws don't mean *****.
- twitchr, on 07/02/2008, -2/+8Troll
- munna80, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5For anyone who says 24oz for 60 days is on the low side, either you've been smoking ***** grass, or you have no clue waht you are talking about at all. 11 grams of good weed daily will leave anyone completelly stoned 24/7.
These amounts are very generous in my opinion. - tnoy, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Its already legal in California. Its still illegal on a federal level. The DEA is busting the medical marijuana centers for violating FEDERAL law. The DEA can (and will) do the same in Washington.
The only thing that can stop it would be a Supreme Court ruling or a new federal law explicitly allowing it. - Adamlite, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Good ***** luck!
Do you know if they've run opinion polls yet? - inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Christ boy, you must've gotten an A+ in DARE. Oooh, it's a DRUG, it's scary! Seriously, grow up. The fabric of society isn't going to fall apart because of marijuana.
- mecharabbit, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5According to one poll done by independent survey group showed that 67% of voters are in favor with 28% opposed, 5% undecided. Pretty promising numbers, I'd say.
- ashfish, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4And so what if they are from "potheads?" What's wrong with wanting to get high? People do it all the time in different forms with alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes, consuming sugar, etc. We are only seeking the same treatment every other "drug" gets. Hell, even illegal drugs on the same level as marijuana have medicines made out of them that are legal. Also, that article you linked is pretty interesting. Its also interesting to note that cannabinoids have been linked to having potential anti-cancer/tumor effects as well (http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/3254.html) ... It would do you some good to stop drinking from the propaganda well.
- Adamlite, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Are you asking us to give up on the progress we seek? Put yourself in my shoes and consider how you would feel if I asked you to give up trolling.
It's a cause many of us believe in, and activism can take the form of topic-related submissions to Digg. If you don't like it, bury it - there will be plenty of us to digg and negate your vote. - revjustin2, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4I don't think that's how democracy works. I think the idea is that if you don't like a law, you have the right to discuss it openly and work toward changing it.
Marijuana is a "drug" indeed, but so is chocolate. Get over that. - Elderon, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4It's people that think like you do that is wrong with this country. Laws are not set in stone, they can be removed, they can be changed. Look at alcohol. At one point in time, it too was illegal and it's effects are far worse than cannabis. whether or not you are for legalizing cannabis or not, the attitude of "tough *****, don't like it GTFO of the country" seems wrong to me.
It's all about the personal responsibility, even if it kills me. - cambob76, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Why am I a douchebag? Maybe you're a douchebag for calling people douchebags for no good reason.
- wildfire, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4I thought my court records of that incident were destroyed!
- 0xbaadf00d, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4It is decriminalized completely in Ann Arbor, and I haven't heard too much about DEA troubles there.
- chrisaug18, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5I don't think you understand the word exponentially
- cambob76, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Yeah, I thought about that after posting... My first reaction was from a pothead's point of view and maybe a cop's point of view.
- Firehed, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Where on earth do you get 2.5lbs from 24oz?
[wisecrack 'stop doing math while high' joke goes here] - cambob76, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3I tried one of those. It was cool... but I was able to smoke the leftovers and still get high.
- zbeast, on 07/02/2008, -6/+9I always use a vaporizer that tends to waste a lot of pot.
But it's the safer way of smoking. 2.5 lbs would be just fine.
- jdago, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3LETS ELECT RON PAUL
- Rustymetal, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4DRUGS are man made, Marijuana was not created by man.
- FLarsen, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3If there's a chance kids may find your weed, protect it better.
What if ... wait ... OH MY GOD, there's gasoline in the garage and the door was open for quite a while earlier! What if some kid found it and started sniffing it! We must outlaw gasoline at once! - Muyoso, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4Believe me, its not hard in the slightest, unless you are trying to make it hard on yourself. Once you get into hydro and *****, you are asking for more trouble than its worth. A simple soil grow is both easy and requires almost no work. You will royally ***** your first attempt at growing, everyone does. The second attempt will be easy. Set your timers, figure out your watering schedule, and you are done. Takes less than 5 mins a day of work, until of course, its harvest time.
- djfatalerror, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4They are ***** dying is 'whats going on'. It's about how much they need to feel some relief, not how to feel "***** wrecked all the time".
- Muyoso, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3I agree. What happens if someone is caught with 1.6 pounds?
- mecharabbit, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3It's called the Michigan Medical Marijuana Initiative, as far as I know.
- bman85, on 07/02/2008, -2/+4Bull, i have smoked everyday for 8-9 months now and can still get high with one bowl.
- revjustin2, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2@kywirelessguy - I call partially call ***** on you. You ever smoke regularly over any period of time?
My experience has shown that new smokers usually have some form of tolerance at the beginning which is then gone after the second or third attempt (some attribute this to inexperience with the actual smoking process). Then, if one becomes a regular smoker, tolerance begins to increase not necessarily in terms of resistance to potency (it takes more/stronger stuff to get high) but in terms to duration. In other words, over time, one tends to stay high for shorter periods of time. This could be a pretty big issue for someone who is using to keep pain or nausea at bay. - Rustymetal, on 07/02/2008, -2/+4a LB is alot to have on hand but to say 2 grams a day is enough for a medical patient is almost ridiculous. I smoke 2grams for recreation per day and still find at least half of the day I'm sober.
I hate MMJ because its stupid, it should be 100% legal grow, smoke, sell, personal or corporations. I mean alcohol is a ***** poison guys.. A POISON, would you drink paint thinner? I think not but it's A OK to drink alcohol in huge loads, not to mention it's the staple of spring break. - d1gp1g, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2dude
24 ounces is a pound and a half, not 2 and a half
28 grams to the ounce, 448 grams to the pound - FLarsen, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2"weed out the drugies from the people who really need it": Why? Why shouldn't a person be allowed to grow as much of it as he wants, and use it for whatever he wants?
- funkymoose, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2A guy in one of my classes was delivering a package next door and the police raided the place. They had a bunch of guns or something.
