While it may increase the chances of cancer in the mouth and throat its important to note that studies have found it isn't as harmful as tobacco on the lungs.
"MYTH: MARIJUANA IS MORE DAMAGING TO THE LUNGS THAN TOBACCO. Marijuana smokers are at a high risk of developing lung cancer, bronchitis, and emphysema.
FACT: Moderate smoking of marijuana appears to pose minimal danger to the lungs. Like tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke contains a number of irritants and carcinogens. But marijuana users typically smoke much less often than tobacco smokers, and over time, inhale much less smoke. As a result, the risk of serious lung damage should be lower in marijuana smokers. There have been no reports of lung cancer related solely to marijuana, and in a large study presented to the American Thoracic Society in 2006, even heavy users of smoked marijuana were found not to have any increased risk of lung cancer. Unlike heavy tobacco smokers, heavy marijuana smokers exhibit no obstruction of the lung's small airway. That indicates that people will not develop emphysema from smoking marijuana."
http://www.drugpolicy.org/marijuana/factsmyths/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22That is because you accociate, hot smoke for lung problems and cancer..
actually most studies show marijuana smokers have less lung problems than tobacco.. and those that smoke both have less than just those that smoke tobacco.. that is because tobacco, causes your lungs to "seize up" and close, where as cannabis is an expectorant or causes them to open and cough the nasty stuff out. (and the latest stud was done by the drug czars leading anti marijuana scienctist.. who was dumb founded and said, with everything i know about marijuana, i just assumed it would be bad for you.) And he looked at people smoking for 60 years daily atleast one joint a day.
I do agree that doctors probably wont want to perscribe smoking..but not for health fears(well the not educated ones)... biggest problem is dosage. - awm4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I would love to go prevent some cancer right now.
- IceSabre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I can see the billboards now.... "Got Pot?"
Yeah right, lol - Etunus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Maybe cancer is caused by all of being too damned stressed all the time. War, terrorists, bills, economies, mortgages, etc.
Pot makes you calm down and settle your nerves. Probably just the act of not caring for a little while helps a LOT. - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Man, when the government lies about something, they really stick with the lie until the end. They already said there is no medical benefit to marijuana, so god forbid they backtrack and admit they were wrong. Instead they lie and cover-up even more.
It's too bad for the thousands of people that could benefit from the treatments. - snsr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm preventing cancerous cell growth for the both of us.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Good news to hear, because I smoke two joints in the morning and i smoke two joints at night. i smoke two joints before i smoke two joints and then i smoke two more.
i smoke two joints during times of peace and during times of war, it makes me feel alright. - ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I just read this article the olther day
http://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/cannabis_health2.shtml
its a good article.
here is a clip from the first paragraph
"So, you thought it was the tar that caused cancer...
Think again. Cigarette companies will have you believing
anything just as long as you continue to buy their products. The
fact is, although insoluble tars are a contributing factor to the
lung cancer danger present in today's cigarettes, the real danger
is radioactivity. According to U.S. Surgeon General C. Everette
Koop (on national television, 1990) radioactivity, not tar,
accounts for at least 90% of all smoking related lung cancer.
Tobacco crops grown in the United States are fertilized by law
with phosphates rich in radium 226. In addition, many soils have
a natural radium 226 content. Radium 226 breaks down into two long
lived 'daughter' elements -- lead 210 and polonium 210. These
radioactive particles become airborne, and attach themselves to the
fine hairs on tobacco leaves." - TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@kaeryn
I can brew beer in my garage that's not taxed and not packaged or sold by mega corps for mega profits and it's perfectly legal. I don't think that's the problem. I think it's because there's this big assumption that "drugs are bad" and that includes marijuana. So until all the old farts and religous zealots who think marijuana will make you want to jump off a building die, or at least open their minds, it'll never be legal. - jamessavik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11cokeheads never shut up as it is. Clever ones like Dennis Miller get their own tv shows to get their rant on.
- joshwalderbach, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I think this is a horrible idea. I'm pro-life and need I remind you a cancer cell is a living being too! You damn pro-choice people. Selectively killing what you will.
- kaeryn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Actually I believe the problem is that anyone can grow it anywhere so it can not be fully taxed, it can not be packaged and sold by mega corps for mega profits. Tobacco can only grow under certain conditions and therefore it's growth and sale can be controlled for taxation and profit purposes.
As for rummys "fact" it's simply NOT a fact. There is no proof of that. - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Yup, and that's been printed in every magazine, used in dozens of commercials, and god knows what else. Funny though, there's been no mention of marijuana's possible benefits.
- crzdmnsldy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10yeah.. They actually have pills.. One is called Cesamet.
There's this other stuff called Cannabrex, but I believe you have to order a kit and make it yourself.
@dm; Don't you love them?! Especially when you get sick, it's really nice on the lungs/throat. - Llan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14So how does "Who could imagine that cannabis might one day offer hope as a cure for cancer?" become "Marijuana Prevents Cancer" in this headline?
- buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10On one episode of "Pen and Teller's: *****" they interviewed one of the few people who can legally possess and smoke marijuana in the U.S. (federally legal). He was part of a study to determine what, if any, the medicinal effects of Marijuana were. He's been apart of the program for a long time (I think 10+ years). At the end of the show he said 'all this time I've been a part of this study, the government hasn't asked me ONCE how well it works.'
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Who can imagine that marijuana derivatives might prevent cancer?
