- Asten77, on 01/23/2009, -0/+36That's not exactly a useful map to look at what bridges nearby are in bad shape.
- Magoo2, on 01/23/2009, -0/+31Apparently that website is structurally deficient...
- jordantneff, on 01/23/2009, -2/+31Under 10,000...but
OVER 9000! - Yankees368, on 01/23/2009, -0/+18GIS fail. Those giant green dots the size of a county do not help me at all.
- mynameisjudge, on 01/23/2009, -0/+17Uhh.. "structurally deficient" is rather vague. What does that mean. If the bridges were built using the old structural codes then that's not a big deal. Some retrofitting maybe required, especially in seismic area if the bridge was built before the seismic code went into effect. Or, are we talking about bridges that are not being maintained?
Anyway, maybe all of this is already explained. I wouldn't know, because the site is down.
From a humble civil engineer. - Paktu, on 01/23/2009, -1/+18As a graduate of the University of Minnesota, I strongly recommend binge drinking.
- JamesBondJr, on 01/23/2009, -0/+14so in 5 years maybe only 10 a day will fail
- Tomboys, on 01/23/2009, -2/+15Oh.. that's not that bad. At least it's under 10,000.
- ZXDrew, on 01/23/2009, -2/+14The map came out while Obama is president .. .. .. so blame him
it makes sense - inactive, on 01/23/2009, -0/+11mirror w/the complete, organized table of bridges in each city:

They also took a lot of information from this website:

We're all gonna die! - inactive, on 01/23/2009, -0/+8Now tell us which ones they are so we can avoid them...
- TMeck, on 01/23/2009, -0/+7dead already.... mirror?
- karlos876, on 01/23/2009, -1/+8As a soon-to-be graduate of the University of Minnesota, I strongly support bridge drinking.
- crispa1970, on 01/23/2009, -0/+7my thoughts exactly. why isn't the map interactive? there's several little green dots near my part of my state.
- marleymar, on 01/23/2009, -0/+7You can actually zoom in with this map. And it tells you exactly where the deficient bridge is located. I found this map to be a little frustrating.
http://www.bts.gov/programs/geographic_information ... - Konrad9, on 01/23/2009, -0/+7Yeah, water certainly isn't corrosive. And I mean it's only been up there for two thousand years, I mean come on, it's not like there's ever been any huge storms in that region.
- WafflePirate, on 01/23/2009, -1/+7I like those odds. Let drink to it!
- nigelmansell, on 01/23/2009, -1/+6in other words, everybody in the construction business, from Architecture firms to cement pavers are asking the government for money
- dsmx, on 01/23/2009, -1/+6didn't you listen to bush? everyone who didn't go to war with iraq isn't a friend of america.

Seriously. What the *****. Why can't we build anything to last. - Headake, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4well who we gonna blame this one on?
- casey148, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4There's a bridge in Portland Oregon that's rated 3/100.
- kuzotz, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4well they have no work. There isn't a lot of demand, and most states cannot even afford to keep up with its infrastructure.
- kuzotz, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4in oklahoma's case this will never happen. Our state has had a scandel with profits made from tolls going into the pockets of politicians and not into the infrastructure itself. Its why our roads and bridges are the ***** in the nation.
- burketo, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4And i'm sure it was adequate to take whatever loads were expected when it was built... many bridges last well over a hundred years before HGVs and busses ever existed and any large loads were transported by canal or train.... aside from that there is of course the 1 in 1000 odds of the engineers making a big mistake, seems about right!
actually i think it is a bit irisponsible of the author not to give at least a broad outline of what the transport authority deems structurally deficient, i imagine they have fairly high standards on bridges nowadays... i seem to remember a highway bridge coming down in an earthquake somewhere in the US a couple of years ago and crushing people under it. nothing will make requirements skyrocket like casualties.
If only journalism was held to such stringent standards as engineering we might know what the term structurally deficient means in this context. - mrtdot, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4Pennsylvania is screwed ...
- rynsa, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4Ah, the United States of America... purple mountains, fruited plains... the most bountiful member of the third world.
- Smuikas, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3Rather than give them money, we should give them work.
Repairing bridges.
Upgrading our rail infrastructure.
Etc.. - Jektal, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3France?
- rustyrobot, on 01/23/2009, -3/+6As a student of the Universtiy of Minnesota, I strongly recommend bridge fixing.
- Azathothh, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3MMUUUAHHAHHHAHHAHA!
- Murdats, on 01/23/2009, -1/+4then we should make all roads toll roads, all footpaths toll footpaths, have entry fees for parks and water fountains coin activated
you can't use any public infrastructure unless you pay for it. - digidelia, on 01/23/2009, -0/+390% of nevada is shrubs and burros, not bridges
- chesterogilvie, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3The Rourke Bridge in Lowell, MA is a "temporary" bridge that was put up around 1980. It was supposed to be there for 10 years tops. It's still there. ALL of the bridges in Lowell are failing to the point where something like half of them have been closed or restricted in use. It's a problem.

- Nauthez, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3Yay, now people like me (upcoming structural engineers) will have something to keep us busy!
- docbob84, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Don't think of it as a terrifying warning; think of it as a game! Call it "guess the safe bridge". Hey, it's what the local governments are apparently doing.
- pinbackATTK, on 01/23/2009, -1/+3Over the river and threw the bridge
The water is ***** cold
The horse swept away
Oh what a sad day
Please fix the god damn roadddd - Jennadickes, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2We have a toll system like this in Florida called Sunpass for all the bridges and highways. You just put the thing on your windshield and when you go through the specified Sunpass lanes it takes the toll from your bank account.
The problem with it is that probably only half of drivers use it so the lanes still get backed up. - SHannonOBrien, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2In my state of Washington, our state government has been saying they're going to fix the bridges since I was born! They spend a fortune on "increasing diversity in the state" and "increasing awareness about the arts" and yet they don't spend nearly any money on fixing the roads. In the last earthquake we had, one of our bridges broke and crushed a bunch of cars below it.
- inajeep, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2I guess your looking at your state and not the totals at the bottom. 72k is a bunch. I'm waiting for someone to tie the data into Google maps and have a warning every time you cross one of the unsound bridges.
- inajeep, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Philly is finally repairing South St bridge. It had holes in it where you could see the traffic below through the road and parts of the walkway. It's going to take 2 years to fix.
- lisaawesome, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2***** our state is just flat out broke while we are shelling out tax on absolutely everything. Our complete lack of money management and horribly inept politicians has allowed Oklahoma to blossom into the ***** it is today. I wish the roads were the worst problem we have. The Gazette put out some fun Oklahoma facts in the past week's edition and we are in the top 10 for all sorts of mental and physical health problems. We are number 6 in teen births and almost 30% of our new mothers have no high school diploma. Seriously Oklahoma why can't we get our heads out of our asses and fix our major social problems?
Oh yeah and the toll roads were supposed to stop being tolled when they got paid off. The roads have been paid off. Tolls still being collected. What happened to that promise? - HtomSirveaux, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Well, the world's largest highway system takes a lot of maintenance.
- Jektal, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2FunnyDataQ: Good idea, but it's a very slippery slope.
Do you also put some of that gasoline money to the hospitals for health hazards caused by smog, or to help pay for the costs of accidents? What about the court systems which have to deal with the legal cases arising from automobile accidents? And the public defendants? The insurance companies? - ninjasandshiz, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2amen.
