- badwithcomputer, on 01/24/2008, -4/+143...pizzler submitted this?
- NikoKun, on 01/24/2008, -11/+140Oh, and another thing... This is another one of those harms, that could be eliminated, simply by using a vaporizer, or making foods with it, instead of smoking the pot.
Both of which, would be easier to do, if Marijuana was legalized. Cause it would likely become cheaper after legalization.
Wow, Something could be safer if it was legal and regulated? Who'd a thunk it? - NikoKun, on 01/24/2008, -34/+113Even if this was true, the chances would still not be high enough to cause any concern.
Besides that... There isn't sufficient evidence for them to be claiming a CAUSAL link! For all they know, It could be caused by something entirely different. But they likely dove into this study, for the single purpose of finding some link, so rather than eliminate other possibilities, they've stopped here, and now simply claim Marijuana is the cause. -_- Typical bad study practice.
Look at the bigger picture here though people, There is still NO reason for Marijuana to be outlawed... Because in comparison, Tobacco and Alcohol are still, more harmful drugs. If there was any real/logical standard, by which we could classify certain drugs as illegal, Then Marijuana would not be the illegal one.
And also, where else do we criminalize people, based on the individual's health choices??? I don't see us outlawing unhealthy fast-foods, for the basis of public health... So why outlaw Marijuana, a drug which individual's use of their own free choice, as a harm to our health? Are we not free to make those health choices for ourselves???
Are responsible adults not capable of making their own health choices? I don't think it makes much sense, that people can get drunk off their asses, and get addicted to alcohol and tobacco or any number of legal pharma-meds... But they can't choose to smoke pot, which causes less comparable harm?
Regardless of what this study says, I still think this kind of thing, isn't reason enough to have a prohibition. For consistency, logic, and whats right for us, free individuals, Marijuana should be legal! - NaziHatinChimp, on 01/24/2008, -2/+54Well I'm *****.
- usrlocalbin, on 01/24/2008, -1/+45THIS JUST IN!
Alcohol drinkers face rapid liver destruction!!!! - thenativeraver, on 01/24/2008, -4/+45Space Cakes FTW!!!
- JoeRandom, on 01/24/2008, -5/+45I Googled for a while. Periodical seems legit, article seems legit, I can't find any information to verify the cause and effect link the researchers seems to have locked on to. The last two paragraphs just give the impression that if you use a decent bong to cool the water and smoke slowly not trying to take a whole cone at once marijuana is completely safe. Anyway, good for you right wing crazies and old people with nothing better to do than complain. If anyone ever brings up legalization again ever about anything to do with marijuana or industrial hemp (for fuel, fabrics, plastics, etc) you will have this one study to fall back on. Irrefutable proof that you were right all along, that your whole life has been just.
I'm against marijuana but I'm for legalization. - ausfahrt, on 01/24/2008, -3/+39Vaporize :-)
- Coven, on 01/24/2008, -2/+27No side effects? You've obviously never gotten between a pot smoker and his cheetos.
X-D - Waiting2awake, on 01/24/2008, -8/+30Fool! Think of the starving pharmaceutical companies? What are they going to do when massive amounts of people realize that headache medications, women's monthly pain medications, dietary aids, etc, etc, etc can all be replaced by something without any side effects or long term damage.....
Lets not even discuss the Alcohol component and all the profits it would take from them. - CCB0x45, on 01/24/2008, -2/+24Hes trying to lower the street value of weed during the hard times of the upcoming recession!
- blackmage439, on 01/24/2008, -3/+23If people voted on logic, Bush would not have had a single term, let alone 8 agonizing years, and Kerry would never have had the nomination!
- prowlerjm, on 01/24/2008, -6/+26Quite the contrary
- MattFaber, on 01/24/2008, -3/+22So if I start smoking 20-30 joints a day I may get cancer?
- iamtheguyy, on 01/24/2008, -0/+14Number one side effect is munchies, Number 2 is REAL paranoia because you know for a fact society wants to lock you up and is looking for any excuse.
- zizzo, on 01/24/2008, -0/+14"You can't be addicted to weed. I've sucked d*ck for crack! Have you ever sucked d*ck for weed? Now that is an addiction."
- Bob Saget - DefaultGen, on 01/24/2008, -10/+22I can't wait to see all the potheads on digg bury this as inaccurate then digg me down.
- OHiggins, on 01/24/2008, -6/+18Keep this phrase in mind when you see articles like this:
"Correlation does not equal causation." - Sle3per, on 01/24/2008, -2/+14They don't put you in prison for attempted suicide.
- thechr0nic, on 01/24/2008, -3/+14guess ill have to trade my marijuana for hillbilly herion - oxycotin.
well.. maybe not quite yet - gndoss, on 01/24/2008, -0/+11According to the abstract, 10 people were studied.
http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j ... - HelloNavi, on 01/24/2008, -8/+19Well, at least with marijuana I'll be too high to care about lung cancer. Enjoy your pointless lung degeneration with tobacco y'all.
- directive0, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11Right because the only way you can enjoy smoking pot is if you blindly ignore any and all safety issues and refuse to hear any viewpoints counter to your own. Close your eyes, plug your ears, and sit in a dark cave on mars with a joint lit.
I still see tons of people smoking cigs, and drinking booze. Not like we haven't heard a mountain of evidence about that and somehow this one study makes Pot outrageously unsafe? Please. - NoPis10, on 01/24/2008, -0/+10ummm, it is if you're anorexic or going through chemotherapy.