I don't know, who would have thought that gila monster saliva would lead to a diabetes treatment or that herring semen would lead to a medicine? - TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18I swear, it doesn't matter WHAT the subject matter of an article is these days, some jackass will find a way to twist it around so he can start some good ole Bush bashing.
- Soniti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I dont know why this is reported as innaccurate- It has been common knowledge to the Medical Community that THC retards tumor growth, and smoking Marijuana in any way (Vaporization, joints, or pipes) has NEVER caused cancer.
Yes, I do think Marijuana is a possible cure, but if not- It's an extremely good treatment. It would stop the cancer from getting any bigger, and spreading.
~Soniti - Skullpop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9My daddy once told me 'Son, you be hard working man', my mummy once told me 'Son, you do the best you can'.. And then one day, I met a man, who come to me and say: 'Hard work good, and hard work fine, but first take care of head!'
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12*whipes tear from eye* One day we'll see a sign that says that.... one day...
- TBagwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@Llan
actually "compounds found in cannabis have been shown to kill numerous cancer types including: lung cancer [9], breast and prostate [10], leukemia and lymphoma [11], glioma [12], skin cancer [13], and pheochromocytoma [14]."
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1277837 - Muncher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Could you imagine that cannabis might one day offer hope as a cure for cancer? The United States government, that’s who..."
I love how that statement makes no coherent sense. You might want to just copy and paste next time. - FzArEkTaH, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13disagreed - dumb people are dumb on weed or not, i think weed can really open up new ways of thinking, or at least lets people look at things in a viewpoint that they may have not otherwise, look at movies, music etc... do you think it would be the same without marijuana?
- awm4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The next time I decide to "prevent cancer" I will do it while drinking nice glass of Florida Orange Juice.
- ZMoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8NUGGETS!!!
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17I dugg this, however, I don't think smoking it would help fight cancer though. It would have to be administered via pill, IV, or patch.
- x2dx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I hate people that are against Marijuana, it ain't hurting you so worry about your own dam body and ill worry about mine.
- CarbonEclectic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It also gives the government an excuse to spend money on the war on drugs.
- asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's reported as inaccurate because some people are just against Marijuana because they are against not having to "earn" happiness. They are morally against the plant, no matter how beneficial/safe it is.
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -0/+6I can't wait. 20 years from now when people realize that weed is actually better for you then cigarettes, alcholol and soda pop...I really want to buy some Romulan or some White Widow at my gas station. That would be bomb.
Smoke Weed. Do it NOW. =] - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6OJ and a bonghit. The breakfast of champions.
- mhearne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It was new news to me. Don't forget that the media is punished by the government for publishing any pro-drug news.
The worst anti-drug trash I hear is from drug-war idiots who have never smoked pot. They seem to be convinced that getting high is worse than getting shot. They couldn't have any idea how foolish they look to us.
Marijuana shouldn't even be associated with the other illegal drugs. - buggzero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I wish they would legalize marijuana so pot heads have nothing to talk about anymore.
- crzdmnsldy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@Rummy; surprsingly no, it's not. It hasn't been linked to any cancer. I believe it's b/c cig's are loaded with chemicals.
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sigh....
http://digg.com/general_sciences/Study_Finds_No_Link_between_Marijuana_and_Lung_Cancer - asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The funny thing is that the new anti-drug commercial "Pete's Couch" even states that it's not a gateway drug, yet they still use these arguments against it. How are people supposed to make sense of that?
Who's lying? the pro-legalization folks, the government or the groups that make the anti-drug commercials? This is why prohibition will HAVE to end. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe the local Cannabis dealers should put there funds together and put an ad out.
- CarbonEclectic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Smoking marijuana has been found to be very non-toxic. A lot of people come to the same conclusion you just did because they immediately compare it to smoking tobacco. Tobacco has a completely different chemical content compared to Cannabis, and don't forget the even more toxic chemicals that the companies put into their products. Nobody has ever died from smoking Cannabis and smoking was the #1 cause of preventable death in the US (now #2 because of the increase in obesity).
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5"Nothing Does"
Green Tea? Blueberries? Antioxidents that take away free radicals? MARIJUANA?!?!?!??!?1111
Man I love green tea blueberries and herbage DOWN WITH FREE RADICALS...up with TUBES - ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah, I've pretty much phased out smoking as a means of consuming marijuana myself. I cook it in butter or oil and consume that (cook it in any kind of fat). It's much healthier than smoking, gives me a longer lasting high, and I get more out of it than smoking (less money spent).
It's also harder to get caught with it in public, when you consume it, you're just eating a brownie or cookie or other baked good :) It also has a delayed effect which is good for when you are going out. - pcrepairshop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'll spark one up to that...
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And your apart of the group of people who do not know what your talking about. Most of the time pot heads don't apply themselves, because they see no point in life except smoke pot. Again this is a human issues not entirely weed. If humans get used to doing something over and over again, chances are they wont stop or will keep doing it for a long time. Anybody can recover, it doesn't make you retarded. Its people like you who give it a bad name, you like working in your cubical all day? ***** that life, seriously. Work hard, hang out, get ***** up, and live life.
I really hate the types who say, I don't like anything that alters my mind or takes away control of my body. Before anybody says anything about weed, they should at least try it. I believe you have no right to speak if you don't have first hand experience. - InferiorWang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I wish they would legalize marijuana so pot heads have nothing to talk about anymore"."
Really, that's all we ask. Then you can sit back and watch the other benefits from cannabis and hemp-related industry. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I heard drinking a glass of orange juice a day prevents cancer too.
