Good grief man! The guy just asked a question! Maybe it sounded harsher than you intended, but starting your post with "you're an idiot" sounds really mean. Maybe you should read your replies out loud before you click "Submit Comment", you might catch stuff like that... - ThinkBox, on 10/18/2007, -0/+50If I were him I wouldn't fall asleep in public with any physicians around...
- canadianguy33, on 10/12/2007, -9/+49Very cool. I'm kind of jealous that I don't have a bionic heart. :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26@foobar: Yeah, you're a heartless bastard (we assume, because you have no pulse)
- Gerz1219, on 10/18/2007, -0/+18Mechanical heart, huh? Damn, that Canadian guy's going to have to declare bankruptcy when he can't pay the exorbinant medical bills. Oh, right...
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Eh, I have no pulse in my left arm due to an accident that ripped up my arteries and veins (as well as bone, muscle, etc). The main artery is pretty much useless and I now use capillary action for blood flow. Even a baby heart monitor fails to detect a pulse.
- arpad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16That depends.
If we're running Microsoft software the phrase "blue screen of death" takes on a whole, new meaning and a line isn't necessary since you'll be dead.
If we're running OS X it won't matter where the line is, we'll all look alike and be identically arrogant.
If we're running Linux we'll live forever but never get laid. - Flawless, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21@N00F :
As a man from Quebec, I find your comment totally uncalled for, insulting and hateful. It's because of ***** like you with your moronic and uninformed statements, that people in Quebec want to separate from the rest of Canada.
And for the record, I'm not a separatist. I am a proud Quebecer though, and I've had it up to here with stupid comments like the one you just posted.
And by the way genius, it's Jean Charest and the Federalist LIBERALS who are in charge of government in Quebec right now, not the "EVIL Separatists". And even if it were the Parti Quebecois who were in power... calling the Quebec government "fascist" is plain stupid. Do you at least KNOW what fascism IS? - P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Because his artificial hart doesn't pulsate. It's a continuous flow.
- DoodlesMcPooh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12That is true Mr Burns does not have a pulse either.
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Free of charge. Thanks fellow tax payers!
- grazwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I could stay young and chipper
And I'd lock it with a zipper
If I only had a heart. - khellendros1984, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This article references several people having this type of heart pump. It's from about 2 and a half years ago.
http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6209 - StevoCJ, on 10/18/2007, -1/+10You look after the government, and the government will look after you.
- rocktopotomus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10yes. not having any science behind me I still think this is potentially disastrous. Our bodies have evolved over millions of years using a pulsating flow of blood, to suddenly change to a constant pressure seems ill advised.
- arduenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I wonder what the long term effects on the arteries will be. Hopefully the tensile strength will not deteriorate, analogous to what is seen in muscle and skeleton tissue in astronauts and cosmonauts after a long stay in microgravity.
- Scynet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Why do we need lines anyway? Stupid things, they make us label things into categories...
- CALDER1C, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So does this mean he is incapable of feeling love?
- prot0col, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5One positive effect is a reduced or eliminated chance of stroke. By having a constant pressure you no longer have the closing on opening of the vessels in the brain that cause breakage. As far as the rest of the body, I cant tell you.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ok, but what does he eat?
Braaaaaaaaaaains? - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wonder how it feels to have a continuous flow of blood, if it feels any different at all. I would imagine it's noticeably different.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Howabout this.. rather than ASSUMING I'm wrong..
Open up google, type "heartmate" and read a bit, this fellow in canada is not the only person with a heartmate device, nor the first human with one.
I shouldn't be surprised to see people on digg (a place where the majority of people dont participate, but do gain the benefits of other's work) be lazy and reactionary. - mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Procedure experimental, so he pays back with his life experience with this heart transformed into quite valuable knowledge. I would say that the deal is good for both parties: this old fella and the Canadian public (and humanity, but the rest of us did not pay for the surgery, so yay! to Canadians).
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7This guy isn't the only person without a pulse... The LVAT is a widely used medical device that is placed in a patient whose heart is extremely weak. It bypasses the heart and pumps the blood for them which allows either time for a transplant to arrive, or gives the heart time to rest/heal...
The LVAT is only one of a few different devices that does this.
People without a pulse are nothing new. Maybe they are in canada though...? - funkydude101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah that's the first thing I noticed too....I can't believe no one else commented on how it must feel to have no pulse.
I'm guessing it's like a continuous variable transmission, never feel the gears change in your car ;)
You would go for a jog and your heart wouldn't race? Be scared and no racing heart? I really don't get it...maybe he can't do those things anymore as it's designed to pump blood at a constant level. - SecretChief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The clinical trials for this artificial are about halfway done, meaning that this man is about the 100th person to get this type of turbine with no pulse. 100 more to go, then a couple of years to analyse the results.
- Pushkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I believe the HUMAN referred to whether or not he is still human
And are the others still alive? - Pushkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Perhaps they unscrew something?
- flak9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3my dad had the heartmate LVAD (which was the version before this) and the device itself provided a pulse and the heart had a pulse. he had two measurable pulses. unfortunately he passwd away while waiting for a heart transplant at the age of 48. i have seen these devices do some CRAZY things and help several people.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7At least the article named the man with no pulse.
You are just bitching without backing your claim. - P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Using your logic, we should all live in caves, naturally, the way the world was meant to be....
No pcs, no macs, no cars, no planes, no nothing.
I think if we weren't supposed to do these kind of things, we couldn't do them at all. But since we were given a sophisticated brain by evolution, we can. - b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cheesy but nice.
- foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know of lots of people with no pulse but they're all underground.
- ch33sehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But you still have a pulse in your neck.
- dredwolff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Hickeroar
Those artificial hearts all emulate a pulse by pumping blood in a way similar to how the heart does... IIRC, that was done because of superstitions about disturbing the body's internal rhythm. This is the first artificial heart to not "beat" like other hearts but provide a continuous output like an aquarium pump. - loneBoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Or Human 2.0? I know some people with rounded edges and a glossy complexion...
- madhaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$10k a year for MAYBE ten years (paid by charity). How would you know when it stops working if you don't have a pulse? Still its probably safer than that nuclear powered heart right? Which do you think would get you first? Cancer or a failed battery?
- DoMaGe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1um ... the procedure was paid for by a hospital foundation. This money comes from fundraising efforts and from personal donations... not from taxes.
- everywhereasign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd love to try to take that guys blood pressure or put him on a cardiac monitor. When that guy croaks, all resuscitative efforts would do nothing for him.
CPR - nope
Defib - nope
Drugs - nope
Pacing - nope - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heartless Kanucks
fook em ;) - Antz0rz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whats going to happen when he gets a rush of adrenaline or something and his heart rate has to increase to provide enough blood for the body? Is it controlled?
- dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1comment deleted
- N00F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, the frenchies are a touchy lot! But we already knew that right? That's why the rest of Canada don't give them any respect, only our federal money (to shut them up). Hmmm, doesn't seem to be working... I guess we should give them more money?
- Jack9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>How about HUMAN?
This isn't the first man to have this type of pulse-less artificial heart. Idiot poster.
/has an artificial heart valve
//has had 2 open heart surgeries - dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Go Canada! YEAH! Woooooooooooooo! We gonna OWN you stupid countries with a pulse.....
I like Canada but that is a stupid comment. - Holosoth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The whole Americans hating Canadians is just a really huge joke. So don't take them seriously.
- arnoldsoccer4, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I have a gnarly scar, but it is more of a line than a bit, apparently now when they do it they don't even have to close the vein and there is no scar left.
- nikkesen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can believe that he has no pulse, as it is medically possible to have different pulses in each arm.
- vlurk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@NOOF.
You're so ignorant I don't know if I should answer you.... First, you won't do jail if you have an english only sign. The worst you'll get is a fee. Plus, someone has to report that to the "Office de la langue française". As a matter of fact, you can find a lot of signs in Montreal that aren't written in french. Go on St-Laurent, between René Lévesque and Viger... Many signs are written in mandarin there. And you have some other neighborhoods were you'll find a lot of signs in foreign languages.
Alors, tu te souviens aussi? You remember nothing you fool! We had to acquire legislation like the Bill 101 to reclaim our culture. Do you know what Quebec was like at the beginning of the 20th century? In despite of the vast french canadian majority, everything at the government was english only. It was english that was predominent everywhere, while it was only a minor part of the population that could speak it. The best positions available at our governement and our businesses weren't for french canadians. It wasn't until the Bill 33 in 1974 that french was recognized as an official language... in the province of Quebec! That's a bit late don't you think?.
So, you think Bouchard is a traitor? If I'm not mistaken, the letter you wrote about was sent in 95, and it was telling the Canadian Prime Minester that in case of a major yes at the referendum, the Canadian Army might have to leave the province of Quebec. And that's it. He never asked to do it. Speaking of traitors... Pierre Eliot Trudeau (former canadian prime minester) betrayed us during the passing of the Canadian Constitution in 1982. Because of that, Quebec still hasn't signed the constitution yet. And that is one of the biggest motivation for separatists, even these days. Who is the biggest traitor to his country?
NOOF, I blocked you because I don't want to ever read one of your comment again. There is just nothing worst than ignorant people trying to push their opinions by distorting/omitting/ignoring the facts. I pitty you, but you'll get no more sympathy from me. - mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder what kind of maintainance does this mechanical device require during these 10 years? Also I am not sure the mechanical/living tissue interfaces would last that long.
In any way. 10 years does not exclude forever, because the old heart would be probably easy to replace with the new one. -