- Linzee82, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11Thank you. What we need to be focusing on is the right of a person to do whatever they wish to themselves, so long as they don't harm others.
- puter, on 01/24/2008, -9/+18And you are jumping to the conclusion that it is not marijuana that is causing it.
Researchers have limited resources available to them. They took a group of people that smoked marijuana and found that there was a significantly increased rate for that medical condition and that it was occuring at an earlier age. Drawing the conclusion they did is very reasonable. What I would like to see is the sample size for their study. if they studied 50 people and found a link I would be doubtful and lend more weight to your claim. If they studied 200 I would say it was just wishful thinking on your part.
Also look at the disease. How they describe it, it is not dependant on what it is you are drawing into your lungs, just the fact that you are drawing hot smoke of any type into your lungs. In the case of marijuana smokers they are drawing deeper breaths and holding it longer, which is causing the damage. So why are you trying to defend the toxicity (or non-toxicity) of marijuana when that is not necessarily what is causing the problem?
Just because you want marijuana not to have negative effects does not necessarily make it true. Being addicted to anything has negative effects, and don't give me the crap about marijuana not being addictive...I know people who are addicted to it.
That all being said, I don't think any drug should be illegal. You will not stop those who want to do it from doing it by making it illegal, you just create violence and crime surrounding the drug. It should be legal and taxed and the money from the taxes used to treat those that are addicted to it. That would be a much better way of dealing with it than giving money to violent crime perpetrators and drug dealers by making it illegal. - funk49, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9+1....Edibles are the best way to go. The effects last much longer (8-12 hours vs. 3-4 hours with smoking) and there is no lung damage issues. I make my own with cakes from butter I buy from the dispensary and it works GREAT. California medicinal MJ FTW
- lucidguru, on 01/24/2008, -2/+11Vaporizer FTW
- NoPis10, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9if it's legal you could grow your own in the backyard or inside and it would cost you about as much as that philodendron that is dying in the living room.
- AlKo, on 01/24/2008, -1/+10Brought to you by the folks at "Captain Obvious Labs"
Inhaling and holding in lots of hot smoke in your lungs can damage them over time. - finalfantasyIII, on 01/24/2008, -4/+12"something without any side effects or long term damage...."
Sources? - inactive, on 01/24/2008, -4/+12Hooray for idiotic generalizations! Everyone who smokes weed once in a while is a worthless lazy pothead! Just like Carl Sagan and many many others.
- funk49, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9Don't forget the massive stink to your house/apartment. Here's a better way.
Boil water and throw the butter in there. Then throw in the shake. THC molecules can't bind with water, so it will all bind with the butter. After finished cooking, strain and let the mixture cool. The butter will rise to the top and separate. All that is needed is to skim the butter off the top of the water after it's solidified. I'm not sure on how long to cook it because I buy my butter.
This is reportedly the best method because you don't risk burning the weed, which can make the butter taste bad and it doesn't take as long as the slow roasting method of the crock pot. - orangefly, on 01/24/2008, -0/+8or the insane irony of a pothead forgetting where he hid his stash....it can literally drive a man insane....
- Navicerts, on 01/24/2008, -2/+9Of course putting smoke of any kind in your lungs is dangerous. To compare nicotine and marijuana is silly, you will get no truth from Phillip Morris or whoever is funding the research.
However, there are simple and easy ways to minimize the risk or eliminate it entirly. You could get a bubbler or use a bung for the extra filtration (bubbler would be better simply because the sheer amount of smoke a bong produces probably cancels out the extra filtration the water does. If you want to eliminate the risk all together you could bake with your THC (although time consuming). You could also buy a vaporizer, you can get one online for around 100 bucks. - prossi10, on 01/24/2008, -5/+12But marijuana is teh h4rml3ss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- jwolcott, on 01/24/2008, -5/+12I gotta go smoke a bong to deal with this news...
- NoPis10, on 01/24/2008, -1/+8pointless indeed. I never understood smoking something to bring you back to normal when you could just not smoke it and be normal all the time.
- alex7575, on 01/24/2008, -2/+9Trust me no matter if I'd smoked half an ounce in a day, I'd still remember where I put my weed, and how much of it is left, true that it does impair memory, but as far as i can tell, it's pretty random, and only memories of when I've been stoned, when I'm not stoned, my memory is A OK. Also, I'm a computer programmer, and I write code (slower) even when high, try that when drunk.
- matthewdestroys, on 01/24/2008, -2/+9maybe if you smoke blunts like snoop.
- bolognium, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7"They took a group of people that smoked marijuana and found that there was a significantly increased rate for that medical condition and that it was occuring at an earlier age."
they took a group of 10 people who had lung problems.. not a random sampling of marijuana users. - milktea, on 01/24/2008, -6/+13Invest in a Volcano, everyone :-)
- PtoS382, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7Pizzler is a woman...just letting you know
- d3k4y, on 01/24/2008, -1/+8That's exactly what I was thinking! OK, I just won't smoke it anymore. I'm trying to be a healthy drug user
- tman84, on 01/24/2008, -2/+9In other news, dropping bombs on innocent people is bad for their health.
- itux1985, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6correct
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -3/+9I blame Rupert Murdoch for that nazi propaganda. It's a well known irrefutable fact that smoking marijuana improve your health, raise your IQ, and feed the starving children.
- WNW3, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6That seems like a pretty small group for this type of study
