- Lowenfels, on 11/10/2009, -1/+57what *doesn't* MJ help?
- ftc08, on 11/10/2009, -0/+51I've got Bipolar Disorder, and when I'm in an episode the last thing I should do is smoke.
But!
When I'm not in an episode, and smoke one or two times a week it actually does wonders at keeping me in an objective state of mind. Keeps me centered, in a literal sense.
I've found out that alcohol is actually the poison I need to stay away from. First time I ever got drunk triggered a textbook psychotic-level mixed state. Second time, 3 month long depressive state. And you'll get fired as a state drug adviser for even implying something illegal is safer than alcohol. - mmittimm, on 11/10/2009, -2/+41I'm going to save everyone a lot of time and research:
MARIJUANA DOES EVERYTHING. - uptwolait, on 11/10/2009, -2/+41I feel a bipolar disorder coming on.
- DiggerLater, on 11/10/2009, -1/+37I was diagnosed with bi-polar in my teens. When I was in my early twenties I was still having problems with it, and went through about 6 different "psychotherapeutic" drugs, prescribed by a psychiatrist, all of which had terrible effects on me, from panic attacks to even wilder mood swings, and mostly a general sense that I was "covered in plastic" (hard to describe). Canabis is the ONLY thing I have found that actually allows me to maintain my positive state of mind, reduces mood swings, and allows me to concentrate on productive tasks consistently. I never would have gotten my engineering degree without it.
- joshmoney, on 11/10/2009, -1/+30Your ability to say no to Taco Bell.
- mannymix03, on 11/10/2009, -0/+23All I ever see is "Marijuana may help people with X" and then other stories about "X died of alcohol poisoning or driving drunk or lung cancer etc"
Why is marijuana illegal while tobacco and cigarettes are legal?
Legalize it - Atario, on 11/10/2009, -1/+24Surgical skill?
- SeanRoss, on 11/10/2009, -0/+22Where can I find this wonderful medicine?
- pantslesswally, on 11/10/2009, -0/+22Neurocognition in people with schizophrenia.
- inactive, on 11/10/2009, -1/+21I have BP and until 3 years ago I smoked pot (for 11 years). It sure as ***** didn't help me. It made the bad times even worse and the manic times even more manic. My advice, if you have a mental illness, be very, very careful. I think it's quite likely that pot will have a role treating many things in the future, but I'd hold off on treating myself with it today. I'm pro-legalization (prohibition is stupid) but this seems like another "promote anything pot related" Digg thing. Don't get carried away.
- cli006, on 11/10/2009, -0/+19Marijuana addiction is purely a mental addiction.
My GF is addicted to shoes and shopping. My friend is addicted to WoW, my other friend is addicted to hookers, and another is addicted to Moe's burritos (he eats them almost everyday).
People can be addicted to anything. In the end, it's all about self control. - deathstryk, on 11/10/2009, -6/+23getting a job.
- BigJMcCarthy, on 11/10/2009, -0/+15Apparently it doesn't help those with schizophrenia. FTA "RESULTS: In bipolar disorder subjects, cannabis use was associated with better neurocognitive function, but the opposite was the case for the schizophrenia subjects."
- oda1, on 11/10/2009, -0/+15Yeaaah, I'm gonna have to go ahead and ask you to legalize it, m'kay, that would be greaaat.
- MrRtd, on 11/10/2009, -0/+12Nobody is saying it's going to help in every case. I suspect that the marijuana used in this study would have been tested, so they know the levels of THC, and would restrict the amount used by each participant.
Self medicating, for any mental disorder is rarely effective. - oda1, on 11/10/2009, -0/+11your dads old sock cabinet, look in it.
- daEvan, on 11/10/2009, -0/+11You don't understand the concept that weed isn't a drug. It's a ***** plant. It's not comparable to heroin, LSD, or ecstasy. Weed is not dangerous and you present nothing that justifies marijuana's prohibition. You are delusional.
- fr0ng, on 11/10/2009, -1/+11Holy *****, it's coming from a .gov
- Rockyn, on 11/10/2009, -0/+10To numb the pain resulting from being around scumbags like you.
- MWeather, on 11/10/2009, -0/+10So don't smoke pot if you're a schizo.
- dstz, on 11/10/2009, -0/+10The pharmaceutical industry and our nations coffers.
- goomba323, on 11/10/2009, -2/+12Coffee is more addicting. Let's not deny the facts.
- theBean42, on 11/10/2009, -2/+11does it work if you're bi-curious?
- tmyprod, on 11/10/2009, -0/+9Knife fighting?
- MWeather, on 11/10/2009, -0/+9"I read once that XTC can temporarily alleviate symptoms of parkinsons disease. Should we now legalize ex for everyone? "
Yes. If a drug treats a given disorder, it should be legal to use for treatment of that disorder.
"Hey, did you know that heroine can calm people who might otherwise go on wild rampages? Lets legalize it!"
It's already used medically in many countries, for example the UK.
"And of course LSD can stimulate the optic nerve in blind people. So lets legalize that too."
We should, but only because no harm has conclusively been shown. At least not harm from the drug itself. Trying to fly off a balcony? Well, stupid is as stupid does. Always use a sitter.
"If people are going to insist that all three are treated the same way by the law, then alchohol and tobacco should be outlawed instead of legalizing MJ."
Then write your congressman. I'd love to see that happen. The best way to get a bad law repealed is to enforce it vigorously. - overtoke, on 11/10/2009, -0/+9take them with a bonghit instead
- Foozy, on 11/10/2009, -0/+8University of Oslo isn't just any University, it's one of the most prestigious in the world. Sadly this won't make a large impact in the political debate and marijuana will still be laughed off by way too many people.
- dandaman0345, on 11/10/2009, -0/+8...and apparently the ability to accept the fact that it negatively affects your lungs.
- Rockyn, on 11/10/2009, -0/+8Hey I'm sitting in my mom's basement writing a research proposal as one of the final steps of acquiring a master's degree in biology. *****.
- semiotic, on 11/10/2009, -0/+8So it's okay to compare marijuana to heroine, LSD, and ecstasy, but it's not okay to compare it to alcohol and tobacco?
The point of the marijuana debate isn't just its possible curative effects; it's also that it doesn't harm/effect people like other illegal drugs do and it actually causes less harm and impairment than a night of drinking.
Also, it's worth noting that regardless of whether or not it's legalized, it should be decriminalized. We don't need to keep filling up our prisons with nonviolent marijuana users. - overtoke, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6the ENTIRE EARTH is bipolar
- rocknog, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6Only if it's smoked. That's what I don't understand about the argument. Why ignore the fact that smoking is only one way of consuming marijuana?
- MrRtd, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6It's everywhere. Start asking around, you will find it, sooner than you think.
- syrum, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6I have bipolar disorder and i have a medical marijuana license because of it, it has seriously helped me more than all of those prescriptions drugs my doctor subscribed me.
Legalize it. - doublsh0t, on 11/10/2009, -1/+7One year the "miracle supplements" were fiber or antioxidants, next year it was omega 3s, next year it was the accai fruit, now it's vitamin D. Sounds like they're prepping pot to be next.
- RiperSnifle, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6The 2012 apocalypse.
OK, maybe a little. - Rockyn, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6just most of them.
- Sabin8, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5I'm pretty sure being bi-polar has to do with a chemical imbalance and not with excess amounts of dopamine.
- tootim, on 11/10/2009, -3/+8Well lets look at some facts. Nobody has ever died from it. It doesn't kill brain cells. Its not physically addictive and it doesn't cause cancer (well, inhaling smoke is never good but there is always cookies, ice cream, vaporizers, candy, boiled milk etc etc).
So what does that leave us? Psychological addiction. Ok, yes, that can be bad. People committing suicide from being depressed by trying to get off of it doesn't help get ANY drug approved.
We shall see. - Princeamor, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5I'm High lol.
- noangelcame, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4I can't wait til this tired stereotype is dead. Marijuana does not make you lazy. You just know lazy people who happen to smoke Marijuana.
Doesn't all the successful people who've admitted to smoking weed all their life not prove that already? Look at Carl Sagan, he wrote about smoking weed most of his adult life,. and he pioneered the Space Program as an adviser to NASA.
There are countless successful musicians and artists,. and Corporate CEOs who all smoke weed. So,. stop repeating that tired lie. - MrRtd, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5Yeah and your friend was also screwing with regularly prescribed meds at the same time. The doctor probably didn't know of your friends pot use.
Any time someone with a mental illness starts to self-medicate with any drug usually ends in some sort of bad situation.
Just because it was bad for your friend doesn't make it bad for others. - QQQQUUUU, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5Q: Who should decide what medications you take?
A. Doctor
B. Politician - noumuon, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5aside from the fact that things do get far overhyped, everything you listed is nutritionally beneficial. while the seeds certainly have nutritional value, nothing of the sort is derived from smoking pot.
- BlindingDawn, on 11/10/2009, -3/+8Wait.. it took a study to find this out?
- kefkastudio, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5I bet you a bunch of bipolar people just went from 6 to midnight
- Phatlip012, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4This is the best idea ever! I love it!
